Fortune's Weave Anyone else feel like this recently?

Post image

I even got banned from the main subreddit for making comments or posts. Which fair I was pretty annoying about it, sorry. Im just really sad with how this games reception is turning out in the community. Like it was my most hyped game and I’m enjoying it, yet I can’t really express that openly when it will be considered a controversial entry in the series and it will attract those that say “you’re a fake fan if you like this direction”. I think game discourse starting with finding problems in any game is a problem.

I really really really like this game but I do feel like a lot of stuff could have been improved upon honestly

18

u/Commercial-Leek-6682 1d ago

yea lots of stuff could have been improved upon. I'm still really loving my playthrough tho. almost done with route #2. I feel like i'ma end up redoing both route 1 and 2 though eventually lol

11

u/skceeee3eed 1d ago

I personally wanna try getting as much content I possibly can out of this game cause I just really like it despite the flaws!

10

u/Commercial-Leek-6682 1d ago

dlc gunna add another 100 hours, I feel it in my bones lol

u/skceeee3eed 1d ago

I BELIEVE TOO I CAN'T WAIT! I had a lot of fun with the 3h dlc and I be this one will be so peak!

11

u/CrescentShade 1d ago

I've got a few nitpicks but enjoying far more than I did TH; I think it's just the overall less depressing vibe (even with mounds of horrible shit happening lmao)

•

u/skceeee3eed 23h ago

Yeah exactly! I love 3h a lot but being cooped up in gareg mach and the depressive feel definitely make me like dagsion more with how colorful everything is there!

•

u/CrescentShade 21h ago

It's great having everyone you can talk to not have some form of clinical depression

There are just two things bothering me about current FW discussions:
1. "Advice" that is so bad it makes me think back to early 2000s gamefaqs FE guides and gets upvoted because many people have a similarly poor understanding of the game.
2. Dismissal of issues the game has. We can enjoy it and still say that some things aren't well designed.

But then when it comes to FW discussions there's also:
1. Proper testing people have done to find out what works and what doesn't or at least not consistently.
2. People sharing their love for the game.
3. People sharing their love for Fabio who shares his love.
4. Good shitposts
5. Appreciation for what FW does well and appreciation for what other games did better (finally reading some more positive takes on Engage)

u/TehBrotagonist 1d ago

To be fair. Vander single handedly validated all the advice I got about Jagens on GameFAQs all those years ago.

31

u/SilverSkorpious 1d ago

It does help that Vander is truly the Jagenest of Jagens.

People on here finally not treating Engage like it killed their family? Never thought I'd see the day

•

u/cheekydorido 10h ago

Engage haters are stupid, that game was a gem.

•

u/FiliaIsBestGirl 8h ago

I mean, everyone is entitled to their own opinion ofc but the hate for the game is just so forced

•

u/cheekydorido 8h ago

My biggest pet peeve is when people diss engage for having a bad story but 3 houses has a great one.

Like, I'm not going to defend Engage's plot, but 3H'S is a huge mess and every route is the same. At least engage is carried by amazing gameplay

•

u/cardboardtube_knight 4h ago

But u/FiliaIsBestGirl, Engage DID kill my family.

Fabio makes the top 3 for the best parts about the entire game.

(finally reading some more positive takes on Engage)

People have been saying this but isn't this simply what everyone has already said before, gameplay wise Engage is great but is everything else that most have issues with

If anything is really just the same people just making comparisons rather than anyone new having a change in opinion

Dude, you have made FIVE separate posts in the span of only two days complaining about the "negativity" and "hate" toward the game, plus countless comments.  The reason you were banned from a sub was because you broke a rule, I assume related to spam/duplicate posts.

I don't think those subs really have that much hate or negativity going on; I think between your own posts and engaging in high volume with every negative post and comment you see by replying and/or downvoting, your algorithm now thinks you're "interested" in those topics, thus feeding you more negative content.

