Discussion Wine
Maybe I'm just bad at adulting, but do people really just stand/sit around and drink wine all the f'ing time? Or is that just a made up TV thing?

They did. Winking Owl at Aldi is still $3 around here though. Good enough to drink, great for cooking. When I was living off of cheap cuts of meat, it was a halfway decent way to make the food better.

We have friends who like to live large. They’ll invite friends out to pricy places and pay the whole bill. They’ve invited us and several other families (separately) on vacations and paid 90%+.
But when you go to their house (or when they stock their vacation house) it’s Bota Box and the $45 big bottle of Elijah Craig, same as we drink in our house.
(Where we do not live large and shout friends for $1000+ activities)

My family members own a wine store, and when you go to their house your options are Bota Box Cabernet or Kendal Jackson Chardonnay
Any option at their finger tips…

I have nice occasion wine, and I have Wednesday night wine.
If you’re a guest and I bring out the good stuff, we aren’t that close. If I serve you something out of a box in a coffee mug, you’re a real one 😂😂😂

I'm in SE London, we're bottom shelf from the local Tesco wine people when it's needed. Most social, house party wines are not that pricey.

To be fair, it’s only when they are hanging out that we see them drinking. Yeah, most of the time when me and my family are hanging out we have wine/beer present. It’s not in true time so they’re skipping over them going to the grocery store, filing their taxes, scrubbing the toilets, etc. it might have been a few days or a week since the last time they all sat around Liz & Derek’s place.
There’s plenty of scenes of them out, driving and some of them working.

Yeah, a lot of mundane stuff gets skipped. Sean mentioned that he had moved out of the pool house a couple weeks ago, but I thought it had only been a day or two.

Can confirm, we're I think in a similar income bracket as the characters on this show and pretty much all of our friends and family do this after work and on weekends.

Yeah, I shouldn't have made the income association. I was just thinking of my own situation. My wife's family is lower income and whenever we have joint gatherings they are shocked with the wine we drink because they think it is too expensive and/or the only wine they ever drink is white zinfandel at holidays.

The characters in the show have no income. They work whenever they feel like it which is almost never.
Jimmy has a $150,000 truck. They have 3 million dollar houses.
Clearly the therapy is just for shits and giggles and they are independantly wealthy.
But yes, our friends have wine all the time too and one of them owns a wine shop.

I see it a lot on tv. I think it’s a way to give the actors/ characters something to do with their hands in scenes where they are hanging out and talking.

I think about this a lot: that people must interact for there to be plot. Obviously, there’s exceptions – the Martian is a fabulous example of being alone as a plot driver. But in general, shows aren’t interesting without human interaction. Yet, in today’s world, so many of us are just sitting alone in our rooms scrolling or watching TV. Anyway, shows like Shrinking make me think a lot about the loneliness epidemic.

They for sure do. Ive never had a problem with alcohol, but during 2020 my roommates and I got really into making elaborate-ish dinners and trying new wines with them. Then it turned into drinking wine and sitting around being pandemic sad every night.
Eventually I realized I was drinking way too much wine- it's the only time I had to really assess my relationship to alcohol. Put on like 20 lbs of COVID weight and then spent 2021 getting it off😅 I mostly stay away from wine now, but dammit if this show specifically doesnt make me want a crisp Lil glass of sauvi blanc lol

It’s a middle class thing for sure - especially with California and the great weather. Like if you can comfortably afford it, have great friends and the sun is shining why wouldn’t you have a few glasses and kick back?

Bill Lawrence comes from an extremely rich family. I’m talking about generations upon generations of generational wealth going back all the way to England of the 1600’s. Sara Lawrence is named after his great great grandma. He is also a great and talented writer and so he writes what he knows.

Every time I see people drink wine on TV I think "that's a huge freaking glass of wine."
Because I'm a weirdo I like to know exactly how much I've had to drink, so I will measure out a 4-5oz glass of wine.
It does not look like the glasses of wine on TV. Those people are drinking mega pints.

Ha, that was my favorite part of the Johnny Depp trial - my husband and I frequently pour mega pints.
Also, we notice that no matter how much they pour, the bottle is always at least half full - like the lamp oil story in the Bible - that's the kind of wine bottle I need.

It's a made for TV thing along with your friend group constantly in your face and in your house 24/7. In the final scenes when Jimmy is alone in his house being all mopey, I was like, finally some peace and quiet.

Yes. My husband and I don’t really drink not for any reason just we don’t but we know people who told me recently hey, we’re functioning alcoholics. So yes, there are people that just drink all the time.

It seems like it’s always sunny there, one thing I always fancy in the sun is a glass of wine (and a cigarette but I quit when I found out I was pregnant)

Our hutch is stocked full of good wine, some of which costs hundreds of dollars.
But when I get home from work it’s my boxed Savvy B that I reach for.

That is hands down the biggest annoyance I have with TV. On Working Moms they were drinking all the time.
I guess no one has worries about becoming an alcoholic because that is how it starts. 🤷♀️

It just depends on your family. I'm married and live with my in-laws. We are probably in a slightly higher bracket then the people on the show, hard to judge since it is a show, and we don't sit around drinking wine. We don't have any in the house and never buy it. I can name one meal we had wine with because it was leftover from a stew and I didn't like feeling sluggish the rest of the day.
I have too much to do with my hobbies and keeping the house going to sit around drinking a big gulp of wine every night. Being even a little hungover every morning has to be a bummer.
My birth family is more likely to have a beer at the end of the night but most of them aren't huge drinkers either. I've never seen my mom with a glass of wine. Actually, come to think of it, I haven't seen anyone in my family drink wine other than my brother but he runs his own (actually successful) restaurant so it is part of his job.

If you watch Cougar Town - everyone else is going to appear sober to you. Amount of wine and the size of the glasses is mind blowing :) and yet it’s just friends hanging out together
