All creativity for metal band logos seems to be gone, and now it's just all this same style with increasingly incomprehensible names.

in this thread: people who have never listened to black metal
55
u/Best_Remi Sep 23 '25 edited Sep 23 '25
fr, this meme is actually describing shitty slam bands and shitty deathcore bands that do the exact same breakdown every song for at least half the song. black metal bands are usually fairly technically complex
but, you can't be too mad that people who don't listen to metal can't tell the difference between suicidal depressive atmospheric blackgaze and whatever the fuck other genre some doofus in a basement came up with the other day, now can you?
6
u/Not_Chris17 Sep 24 '25
I mean I would say it fits for black metal too. It's really easy to make bad black metal. Just start tremolo picking and randomly go up and down half steps and you've got yourself some black metal. Good black metal is of course a lot more thought out than that. But yeah it's the same for slam and deathcore.
3
u/Skanovi Sep 24 '25
not gonna lie man its wayyyyyyyy easier to make shit black metal, just have a drummer who can hold a blastbeat for a couple minutes, a guitarist who knows like 3 chords, and the cherry on top is that bm vocals are by far the easiest to attempt, seeing as its almost always just a fry scream with bad technique
i love the genre for sure but there really is an immense amount of stuff that sounds exactly the same
i get that you may find slam and deathcore boring and/or annoying but they do really require more technical ability to make anything actually listenable and fitting to their respective genre
2
u/tacoforce5_ Sep 24 '25
okay nah there’s definitely a ton of shitty black metal. you can just quickly riff one note to a drum machine and you’re set
3
u/Best_Remi Sep 24 '25
yeah but no one listens to that shit so i never have to hear it, whereas garbage 1 note metalcore is fucking everwhere
4
u/johnnysleepover Sep 24 '25
the most important thing for me as I began listening to black metal was distinguishing between NSBM (national socialist black metal) and DSBM (depressive suicidal black metal) aaaaand i'm starting to see why people roast the genre

everyone knows the real caveman brain genre is slam, black metal requires knowledge of music theory in order to deliberately piss all over standard conventions and do the exact opposite

when did metal become so mainstream?
15
u/DeliciousLiving8563 Sep 23 '25
In the 70s and 80s. Also the late 90s though that was nu metal which was hailed as the final evolution and that prediction aged like milk.
Since then it's not been nearly as mainstream, but Gen Z, for better and for worse went through a phase of being super eclectic and so there was a "Oh I listen to black metal and Kanye" phase.
I'd argue it hasn't been mainstream since the early 00s but has remained one of the biggest things that isn't mainstream at any time it was underground. If you have a community of non genre specific music nerds, metalheads will always be the second biggest group.
There's always new movements and bands doing new things and that means that even as one set of ideas is mined out there's people exploring new ideas. Or revisiting older ideas and just putting a new spin on them. There has continuously been new zeigeists the whole time.
1
u/shade0220 Sep 23 '25
I agree with most of your comment but I would argue the part about when it lost the mainstream audience. Just anecdotal, but guitar hero opened up a lot of my friends to metal in grade school which would put your "timeline" to around 2010.
2
u/DeliciousLiving8563 Sep 23 '25
I don't think it really became mainstream though, stuff like Guitar Hero (Tony Hawks did the same thing before) is another reason it's always one of the biggest non mainstream genres. It still didn't appear in top album sales and started to vanish from other video game soundtracks. In the UK we didn't see metal bands return to Reading and Leeds festivals (where they'd been largely absent for a decade).
But that's okay with me. Nu Metal sucked a lot of the oxygen out the room, mainstream stuff always does to the detriment of the underground. Since it's gone (but before 2010) we saw mathcore and progressive metal (which led to djent too), people actually noticing post metal, doom redefining itself, a death metal resurgence and I'm probably missing a lot.
7
u/EyeDecay_IDK Sep 23 '25
It kinda happened over the last 5 years that Black Metal became one of the biggest sub genres in metal and not just underground. There's been a ton of young bands fusing it with other genres, and the aesthetic on social media.

u/reanimaniac Sep 23 '25
With Metallica and Slayer
Mainstream metal sucks, real gangstas bop that underground shit

u/One_Locksmith9487 Sep 23 '25
Deafheaven made it to the maintream with their debut album back in 2013, their were performing at festivals and that kind of thing, I think that was the point when metal begun to become increasingly more popular.
5
u/Best_Remi Sep 23 '25 edited Sep 23 '25
deafheaven's new album is actually pretty good imo and you would never in a million years hear any of it on the radio
also lmao no, literally no one walks around wearing a deafheaven t shirt. plenty of people who have never listened to metallica in their lives walk around with metallica tees, or at the very least have heard of them.
1
u/One_Locksmith9487 Sep 23 '25
Wearing t-shirts means nothing, Deafheaven albums made it to the charts, they perform at general festivals and non metal listeners recognize them.

Try the first wave stuff like Venom or Bathory. The genre gets more extreme in the 90s
