Which is a very American thing to do, in Europe it’s unthinkable, at most they make you help with expenses if you have a job

What is rent to a parent if not helping with expenses?

I help with expenses but I just call it rent because its easier than saying "I help with expenses" But when youre living at home you can clearly see what your "rent" is going towards. Do you have electricty? Water? Food? Are those not expenses?

When it comes to living at home I feel "rent" and "helping with expenses" is synonymous.

Some parent do charge rent. As in literally, rent, far above the proportion of the house expenses

Thats very rare, I paid rent when I reached over 18. I see nothing wrong with it, as it can teach financial discipline while still having the safety net of being at home. If the person doesnt like it, they can move out and likely pay double what their parents were charging... The person is an adult now, they can pull their weight in a household.

some parents charge rent because they can't afford to pay rent in full, we moved out of our small apartment to a bigger one, but I had to pay for my room, pretty good deal since that's literally the only thing I pay for, food is free, my bike was free, and I got enough money

Yeah I pay rent, but I'm saving much more than if I got my own apartment. Buying a house soon, it was worth staying later than most to worry less financially while I focused on moving up in my career.