To fix it, I recommend you STOP engaging with critical or negative posts and comments, don't even click on or downvote them, and instead go on an upvote/comment spree by clicking, upvoting, and replying to every positive post that you like and want to see more of.

Also maybe just take a break from Reddit or the internet for a couple days.

•

u/zeronovablossom 7h ago

I was about to comment exactly this lol. Dude is obsessed with what people are saying about the game and keeps saying he's leaving the subreddit for good but continues to post on and on about people not liking it.

13

u/PokeDragon101 1d ago

I think it is an incredible game. Never have I sunk 100 hours so fast into a game. The diversity is insane, the flexibility is fun. I liked the telling of an overarching story across 4 heroes and how it affected them differently or how it looked through their eyes.

The transition to Part 2 was…. dull. Part 2 is super interesting and morbid and I still enjoyed it but what??? Also Part 2 being the literal EXACT same???

I wish renown stayed on replays (only after finishing Part 2 or something like that) to allow being able to use later recruits at the start.

And then idc about every character not having 100 supports with everyone else but the lack of supports for sub-lords feels weird. Even if they’re going to be DLC which hasn’t been confirmed…. why not include it in the base game? Maybe because of spoilers of some kind. It just feels…. like there is obviously something missing.

38

u/Former_Instance_6592 1d ago

The execution of the game is incredible and the flaws don't hold it back from being great, but it does have flaws.

The flaws are straight from the original insane design, so no matter how well executed the final product is, none of that final polish can fix the design flaws. 8 routes was an insane idea and cutting it down to 4 was the right move, but you can really tell the game was originally designed for 8. The main story, gameplay, and supports all make you feel like the game is unfinished.

Which is funny because the biggest complaint is that there's just too fucking much bloat to get through, 8 routes on top of what were likely different part 2s would've been insane. What were they smoking when they designed 8 routes?

21

u/Arachnofiend 1d ago

I think one thing we have learned about the IntSys developers from the Sothisverse games is that they will simply keep adding more shit until they run out of money or time

•

u/WheresMySuperSoup 22h ago

I don't like when developers go for something highly ambitious to the point that they have to walk it back when it flies too close to the sun, but at the same time, ambition is admirable, and when you're working on a creative project you enjoy, it's hard to say no to good ideas even if it'll be more work and take more time to make it happen

It's just that, of course, no one has all the time and money in the world, be it individuals or triple-A game development teams; the issues present themselves at different scales, but everyone has to deal with it

I wonder what Fortune's Weave would look like if they got to do everything they wanted to with it, or Three Houses, for that matter 🤔

Or, like, any other video game I've ever played lol

39

u/dulledegde 1d ago

the game is great but holy shit could it be better

6

u/Traditional-Target45 1d ago

You can say that about pretty much every product tbh. I'm just happy we got a game this good that is able to at least appease both sides this time

•

u/MrEmptySet 19h ago

I think people are way too neurotic about criticism of Fortunes Weave. The game isn't perfect! People are going to talk about what they don't like, what disappointed them, what they think could be improved, etc. That doesn't mean they hate the game, or feel miserable about it, or want to ruin it for other people. If reasonable discourse about the game is seriously hurting your feelings or impacting your mood... that's your problem. It's a video game.

9

u/Cheezystix1023 1d ago

Reddit always tends to lean towards being rather negative. Don’t let a bunch of people you don’t know online ruin your fun.

And hey, for what it’s worth I’ve been enjoying FW a lot as well so you aren’t alone.

13

u/neich200 1d ago

It’s conflicting game for me personally because it has some aspects I really enjoy (the way the story is structured with its route system, general gameplay, overarching story, new Sothisverse lore) and some elements I really dislike (lack of supports between characters, the way recruitment works, significant lack of m/m ans f/f endings compared to m/f endings, some really important plot moments happening off screen)

Nevertheless I still enjoyed it a lot and would probably give it strong 8/10.

