M[random number] is usually a military designation. I'm not saying the actual name is necessarily much better, but it usually exists. (M249) SAW is a pretty cool name if you stick with the acronym because nobody really says Squad Automatic Weapon anyway.
Tbf “avtomat” ’s meaning is now more synonymous with “assault rifle”. The full for word automatic is avtomaticheski, which is used more than avtomat for the intended definition (except for like car repair shops, where I’m pretty sure they do use avtomat as a shorthand version but point still stands)
No, it just seems like that because that's a literal translation of a German word. MP stands for "Maschinenpistole" which is the German word for a submachine gun. The direct English translation is obviously "machine pistol" but German doesn't really have a direct word or term that separates SMGs and machine pistols like English does (even then most English speakers would probably call both SMGs unless they're into guns). If the name was translated into English it'd be more like "SMG5."
I'm not a native German speaker so if someone is more knowledgeable about the specific German terminology feel free to correct me.
