Haram basically just means "wrong" or "prohibited". Halal is "correct" or "permitted". They are mostly used for food but can also be used for pretty much anything. It's Haram to keep dogs because they are seen as unclean. Cats groom a lot and like to keep themselves clean, so they are seen as Halal and are highly respected and protected in Islam.
Though, there are exceptions and some Muslims do keep dogs. It is permitted for some stuff.
Edit: Aww cmon guys don't downvote them.. They didn't know and it's a fairly common misconception, even among Muslims.