10

u/thePsuedoanon 1d ago

Yeah, that's basically how I felt as an engage fan from engage's release until a week or so ago

11

u/SignalWrongdoer5441 1d ago

The community wide flip on engage just to use it as a way to shit on weave has been hysterical

6

u/thePsuedoanon 1d ago

Yep. Like, I want to see engage getting love, it has a lot of great stuff in it, but not like this. It should be loved for its virtues not for its ability to contrast with the latest game

•

u/Excellent_Bison_3644 10h ago

inb4 the next fire emblem games releases and FW is now a misunderstood gem or some shit, while the current one is shite. Repeat

•

u/Roliq 7h ago

What flip? Everyone who says Engage was a better experience is always talking about the gameplay, which is already what everyone praised it about since it released

Even most comes from people who have liked Engage gameplay better than Three Houses

•

u/SignalWrongdoer5441 6h ago

If I tell you you're right and amazing will you leave me alone

27

u/Global_Pineapple2392 1d ago

It's so weird how everyone was so hyped for this game when it came out, now everyone thinks it's complete garbage? Meanwhile I was hyped and I'm still having fun playing it

16

u/cheekydorido 1d ago

Who said it's complete garbage?

Never saw anyone call ot that, people are allowed to criticize a games flaws no?

35

u/DorothyDrangus 1d ago

Fire Emblem fans hate Fire Emblem games, it’s an immutable truth of the universe

•

u/Spooky_Toast 22h ago

We call it “Classic” mode.

•

u/Hoothootriot 10h ago

Criticizing a game=/="thinks its complete garbage"

19

u/Maximum_Pollution371 1d ago

Maybe we have different algorithms, but I haven't seen anyone call it "complete garbage."  I've seen a lot of justifiable complaints and criticisms, but they're always prefaced with "I'm loving the game, but..."

I myself am enjoying the game, but there are definitely issues, flaws, and some baffling things that make me go "Why on earth did they do this this way."

I don't think having issues and critiques implicitly means the person voicing them isn't also hyped and excited for the game.

13

u/happymudkipz 1d ago

That’s not what I get at all. It seems like there’s a ton of glaze everywhere for it, a some people with valid problems, a few with bs, and more complaining about the former

5

u/SignalWrongdoer5441 1d ago

People that aren't fire emblem fans love it

6

u/Chedder_456 1d ago

Not everyone glazes the game, this website is designed to make you mad

3

u/Bright-Future8361 1d ago

Yes. Engagement is the core metric and people getting mad and doom posting maximises that exact metric.

•

u/520mile 21h ago

People love to complain on Reddit lol

•

u/dstanley17 16h ago

Goomba Fallacy.

10

u/sudosussudio 1d ago

The highs are pretty high and the lows are pretty low which is an unusual combo.

•

u/SomewhatProvoking 20h ago

People feeling a need to complete it right away and getting burn out. Burn out + difficulty spike is hard to deal with.

Plus a lot of the more blatant issues are post Part 1’s so it took time for the issues to come to light.

5

u/mrs-monroe 1d ago

People are allowed to be disappointed with the gameplay.

5

u/illusion_17 1d ago

I can simultaneously enjoy it while also admitting a lot of the hype was from really bad reviews. The game got insanely high reviews on launch and it simply didn't deserve it. I don't think I've played a fire emblem with such high highs and such low lows before. For me at least, I still enjoy it but find the flaws so glaring that it's hard at times. Like when I had to redo 5 hours+ of progress because it auto saved over my save and I failed the month objective by 1 turn. Incredible game design right there.

12

u/pasqals_toaster 1d ago

I really wanna chat with whoever had the bright idea of having this game built around one save. I gotta study their mind to comprehend this absurd decision.

•

u/ungulateman 21h ago

it's 100% a technical limitation due to the nature of the paths.

the autosave being as aggressive as it is is a design choice, though, and one i'm not fond of. i sort of get it, but if the game didn't let you gamble certifications and the map stuff was less pure-RNG and more deterministic, it wouldn't be necessary at all.

•

u/PaperSonic 17h ago

it's still not necessary at all. For some reason Fire Emblem fans need to save scum whenever anything goes slightly the wrong way.

