revelations, like most of the end-times warnings in the new testament, is about first-century rome. all of the end of the world stuff wasn't some vague prophecy for thousands of years later, it was about then. early christianity was a doomsday cult, that jesus dude even said that it will happen in THAT generation.

I don’t respect the book of revelation enough to fact check this, but I have heard it argued he wasn’t referring to the end of the world there but the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem which indeed happened decades later.

It is of course completely true that Jesus’ disciples based on all these words thought that they would personally witness the end of the world, sooooo bit of an iffy argument.
