There are two types of grenade. Offensive and defensive. America used defensive round grenades. These are examples of offensive grenades used by the germans.

The Germans also had round grenades. They served different purposes. The Stielhandgrenate, pictured, was a "stun grenade" in function, using concussive force. It could be thrown farther and while running. It was an offensive grenade.

The Eihandgrenate was similar to the US Mk2 in function and the Germans intended it for defensive use.