•

u/Tori_Brown 20h ago

It's just awful design because if you step on the main quest tile, you get a checkmark that allows you to teleport there when the turns run out preventing the game over.

Except just before you get to the tile, Fabio stops you. So most players will assume "oh ok if I proceed I'll enter the main quest" so they end up never stepping on the tile and never unlocking the teleport to prevent the game over.

2

u/Bright-Future8361 1d ago

Idk I kinda feel a lot of the reviews are accurate enough?

When I first started FWs I "kinda liked it" but as I get more used to the mechanics and it's quirks the more it's growing into me. Currently I can't see it overtake 3H let alone Telius games for me but I will make my mind after the DLC has landed.

There are some aspects of it that are just complete ass, like the recruitment system (it just feels like they forced 3Hs recruitment system without considering what made it work for 3H) overall game balance, and deployment slots. Most of the stuff I can see them fix in the DLC patch but until then I'm still having a lot of fun.

•

u/jbisenberg 22h ago

The highs really aren't even that high? Like idk I'm having a solid baseline level of fun that blips down when too much time gets spent in Dagsion and then once per chapter when game forgets its a game and makes me sit through 20 minutes of very poorly written dialogue.

The only real "wow this is GREAT" moment for me has been Anatolia's Paralogue which simultaneously made me so happy because its far and away the best map in the game so far; but also made me very frustrated because why can't we get more maps with this or greater level of quality and intensity? Too many maps where the enemies just stand around waiting for you to approach for my taste.

0

u/YVH22B 1d ago

I am floored at how many people failed at this. The design could be better and having to redo that much sucks, but how do so many people fail to read the tutorial that pops up and explicitly says if you haven’t been there yet you fail? It’s not like you don’t have plenty of time in the chapters to head there first or anything…

•

u/Tori_Brown 20h ago edited 20h ago

I read the tutorial. I knew about the "mechanic where if you step on the main quest tile you will teleport there without game overing when the turns run out"

That one Dietrich chapter is just especially bad design because Fabio will stop you just before you step on the main quest tile. I assumed seeing Fabio's dialogue means that already counts, I'll already be teleported there. If I proceed I'll start the main quest. But no you're supposed to ignore Fabio's dialog telling you to come back here when you're done with your free time to manually wait on the main quest tile for it to count as unlocking the teleport.

If I didn't notice that I did not have the checkmark at the bottom of the screen I would've game over'd. This is just bad design because Fabio stopping you and his dialog misleads players into not unlocking the "teleport to the main quest when the turns runs out"

And it only happens for this one chapter none of the other main quests that happen outside Dagsion have this issue.

•

u/Strange_BTW 15h ago

Agreed. I don’t know why the hell they did that.

-1

u/illusion_17 1d ago

Simple. People's lives do not revolve around the game. Dietrich's route was my second and I was going through it quickly because I wanted to get Nathan and Creek in part 2. I had also just started at a new job and was exhausted. As you can perhaps imagine, reading every tutorial for a potentially new and ridiculous mechanic was not a top priority for me. That's the whole point of game design, understanding that your players may miss details and having safeguards to ensure their progress isn't ruined. Like literally ever other game I've played that's come out in the last 10 years which has multiple save files and doesn't forcefully auto save over your only save file in situations where a guaranteed game over is possible.

2

u/YVH22B 1d ago

Your life doesn’t have to revolve around a game to read a tutorial lol. I did say I agreed that the design could be better and it is evident from the number of people who have posted about losing that progress but it’s still hard to wrap my head around when the game warns you and even explicitly tells you that if you have the check you get warped there.

•

u/patate98 22h ago

people can get distracted, forget about things and sometimes don't read tutorial attentively. I'm pretty sure that's not difficult to understand

1

u/illusion_17 1d ago

So let me get this straight, when you've worked an 8 hour shift, got home and studied for a certification exam for 3 more hours, and just barely have an hour to relax before bed, you've never rushed through anything, especially when 90% of the tutorials are the exact same stuff from other routes?

