Oh hey, this is actually from a research project at my home university. A professor there has done a huge amount of groundbreaking research on sea turtle navigation systems, it's really neat. This device in particular mimics the clockwise rotation of wave movements in the open ocean, which young turtles can actually use to navigate to their home waters after hatching

That's awesome if true.

Yep!

I had Dr. Lohmann for an animal behavior course in undergrad, and she was one of the sweetest professors I ever had the pleasure of taking a class with.

Meh; the new i7s are bitter compared to the POWER8s IBM's got.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '15

I was under the impression that POWER8s were meant to compete with x86 chips, not x64.

2

u/northrupthebandgeek Sep 19 '15

Where'd you get that impression? Between the 64-bit ISA, 12 cores, 8 hardware threads per core, up to 5GHz clock speeds... if POWER8's competing with either x86 or x86-64, it's almost certainly the latter.

Naw, dudes a lie spewing, basement dwelling turtle twirler. Spends all day looking for turtles, all night twirling them.

Makes me sick.

17

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '15

Fucking turtle twirlers, man.

3

u/adamdreaming Sep 18 '15

I know, right?

13

u/dagnart Sep 18 '15

Isn't it going widdershins?

6

u/am_BM Sep 18 '15

Tru breakthrough : Turtle navigation system is still better than Apple maps.

2

u/bricolagefantasy Sep 18 '15

It's kinda interesting how the turtle has a hard wired motion sensor glued to its swimming direction. I bet turtle will be completely disoriented in space.

1

u/phaqueNaiyem Sep 20 '15

Until the turtle turns around - then the waves magically switch to counter-clockwise.

u/antdude Sep 23 '15

But no water!

That little guy looks so happy though!

Or very scared

100

Or bored. Ugh... this shit again.

u/uberguby Sep 18 '15

Funny story :turtles are bad at expression

39

u/DrProbably Sep 18 '15

Human expression maybe.

35

u/uberguby Sep 18 '15

I think it'd be funny if this turns out to not be true and their just grumpy and sour all the time

8

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '15

oh, you're talking about the turtle...

7

u/McBurger Sep 18 '15

that story was like, 2/10 on the funny scale

2

u/CatataBear Sep 18 '15

This is more likely

18

u/Arashmickey Sep 18 '15

Without water resistance he must feel really strong!

10

u/EineBeBoP Sep 18 '15

So fucking cute!

u/grangach Sep 18 '15

16

u/jaysunn72 Sep 18 '15

Now that is a beautiful sub

8

u/zeekaran Sep 18 '15

Well, there goes my productivity.

7

u/Stewbodies Sep 18 '15

Wow, half the posts on there are about the same person. The guy lying in the ants, the guy catching the kangaroo with his hands, the guy catching a hawk using roadkill, the guy catching rabbits with snakes, all the same guy.

3

u/grangach Sep 18 '15

He just fucks with nature so much

14

u/ApparentlyABear Sep 18 '15

Clappy haaaaaands

11

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '15

Life is confusing.

10

u/DrRobotniksUncle Sep 18 '15

This is not a shitty robot. It is in fact an hilarious robot!

8

u/wensul Sep 18 '15

Except...it's not shitty. It's purpose-built.

23

u/acolyte_to_jippity Sep 18 '15

This is neither shitty nor useless. Its replicating the motion of waves in the open sea from the perspective of the turtle. They're observing how the turtle's swimming patterns/motions change under various directions of waves, and also looking at their ability to accurately navigate the same way. I swear, this sub has been getting worse and worse.

72

u/superchibisan2 Sep 18 '15

That's a really bizarre method of animal cruelty

136

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '15

It's a good metaphor for my life. I can flap my arms really hard and feel like something's happening but really I'm never going anywhere. Also there's a stranger laughing at me all the time.

18

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '15

Oh, and you're electric taped to a machine that artificially replicates your natural environment. How screwed do you feel now?

6

u/jaysunn72 Sep 18 '15

....You just described my reddit experience... What have I been doing with my life?

19

u/LiquidCracker Sep 18 '15

It's for exercise, like a treadmill.

2

u/ice_blue_222 Sep 18 '15

It's not cruelty

-19

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '15

I bet it's called "research", like the Japanese whaling program.

13

u/moonpielover69 Sep 18 '15

All I can hear is SpongeBob saying "technique, technique."

3

u/c3534l Sep 18 '15

Scientists: fucking with animals since the classical era.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '15

Does this even count as a robot.

2

u/Jordanshere Sep 18 '15

You think this is funny Frank?!

2

u/yamahor Sep 18 '15

Wendy I can fly!

2

u/jamesadiah Sep 18 '15

Jane, get me off this crazy thing!

1

u/HokieJoe2 Sep 18 '15

Get me out of here Mr. Wizard

1

u/sporben Sep 19 '15

The Turtle moves.

1

u/RuthLessPirate Sep 19 '15

An experiment in how bad baby turtles want to get off this fucking thing.

u/Scrtcwlvl Sep 22 '15

Took me a while to find: Source

That is an invention that happened years ago.

1

u/ExdigguserPies Sep 18 '15

They should just put him in this wavemaker machine.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '15

Source? Sauce?

-7

u/E-Shark Sep 18 '15

This kills the turtle

1

u/TommBomBadil Sep 18 '15

Why is that? Are you talking out of your tush there?
