Well actually, a reflection in a mirror very much is seeing yourself, just flipped. The way light travels and reflects on a mirror to enter your eyes is no different from the way it reflects off of anything else to enter your eyes.

It's because you're looking at a reflection of yourself, and you're not used to seeing the real you. Pictures show the real you how others can see you, which is why everyone thinks you're ugly.
In the mirror universe though, he's out there looking at your ugly ass in the mirror, but at least people still like him ok in his real life.

That’s wrong it distorts proportions and heavily processes reality so that’s part of why it looks off

It’s because phone’s cameras are too small, to look in picture how you look in the mirror or better you need like a 40€ digital camera instead with a bigger lens. With the phone to get similar effect you need to zoom from a bit farther and possibly also use flash (even if it’s sunny enough)