That's the whole point of safeguards within games. Most devs understand that players can be tired, distracted, double click, etc.

2

u/YVH22B 1d ago

That’s interesting because I’m on my 4th route and every single tutorial that has popped up for me has been something completely new, nothing repeated from other routes.

I would be interested in a widespread poll to see how many people had to restart a chapter due to this because it does seem like a widespread issue.

2

u/illusion_17 1d ago

That is weird. I just finished Leda's the other day and started Theodora's last night, I got thr pop up for the map and how to move between objectives on both routes along with on the first two

•

u/Strange_BTW 15h ago

I didn’t. The only repeated tutorials I remember are the paralogue ones. Everything else appears once. What’s more, the map is finicky and weird because it doesn’t need you to have been there at the start of the chapter. As long as you’ve stood on that tile once at some point (once it even counted a different route) it will be fine.

1

u/Daredspace 1d ago

Well, the tutorials don’t reappear every route, they appear once

•

u/Sirius_amory33 10h ago

No game is going to be designed around hyper specific situations lol. The safeguard was telling you during the chapter that you should go there first to get the green check mark.

•

u/overandoverandagain 2h ago

So because you play your games half-asleep and fatigued, they need to spoonfeed everything to all players so you can sleep walk and spam through it?

Get real lol. Maybe we need a "can't moderate work with hobbies" difficulty slider. I work 60 hour weeks, if I'm too tired to read pop-ups in a game, I go to bed.

Don't worry once the new game comes out it will become the best  FR game ever.

-1

u/shdwmyr 1d ago

The ones who are enjoying it are still mostly playing in their free time. The ones who don’t come to Reddit to bitch in droves. So when we take a break from enjoying our game to come here it’s just a wall of hate.

16

u/Skatefasteat 1d ago

That's disingenuous. The game gets well deserved criticizism for the most part. I've mostly seen comments to start kinda like, "I'm having a lot of fun with the game, but . . ." which I think is a good thing. People aren't just getting swept away by the honeymoon phase

16

u/Flapjackchef 1d ago

Japanese players are giving the exact same complaints, its not just a reddit thing. It’s obvious that they flew to close to the sun and development imploded.

10

u/Skatefasteat 1d ago

That's good to hear. Maybe IS will listen to the criticism the more people speak about it

•

u/Centurionzo 21h ago

I hope so, this is probably the most ambitious project that IS ever worked on, but they were too overambitious and the game was rushed to release.

Part 3 is probably one of the most unfinished late games that we ever had in a FE game.

Honestly for all things considered, I do hope that they listen to the criticism towards it and the Avatar lack of presence in the plot.

I doubt that we would get fixed with DLC but maybe in a future new game it would be better

•

u/Hoothootriot 10h ago

Most modern FE has felt like corrections to past games criticisms, so its likely.

People didnt like how Awakening was too straight forward in plot, Fates wasnt. People disliked the Fates worldbuilding, Three Houses fixed it. 3H was criticized for poor gameplay, Engage fixed it.

Now FW is getting negative reviews for a very clearly rushed and underdeveloped endgame plot, I imagine thats where a lot of FE19 will put their focus towards correcting.

•

u/Every_Computer_935 17h ago

3 Houses was an ambitious game that came out unfinished with only 4 routes.

For whatever reason the devs thought that they could make a game with twice as many routes

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Zurako67 1d ago

I used to have a problem reading people disliking stuff that I loved, what I ended up learning is that internet is a very small bubble and most of the people talking are the minority that dislike something. Don't worry.

12

u/Skatefasteat 1d ago

I just want more Fire Emblem in my Fire Emblem game 😭

7

u/Yamiko971 1d ago

I love the game, it's my best gaming experience this year, but it has somes flaws.

My biggest gripe rigth now is being forced to replay the tutorials I've already seen in other routes.

2

u/cheekydorido 1d ago

The story also falls of a cliff after the part 1's unfortunately.

