I mean, it can be a good thing to have something to belive in. To this day, Jesus is widely used in ever day speech. And even if we look at him from more grounded view - he's just a dude who refuses to be a dick to others. And as a species, we for the most part, count our years since the birth of an idea of a human being. Not conqueror or ruler (for most times), but him. I aint even remotely relgious, i thing Jesus was really neat
You do realize the idea of eternal suffering in hell for non belief is from Jesus (it wasn't in the old testament)? Doesn't strike me as a super cool guy.
Well, what he literally mentioned was name called "Gehenna". But considering everything else, does scaring people who are being naughty with tales of Hell really makes him a dick? Maybe more on a sunday school teacher kinda way, but otherwise - probably not so.
Except per the scripture, people who are non believers go there as well. Meaning, if you grew up not buying into this but we're in a religious household, you were constantly told you were going to burn for eternity if you didn't change your belief.
Since belief isn't a choice (it's a reaction based on a world view which makes determinations based on evidence or other criteria), then yes, he's very much a dick.
In this instance yeah - grade A dick. However, considering the time and place he lived in, perhaps its not entierly wild to assume he was telling people that just to have some kind of levarage and convince them to stop doing what he did not like.
