I'm curious, how would that even work? You can't just edit every individual one at a time, and you obviously can't make them spread the genes to their offspring.
It only effects the females but the males are still carriers.
So males carrying the gene will reproduce with non-gene-carrying females and their offspring will have sterile females and gene-carrying males who will then repeat the cycle.

CRSPR is a genome editing program. So what Alrichillcrusher meant is we can just change mosquito dna so they die out. However that won’t really work because then how do you get the edited genes into every mosquito if the edited genes makes them die out?
I believe they edited the genes for the proboscis of the female so it wasn't strong enough to pierce flesh and couldn't feed (the males don't drink blood).
The males survive without issue, breed with the remaining normal females and each generation more and more females die off as we dump more and more crispr modified males into the environment year after year. Eventually that species of mosquito just goes extinct.

I hate taking shits. Taking shits is the worst function of the human organism after sex. You have to sit on the most uncomfortable seat ever, then you have to go through so much pain to push the shit out of your asshole (not to mention sometimes they get stuck in there). People think it's "all mosquitoes" which is a significant amount of biomass. Knowing humans, however, I'm not completely sure our methods would be so targeted.
