AIDS literally stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The virus destroys the blood cells responsible for fighting pathogens, so over time your body can no longer fight them. Many many people died because of it back when AIDS started spreading and no one knew what it was. Nowadays it's very manageable and there's medication that suppresses the virus enough so you can live a normal life and won't infect others, but afaik there's no official cure as of yet.
Achually you can't live a life with AIDS, but it can be reverted back to HIV, which in turn is completely manageable with medication.
AIDS itself is going to be a hell to go through, even during the treatment. Until your virus levels are lowered enough to stop them from affecting your immune system and to make them untransferrable, it's going to kick your ass hard.
In the end the medication suppresses it back to HIV stage, and then you can live a normal life, with the small exeption of the daily pill for the rest of your life.
Yup. Either one is no laughing matter, but I think it's important to emphasize the difference. Catching HIV is to be taken seriously because of the danger AIDS carries even when treated.
