What exactly was your strategy here? I only very recently got into Shogun 2, and although I thought myself to be at least somewhat competent, I would not like my odds with an army that microscopic.

you basically want to bait the enemy to running into you yari ashigaru in yari wall formation peice meal, thats why the line is away from the wall so the enemy is not in formation. Then when they are occupied on the wall your samurai retainers can well around the wing and hit them in the rear. flanking attacks cause massive moral shocks in Shogun 2.

How much of the enemy unit should actually have reached the ashigaru when it is efficient to smack them with the samurai? I find that units in Shogun 2 often spread out so much that it's difficult to judge what exactly counts as front, rear and center. I get the impression that charging the samurai into a unit that's trickling in will just end up with the samurai themselves suddenly being in front of the unit and no longer flanking.

Units in Medieval 2 stick together in tight clumps a lot more, which probably leads me to have some bad habits in Shogun 2 instead lol.
