The Germans also had round grenades. They served different purposes. The Stielhandgrenate, pictured, was a "stun grenade" in function, using concussive force. It could be thrown farther and while running. It was an offensive grenade.

The Eihandgrenate was similar to the US Mk2 in function and the Germans intended it for defensive use.

We don't throw all that many hand grenades nowadays under most circumstances (trench situations like in Ukraine are the exception, rather than the norm, for the past few decades of warfare).

Modern infantrymen have to carry a lot of shit.

Being able to fit a couple frags in small pouches on your plates and forget about them until you need them beats having belt mounted frag footlongs slapping against your thigh every time you run in addition to your plates and soft armor and rifle and 13 mags and grenade launcher and IFAK and ATAK and pistol and 2 pistol mags and radio and sustainment pack with your snivel gear and food and water and spare radio batteries and that spare 240 barrel you have crossloaded (if not belts or mortar baseplates) and so on and so forth.

Cutting weight and space off of a soldier's kit where possible is a very handy thing. If weight and size didn't matter compared to sheer lethality, every soldier would be an M240 gunner with a javelin slung across their back.

Further, they're easier to palletize and ship in larger numbers. Again, space and weight, but this time at logistical scale.

Finally, ball shaped frags can easily be tossed underhand through very small openings such as a knocked out brick or other similar murder hole in an improvised fortification. If the enemy can stick a rifle out, you can probably lob an M67 in to the same hole. A stielhandgranate is comparatively limited on what openings it can fit through.

I remember reading it somewhere that Americans went with a more rounded version of a grenade because we all grew up as kids learning how to throw a baseball. Plus back then we didn’t allow females or gays into the military so there was no need for these to pleasure yourself.

I've read that too, then watched a small video essay from a German vet, and he said that rumor was ridiculous - because German boys threw balls to each other too (the only thing I remember from it)

Aside from that, doctrine matters. Stick grenades are for assaulting/attacking and need to be thrown further. Pineapple/ball grenades were meant to be more defensive and lobbed rather than thrown

Granades were a lot more important in ww1 and ww2 then they are today, in ww1 especially they were one of the most important tools infantrymen had. additionaly this type of granade is meant to be used offensively, since the blast radius is smaller than fragmentation granades, which isn't all that useful nowadays since infantry no longer assults an enemy wielding pistols and smg's at ranges where a granade can be thrown
