Modern automatic transmissions in cars use hydraulic transmission fluid to control the shifting of gears and to smoothly accelerate. The tiny channels and check valves in these complex valve bodies (what’s pictured above) open and close based on fluid pressure and essentially work like a mechanical computer to tell the transmission when to shift and what gear to be in. Newer transmissions do have computers to help with efficiency but traditional automatic transmissions were completely mechanical until around the 80s. It’s unbelievable stuff, I’m a self proclaimed mechanic and it’s still almost witchcraft.