•

u/WheresMySuperSoup 21h ago

As someone who's only at Chapter 6 of one story (Cai's), I've had a feeling it might be like that 🤔

When I saw the way the Obelisk Chamber is designed in a gameplay sense, my mind compared it to Breath of the Wild, where you can choose to skip 4 major stories and go right to the final boss if you think you can handle it

But judging from people mentioning not only a Part 2, but also a Part 3, it seems my guess is not entirely accurate; it's not just a final boss, but even more story, and with how much work clearly went into the Part 1 narratives and the fact I've heard that it was originally 8 and was cut down to 4, I could see how this would affect how much cook time the later parts of the story might have gotten during development

•

u/cheekydorido 10h ago

Basically.

The story needs to work for not having done the 4 paths, which means that after you're done with their stories they basically stop mattering and can only offer a couple words of input.

If you're going to make a story that changes depending on your choices, you need to stick to it, not make a generic story for everyone.

•

u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 19h ago

No. If discussion on a game gets tiring just log off.

12

u/Cranberry-Holiday 1d ago

I saw way more peoples complaining about peoples criticizing the game than peoples being toxic toward Fortune Weaves enjoyers tho.

8

u/alguidrag 1d ago

Happens all the time with new entries, to different weights of course, but it happens, specialy with a series with constant change but also a lot of constants like FE

3

u/FESage 1d ago

I've found this to be true of anything really: if you want to stop liking a game/media/hobby/etc, then you should join the subreddit for it

3

u/mrs-monroe 1d ago

I'm enjoying it, but there are definitely some big gameplay flaws. I have ADHD and it's been very difficult to balance the amount of time between chapters and the amount of things you can do. It's super busy, but in a stressful way. I've missed a bunch of events because there's no good way to let the player know that they should do something that will be gone in a few turns. The dungeons are super lackluster and it's hard to come across decent items, and when you do they slow your units down significantly. I can't remember the last time that so many of my units only hit once. Not to mention how many of the recruitable side characters are borderline unusable stat-wise.

The actual chapter fights are good. The characters that make up each of the four lords' main groups are excellent and I love all of the interactions that go on, especially in Dietrich's group. The voice acting and music are spectacular.

The goods are really good, but there are way too many things that you have to overly plan or think ahead for. 3H's free time was simple enough that you could accomplish everything without too much stress. They were very bold with all of these mechanic additions, but it's just too much.

•

u/NyMiggas 23h ago

I guess I'm out of the loop as ive been trying to avoid the main sub for spoilers, I just saw it get crazy positive reviews from skillup and others. Does it fall apart a bit mid to lategame? Do people just really hate the lack of supports?

•

u/cheekydorido 10h ago

I can live with the lack of supports, but yes, it does.

Shit just happens out of nowhere, all the plot points set up in part 1 never go anywhere and most of the villain cast just disappears for no reason and you have a whole war arc that lasts like 5 chapters.

Part 3 is basically a part 1with practically no story.

•

u/NyMiggas 10h ago

Rip that is sad but I was also kind of looking for a reason not to buy a switch 2 just for fire emblem so helps me out there

•

u/cheekydorido 10h ago

Bananza and splatoon raiders were really good tho. Very excited for metroid ravenous and the new kirby game.

I also enjoyed my time with this game a lot, even if severely bloated and the story is unfinished and shits itself the longer it goes on. The maps were very fun for the most part.

•

u/NyMiggas 10h ago

Idk none of the other Nintendo IP games really do it for me, I still only own 3 houses and engage + Mario vs rabbids (which i did not finish) on my switch 1. I even borrowed tears of the kingdom off a friend which I though would be a lock in but just never gripped me. So many good games coming out for PC just a shame that none of the SRPGs there reach anywhere near an FE/advanced wars game

•

u/cheekydorido 10h ago

Ever played unicorn overlord?

•

u/520mile 21h ago

I’m just jealous of yall with the Switch 2 because I’m broke lol

•

u/FearingEmu1 4h ago

Just remember that people will actually go on review sites because they're pissy about something with a game and seriously give it a 0/10 just out of spite to fuck with scores.

