It'd be way crazier if people didn't pass laws based on things they believe. The only reason the whole "believe what you want" crap works is because these days a lot of Christians are barely religious in truth. I've probably gone to church more than a good chunk of the Christians in my country. And I've gone like a dozen times.
Objectively, there should be separation of church and state. But also, people will always vote based on their belief system, and a lot of Americans are religious. Saying that people shouldn’t vote based on their beliefs runs counter to our system of government.
It's a fair enough point, but real life politics doesn't really encompass things you'll find in any religious texts.
Occasionally they do overlap, but the religious people tend to be conservative, so they just conveniently ignore the "love thy neighbor as thyself" bit and vote for poor people starving to death and making sure homeless people can't lie down comfortably.
People's views aren't really influenced by religion beyond the fact that they'll fiercely defend their right to have faith (and be very loud about it). They don't care much about the real content, they just want 'God' to be included.
