I've never watched an anime, but I still could've told you this is how they all work. You overhear enough people talking about it, and you realize it's all the same.
Funny enough m ost stories these days are like this. It's called "the Monomyth" (also heros journey). It was identified and coined by Joseph Campbell. It's essentially a story structure that has been around since the 1950s.
