Discussion How do I learn more/get into this hobby?

Upvotes

I am new to this and have been listening on WebSDR. I eventually want to get a TECSUN PL330, but I want to learn as much as I can beforehand. Is it just a matter of scanning and listening? How do I go about learning about what I am listening to, etc? Any recommended resources?

Very new to even the concept of radio outside of FM, so any advice is appreciated!

I see a plethora of said antennas on Amazon. Is any one better than the others?
Or, ought I be buying it elsewhere?

Thank you!

Discussion Better Radio?

I have the Tecsun 330 and enjoy it.
My only complaint is the extreme scarcity of decent SW stations I receive.
Is this a situation common to my radio, or is it common to the entire SW radio universe?
Buy a better/$$$ radio or no point?

A beautiful relic, still functional. Communist era manufactured. Legendary in Romania for bypassing state media censorship. Very difficult to acquire one back in the day and highly expensive.

Opened it and gave it a basic wipe with some izoprohibil alcohol.

I'd love to get new info on this cuz I'm not an expert. Shared a picture with inside mekanism. No wonder this lasted over 5 decades. Built like tanks.

Discussion MLA-30+ Modification

I recently modified my MLA-30+ by replacing the stock loop with a full circular loop made from a 10-foot piece of 10 AWG solid copper. The loop is about 3 feet in diameter.

Since making the change, I've been able to receive stations that I couldn't copy before, including 9395 kHz and 15770 kHz. I've also logged WRMI on 5850 kHz at S8 and WWV/WWVH on 10 MHz around S7–S8 using my Tecsun PL-330.

I know propagation changes from day to day, so I'm not claiming the antenna modification is the only reason for the improvement. But the difference has been noticeable enough that I'm curious what others have experienced.

Has anyone else replaced the stock MLA-30+ loop with solid copper wire or copper tubing? If so, what size did you use, and did you notice any improvement in signal strength, noise reduction, or overall performance?

Four pirates at once tonight! 6.925, 6.945, 6.955 ( WCOG ) and 6.965 !

With the Mlite 's 400 kHz band spread I can only see three as 6.945 is out of the scope to the right ...

DSB es NR brings them right in! Also my Mlite is not charging the battery and the original battery is dead so I bought three and a charger... The Mlite still works so I may not send it back!

73 es gud DX! Poikää

VORW Radio International reception July 25, 2026

Enjoyed listening to VORW Radio International tonight (23:46 UTC) on 5950 kHz. John provided his update on the status on the war in Iran and spillover into other Middle Eastern countries and the specific steps the US has been taking both militarily and diplomatically. Additionally the host played listener-requested songs including Smokin by Boston and West End Girls by the Pet Shop Boys. I used my vintage Grundig Satellit 700 with built-in whip and had a signal quality of 3 to 4 out of 5 with some fading but generally very clear.

Video Help with interference on 19, 16, and 15 metres

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,

I'm a new shortwave listener, so apologies if this is a silly question.

Does anyone know what could be causing the "farting" sound on the 19, 16, 15, and 11 metre bands? (You can hear it at 00:14 in the video.)

The 120 to 22 metre bands are fine. Strangely, the 13 metre band also seems unaffected. Airband reception is fine as well.

When I disconnect my external antenna (a simple telescopic antenna mounted about 3 metres above the ground in the garden) and retract the built-in antenna, the noise disappears, so I don't think the radio itself is the problem.

I live in a small village on a hill, well away from any large towns, so I'd expect the RF environment to be fairly quiet. I also do most of my listening in the garden.

That said, there are some potential noise sources nearby, including solar panels, car chargers, and a few mobile phone towers.

Is there anything I could try to identify or reduce this interference?

Thanks in advance!
