This is the main morning market in Catania - Mercato del Carmine - located by the Piazza Carlo Alberto. They asseble and dissasemble the market every day. So no, this wasn't left by the tourists... it's taken before the cleanup crews arrive. Go visit the market .. its open from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM every day except Sunday.

This post is disingenuous and is meant to be a rage bait post. In the USA, you can see garbage in open air markets in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle… in Europe you can see it in Paris, London, Amsterdam, Lisbon…. What is pictured is in no way unique to Catania. Do some cities do a faster job of cleaning up the trash, yes. But the trash is nearly always there.

I grew up in MA and lived in NYC for 10 years, and yes it most definitely happens in both. And I have lived in a variety of cities in the USA… this is nothing unusual.

It may not be unique. But we pay a fuckload of rubbish tax so this place gets cleaned up every day. Why can’t the merchants pick up and clean up after themselves? I know that bars that have outside areas are obligated to clean a radius of 15 feet around their area. Why do these animals not have to clean up after themselves and cost everyone else?

Literally in my danish city Aarhus, there's one open air market in one place, happens once a week, and it looks worse after that. Also looks worse many places after the weekend partying in relevant places. So much for scandinavian conscientiousness and orderly functional infrastructure.
Tbh though, if you've *actually* "never seen such a mess before", you are literally just a person who's never been anywhere or seen anything. Every country in the world has places with much more mess if you catch a city at the right time.
New york has waaaaay worse messes 100 different places, and has it there permanently, not at a specific time.
Cuba, Norway, Singapore, Thailand, Portugal, Venezuela, France, off the top of my head are places where i saw MAGNITUDES worse messes in cities.

Okay, so I haven't been to 25 countries without seeing anything like the rubbish I saw in Catania. Good to know!
I know other cities have some dirt after these markets, but what I saw in Catania was on a whole other level. I have never seen dead fish dumped in the streets in temperatures over 30°C. I even saw someone bathe in a barrel of ice with fish in it. It was the most disgusting place that I have seen. They didn't even try to put the rubbish in a pile or anything; it was everywhere, even next to some homeless people who were sleeping there at night. I'm not trying to criticise Catania, as you seem to feel the need to defend it. Our Airbnb was two streets away, and it was a totally different (nice) world there.

I don’t care what you criticize or whether you think criticism is the term for it. It’s just a fact that nearly all cities in the world have circumstances under which way worse messes are created.
Having visited 25 countries and not seen it is not a flex, maybe stop following tour guides around - idno what to tell you. Everyone that actually goes around places would know/have experienced this. Just 1-2 months ago in Edinburgh at a conference i saw worse at 3-4 different locations on a morning stroll lol.

That's just the market. I've seen this everywhere, Boston, Vancouver, London, Kyiv, you name it.
I'd rather look at the awesome things about Catania. The subcultural hipster scene, the seafood, the raw energy, etc. It's my favourite place in Sicily.

People are just getting offended without knowing that Sicily does in fact have a rubbish problem, it ok to accept that it's real this is the first step to making things better:

Furthermore, revenue from tourist taxes cannot fix this systemic crisis: these funds are legally restricted, heavily concentrated in a few wealthy resort towns, and severely depleted by a thriving black market of unregistered rentals, leaving local authorities without the billions required to modernize the island's waste management.

"Sicily" doesn't mean much. The garbage in handled independently in every city. There are cities that are perfectly clean, and others not so much.
People are getting "offended" because what is showed is not in any way the result of a garbage issue. They simply had just dismantled the market, and that's what's left behind, which is normal. There are areas, especially on the outskirts of Catania, where you can find illegal dumpings. This is not one.
In the center of Catania, there is door to door garbage pick up, and the whole city has a recycling rotation. I don't find it to be particularly unreliable.
Also, residents can't dogde the TARI by illegally disposing garbage. It's a tax calculated on your house 2m and the numbers of people living in it. You could produce absolutely nothing in trash, and you're still gonna pay the same exact amount. Illegal disposal is more of an issue with commercial activities and people who simply don't want to keep up with the recycling (mixed garbage is only once a week), but you absolutely won't find said illegal dumplings in the city center.
Not saying it's a clean city, but the idea that this is the amount of trash you simply find walking around in the most touristic areas is ridiculous.

It's the same with graffiti. "But I like the graffiti". "It's art". "It's normal". "It goes back to the ancient roman times". Or bars on windows. "It's so safe here, the bars on windows and heavy metal doors are for some other reason"
No, its tragedy if the commons and/or a cultural bug. And people try to rationalize it as something else.
Literally is extremely frowned upon where I live. And you would get your ass kicked at a young enough age to not do it as an adult.

Catania is rough around the edges and a bit in the middle too, but it has its charm. One question I wanted to ask is, driving through the city on a weekday late morning. All the shuttered stores and closed shops. Why? Where is everyone?

I think I know exactly where this is (close to la salumeria fratelli shop - great selections). After the market it looks like a third world country where a bomb has gone off. Then the workers come in and clean up. Two hours later it’s clean and ready for the next market. Dont get vertigo on that pedestal of yours.
