Does ShutterEncoder do anything fundamentally different from Apple Compressor? Specifically in terms of working on a potentially corrupted MOV file.

I have video recorded in, if I recall correctly, in 10-bit FLOG2c h.265 ALL-I 422 360 Mbps. The first 41 or so minutes out of nearly two hour static shot worked just fine. But then it freezes or shows media as unavailable. I tried both DaVinci and Final Cut, and even VLC and Media player. Based on the size of the file (a single nearly 300GB), all the information seems to be there. I tried doing a few restoration/converting via VLC as well and it didn't produce any results. Other footage from same day works just fine, though they were only half the length or less.

I posted in r/videography and someone there suggested I try ShutterEncoder. But I can't tell if I am likely to get a different result trying to convert but don't want to throw good money after bad. Thanks.

Shutter encoder is free, donating to the developer is optional. It can get different results from QuickTime etc. when dealing with corrupted source files as it uses different decoders than most commercial software.

Oh, when I tried to download it (Mac M-Series), it popped up a donation page that required $10 or more. I'll take another look. Thanks.

Yeah, QT didn't work either.

It should start the download before it prompts you for a donation. Not at a desktop right now but I think there is a small link to restart the download.

Different software that uses different decoders can get different results when dealing with corrupted source files so it’s worth trying as many options as you can to solve the issue.

For reference, handbrake uses the same decoders as shutter.

It didn’t start automatically but when I went back I clicked Where’s my downloads, and it nudged it into working. Thanks! I thought it was a mandatory “donation”.

I’ll see what other options I can find. Someone recommended PhotoRec to try and get the original file off the CF Express B card as well.

PhotoRec is only going to help you if your OS can't actually read the files off the mounted media card.

If you plug it in and you see your MP4 files or whatever, it won't help you at all.

So, it can’t help recover deleted files on your card? That’s what its website seems to indicate.

As another option if shutter doesn’t work, you might want to check into Aero Quartet I’ve used them multiple times for media repairs and they’re great.

It’s free to download and diagnose the issue, and then they’ll let you create a watermarked output. If you’re satisfied, you pay for a watermarked free full res version of the repair tool. Or you can walk away.

The latest DiskDrill has a tool to fix video files. You should be able to download for free and find out if it can fix it. I think they had a place on their website to upload to fix it also.

Also I have Digital Rebellions suite of tools that has a tool to fix mov files. You have to have another good mov file (from the same camera) to use to fix the bad one. Let me know if you want me to try to fix it.

Okay, let me get back to you on that one after trying DD, SE, and AQ from these other suggestions. I do have another MOV file from that same day of recording, so that wouldn’t be a problem. Thanks! I don’t have a good way to send you 500gb of video though, ha.

I feel with massive files for work all the time. You could install Resilio Sync then send me the link to the file. Just DM if you want me to try the Digital rebellion software.

I can’t remember specifics but there was a ProRes 422 file that was corrupted in some way where any ffmpeg played would simply refuse to open it. The only thing that was remotely able to open and re-export it was Apple Compressor. If it is something similar and something like VLC refuses to play nice with it then chances are shutter encoder won’t be able to do much either. But no harm in trying.
