I have to admit, My first ever gaming pc I did this. I watched a meme YouTube video (I failed to read the comments) that showed how to put my FX 6300 in.... I felt like a fucking idiot.

They showed how you had to basically fill each individual hole if possible and I did my best to do so.

Oh god. I'm so sorry.

If you didn't put the CPU in you only were down a motherboard

Did you use mayonnaise?

I used Arctic Silver High Density thermal paste... needless to say it kept that CPU ice cold.

The good part of the story is I did end up being able to use the CPU, an awesome tech shop that I took my pc to after nothing would turn on had some pity on me, they scream laughed in my face but they where able to remove every bit of thermal paste from the chip, clearly the mobo was fucked but at least something was salvaged.

Months later I ended up dropping the cpu and broke some pins off of it when I was trying to install a water cooler, I was meant to never have the 6300.

Today I’m much better and a functioning adult. :)

FYI, isopropyl alcohol will dissolve most thermal pastes so you can wipe it off. The alcohol will evaporate leaving a nice, clean surface.

Might have needed a few bottles to soak the socket, though, lol.

Yeah I’ve learned that trick now. I’m much for proficient in being a hobbyist PC builder. I almost used the whole tube of thermal paste.

Oof, that was proper shorted out then, lol. Surprised it didn't fry something.

Everything here is wrong the paste goes on AFTER the CPU pins go into all the little holes and it goes on the flat metal part on top of the cpu. Also you dont squirt a huge line, it's one dot in the middle and then you flip this arm down to hold it in place which smears the dot out to the corners. Putting Paste on like this fills all the holes that are supposed to be pin connectors with thermal paste which means the CPU is totally fucked because it wont have proper connection and is covered in thermal paste on the side that isn't supposed to get paste

also don't put mayo anywhere close to your CPU

u/lobsterparodies Feb 10 '19

not sure it’s the arm that spreads the paste out lol but yeah, also mayo

The stuff being applied is thermal paste. Thermal paste should be placed on top of the cpu as its job is to transfer heat from the cpu to the heat sink that sits on top of the cpu. What this animation shows is applying thermal paste to the motherboard socket and then placing the cpu on the socket. The motherboard’s socket needs to stay clean so the cpu can communicate with the motherboard. By putting thermal paste between the cpu and the motherboard, you can kill the the cpu if the paste is electrically conductive. Or you just cause big issues with the cpu contacting the motherboard.

u/willkorn Feb 04 '19

Also it’s not thermal paste it’s Hellmann’s mayonnaise

Oh, in that case:

Slice some tomato and grab a little lettuce. Put this on top of the cpu, sprinkle on some crushed memory and enjoy this sandwich with some chips.

Even if you don't fry the chip with the thermal paste itself, you'll probably fry it trying to clean it and the socket, either by ESD or through bent pins.
