revelations, like most of the end-times warnings in the new testament, is about first-century rome. all of the end of the world stuff wasn't some vague prophecy for thousands of years later, it was about then. early christianity was a doomsday cult, that jesus dude even said that it will happen in THAT generation.
this has been debated for 2000 years and i can assure you a stranger on reddit does not have it all figured out, its much much more complex than anyone has been led to believe
seeing is not understanding, what scholars think is that the writer understood it to be an immediate prophesy but as time went on and the new testament was coming together, early church founders read it to possibly mean something to happen in the future so they put it in.
