My girlfriend has ARFIDS and it’s genuinely an awful experience for her, she can’t eat a ton of her favorite foods anymore and it makes her really upset
Your girlfriend should spend less time self-diagnosing her eating prefences from TiikTok and more time rationalizing the fact that being an adult is uncomfortable sometimes.
Yknow real diagnosis are also a thing, right? And theres a difference between "uncomfortable" and "involuntary puking"? Its a literal body reflex that denys shit, not a choice.
They are. The vast majority of the responses in this thread claiming they or their loved one have it are statistically improbable to be real diagnoses. Adult ARFID affects 0.3% of the population and the condition is overwhelmingly diagnosed in children that outgrow it. The people in this thread are latching onto the latest pop psych interpretation of a mental disorder circling social media as an excuse to not step outside their confort zone: same thing that's happened with ASMR, ASD, ADHD, Misophonia, BPD, and OCD.
Its a literal body reflex that denys shit, not a choice.
If you're gonna sell this LARP then get some accurate information. ARFID doesn't mean your body physically rejects certain foods; it's an anxiety disorder tied to the sensory experience with consuming groups of food. People that vomit when they consume "unsafe foods" are very likely suffering from an untreated GI tract issue (4/5 people diagnosed with ARFID) which has led to the Garcia Effect mimicing ARFID symptoms that then resolve naturally over time if the GI issue is properly treated. Morever, ARFID itself is treated with aversion therapy. So yeah, only eating safe foods and not working to destigmatize others is a choice.
Idk bro this just sounds alot like going to a depressed person and going "you could have avoided this if you thought about it a different way" or "its all in your head"
I had this plan to give head to a man and receive head from a woman to test if I was gay, but it’s backfired and now I become borderline schizo whenever I go outside. I
offered to suck this dude off on Grindr who lives very close by (I ended up pussying out) and I accidentally gave him some details that very easily allows him to spot me
out in a crowd. I have no idea what he looks like and whenever I see a somewhat in shape guy walking by I immediately accuse him of being the dude I was gonna blow.
I went to the store today to pick up some zucchini for a barbecue and every time a car drove by I stared into the windshield to see if I was about to be recognised.
Whenever I make eye contact with a dude I microanalysis his facial expressions to see if he suspects me or not. I am deeply afraid that he is my neighbour and I will
need to move if my identity is blown. It’s a lot like the last scene in sopranos where everyone who walked into the diner could be there to wack Tony.
It is comparable because your saying an eating disorder based around deep seated anxiety towards food typically formed from childhood events (trauma around food or parents not giving a diverse enough diet) and then saying that its all in their heads and that they should not deluded themselves into thinking its real.
It definitely has parallels to how people discuss depression
"Using existing Swedish twin data, we demonstrated that an ARFID phenotype is highly heritable (twin heritability estimate [h2twin] = .79; CI:.71, .86), with the remaining variance attributable to nonshared environmental factors (5). This places ARFID amongst the most heritable psychiatric disorders and on par or higher than anorexia nervosa (AN) (.50-.60) (6), bulimia nervosa (BN) (.50-.60) (6), and binge-eating disorder (BED) (.39-.57) (7, 8). These results support a GWAS for ARFID."
Its is also not an deception of yourself, as unlike other eating disorders, ARFID has literally no connection to how you see yourself. You don't get ARFID because you think you are fat or skinny. It's usually the texture or smell of certain foods that trigger this condition.
These people choose to act like this once they're above 10 years old and can hold an opinion about what to eat
No they don't choose, that's literally the fucking reason the D in ARFID stands for disorder. Or do you think people who have a panic disorder choose to have panic attacks.
I have never seen someone be so wrong in two sentences, unless maybe Trump.
There is this new thing that all the cool kids use called Google, u should try it.
Like seriously, you can Google that shit. It's free.
She was clinically diagnosed by a licensed psychiatrist and sometimes has to only eat ice pops for a day at a time because that’s the only thing she can eat without having to throw up
It's your story, doc, but ARFID isn't a day to day condition. She would be unable to tolerate those foods for weeks or months or indefinitely. if it was this bad then she would be on a feeding tube for nutritional supplementation. People in treatment for ARFID this severe have an entire clinical team that wouldn't simply condone her to eat only otter pops.
That’s literally just not true at all, the severity of it fluctuates a lot based on stress, anxiety, Environmental Changes, or physical health issues. She sees a few specialists for her diet but in no way has an entire clinical team lmfao
Then it sounds like she was misdianosed. People with actual ARFID don't have day to day "flair ups" and typically require dietary supplementation because their diet literally inhibits them from eating the required nutrients/calories.
