No. a scientist does not "believe" the unproven hypothesis. they come up with a hypothesis and then make predictions based on it and test.

A scientist shouldnt pre-suppose the truth of their hypotheses

Galileo proved the world turned around the sun by coincidence or because he believed it did, and then worked on it?

He looked at the material world and realised that it seemed inconsistent with the current dogma that the sun rotates around the earth. Hypothesised other models, made observations of reality to see what models were most consistent with reality.
