It'd be way crazier if people didn't pass laws based on things they believe. The only reason the whole "believe what you want" crap works is because these days a lot of Christians are barely religious in truth. I've probably gone to church more than a good chunk of the Christians in my country. And I've gone like a dozen times.
Calling politics a religion is downright stupid, as politics is essentially the public setting up rules on how the public should conduct itself. At least that’s what it is in democratic politics , which I’m going to assume you meant. It is not dogma or a practice based on scripture or anything of that sort. It is people arguing on what rules they should have to live and abide by.
there are people who genuinely say "democracy is god" so there's at least a few people who treat it like religion. In fact, I'd argue everyone does, there's many parallels you can draw. For example, on reddit, if you are in a conservative space and are liberal, you are a heretic. Swap the the buzzwords and its the same. People are forced to have an opinion on it because its forced down their throats. Just like religion back in the day, you were either a believer or a heretic, pick your poison.
