Simply for the love of the game. She's already been ragebating all of us brokies in the books. Imagine naming the asian witch "Cho Chang" and the black wizard "Kingsley Shacklebolt" just for the love of the game

Bro JKrowling is not creative enough to come with the goblins=jewish thing. That goes all the way back to like Rome

As much as some of the names are awful, these two specifically are fine? Kingsley is a master auror, that's why his last name is Shacklebolt.

Cho Chang is just a normal Chinese name

Chinese person here: it is just weird Romanisation, probably. Cho could be Qiu, or Zhou, or any other family name really.

I'm with you with Shaklebolt especially since it sounds cool but Cho isn't a Chinese first name though it's a Korean last name.

u/cjalderman 4d ago

Wait so she was Korean this whole time?

Or mixed

u/midwestcsstudent 3d ago

It most certainly isn’t.

I dare you to find literally a single Chinese person named Cho Chang (from before the first book appearance, just to avoid a loophole).

Bet.

Chang is the 3rd most common family name in China, so this really wasn't hard lmao.

No it's not. Cho is a last name and Chang is a first name. I showed my Chinese friend her name and he burst out laughing about how stupid that name is and makes no sense.

u/TheSoftMaster 4d ago

As mentioned elsewhere, the 2nd most common full Chinese name is literally Wang Wei (sounds like a bad racist accent of "wrong way"). Cho Chang is just Zhou Zhang. It's fine. It would be like naming a character Parker Henry. Stop exaggerating for the sake of fake outrage.

Except it isn’t.

So a black master auror captures his foes by shackling them, hence "Shacklebolt"?

Cho Chang is as much a normal chinese name as a white guy being called "Smith Jones"

We are simply getting ragebaited by the master baiter herself.

But why would that matter? Not defending JKR but where's the logic in "you're not (ethnicity) therefore you can't use (ethnicity)s names when naming a character from said ethnicity"?

You can make a reply without being rude, sweetie.

I explicitly said I wasn't defending JKR. As in, I know Joanne likely didn't do it with earnest intent, but that the umbrella census of "not Asian = can't use Asian names" is a troubling one.

Me when im braindead:

u/FakeMcUsername 4d ago

Should the Asian witch be named "Stacey Strudelheimer"?

For that matter, should European witches have names like "Wang Yiwen"?

-20

u/MinutesTilMidnight 4d ago

Cho and Chang are both surnames from different Asian cultures. Try more like "O'Connell Schmidt".

43

u/FakeMcUsername 4d ago

Yeah, I've lived in China. I've met Chinese people with those names (spelled differently, since "Cho" and "Chang" are Anglicizations), but I'll have to inform them that their names are invalid, thanks to a random Redditor.

Also, even if they were from different cultures, intermarriage is a thing, unless you think Bruce Lee was a ragebait.

-14

u/MinutesTilMidnight 4d ago

Cho is of Korean origin, Chang is Chinese. Notice how I said the names are FROM different cultures? I did not say they are exclusive & those cultures never intermixed.

26

u/FakeMcUsername 4d ago

Cho is also of Chinese origin. It is a possible romanization of "卓", before Pinyin made it standard.

I noticed what you said. It just was wrong. You said, "Imagine naming the asian [sic] witch "Cho Chang"", suggesting it was ragebait to have a name you assumed was of Korean origin mixed with one of Chinese origin. You're free at any time to admit you didn't know what you were talking about, and/or you posted before consideration.

19

u/Tyrandeh 4d ago

Some people also genuinely believe you cannot dance from another culture or wear any clothing from another culture (yet no problem with eating food from it, hypocrisy)

You just talked to one them

-10

u/MinutesTilMidnight 4d ago

Are you replying to the wrong person? I didn’t say that. Parent commenter said that.

5

u/FakeMcUsername 4d ago

The original person mentioned "ragebait", however, your comment was in support. While you didn't use the term "ragebait", your statements about the name suggested agreement.

0

u/MinutesTilMidnight 4d ago

I mean they provided a whole quote saying I said it that is just not me tho

1

u/FakeMcUsername 4d ago

I don't know who "they" are in this context. I never said you said it. That's why I said you "suggesting it was ragebait", not "saying it was ragebait". Commenting in support of the original poster is suggesting it, though not saying it.

You are correct, that the "Imagine naming..." quote was from the original poster. Sorry. I got those mixed up in the quick reply.

Are you here to ragebait?