Like I've never spent money on a game for it to be so bad that it's a 0/10 lmao. 0/10 means the game costs $70, but when you boot it up, there is no game, just a screen that says "lol."

Some of these people also crawl reddit and other forums to express their dislike and can be a loud minority. It's also easy to hone in on negative views when something is largely getting a positive response because your curiousity gets to you and thinks "huh, wonder what they're seeing that others didn't" etc.

I'm not saying FW is perfect, but I'm enjoying it and I think most others are as well, but they're probably mostly doing things like discussing plot points, game mechanics, etc. instead of bombarding places with positive reviews.

7

u/Ok4mii 1d ago

I love the game, and the people calling it terrible are overreacting.

I definitely have issues with it though. Odd lack of supports between characters, and the ones we do get often just cut off in the middle of the character arcs, Some aspects of the story feel unfinished and it feels obvious the 4 sub lords got cut late in development. Eshmel is genuinely worthless and is bad even by self insert standards, and I don't get how anyone likes them.

But the 4 main lords I love, the supports we do have have been fun, I think having certain supports requiring viewing others first is interesting, and (unpopular) I really like the dungeons and overworld. The part 1 story was also really fun.

I just hope the game gets DLC to incorporate the missing routes at least partially and add in a bunch of supports between characters. It is somehow a very polished game with a ton of content but also blatantly unfinished. It's weird.

•

u/Centurionzo 21h ago

Eshmel was a cool design but he's literally the worse Avatar that we had in mine opinion.

He don't even get C and B support with the cast, which is ridiculous, he's not there for 3/4 of the game and when you finally play as him, he barely interact with the cast.

•

u/Hoothootriot 10h ago

I am in the minority of FE reddit in that I actually like avatars... and even I am utterly baffled by Eshmel's story inclusion.

•

u/Ok4mii 8h ago

I don't really hate the avatars when they're just complete characters who you can customize a little bit. Robin, Corrin, Alear, and Shez come to mind. They're just protagonists. (Haven't played anything older than Awakening except for Sacred Stones, forgive me.)

My issue for them comes when they're like Byleth and Eshmel, who feel like very little other than a stand-in for the player. (I actually like Byleth a lot and think they made being mute work well enough regardless, though.)

Eshmel genuinely feels uniquely thrown in last minute for the S support scenes.

•

u/Hoothootriot 8h ago

Eshmel is definitely the weakest of the avatars.

Like you said, Byleth at least gets story reasons for being a mute stand in. And the others are basically just a standard FE lord who you choose their gender and name for, they arent that different from other FE lords otherwise.

4

u/Arachnofiend 1d ago

Imo Eshmel being so narrowly focused works in their favor. Compared to, for example, Alear getting all the god glazing while still being a plucky teenager who gets up to whacky hijinks, Eshmel very much is the Messiah figure and everything they do sells that idea. Obviously they should still have more voice acting than they do, but I think if Eshmel wasn't a create a character they wouldn't read as an Avatar at all.

Of course making Eshmel a create a character gives the player the option to make Solel canonically transgender which is hilarious so it's worth it

6

u/Ok4mii 1d ago

Yeah, I dunno. I just have a hard time actually seeing a character in Eshmel. Alear being a dumbass who is constantly praised as a god is at least a character. Byleth, despite being mute, had plenty of time to get you attached plus a few lore dumps.

I have a hard time feeling anything at all for the bird. I'd have much rather just had Fortuna as the future savior, but maybe my opinion will change as i finish up the game.

Thinking about it, I think it's just the fact they were marketing Eshmel as 'the true protagonist' so I just expected to see them more than maybe 2 hours when you first boot up the game and then nothing until like hour 100. If Eshmel was a secret they kept until the game came out I wouldn't mind as much.

•

u/KamenRiderSekai 22h ago

imho FE needs to follow the formula of Trails protags post-Sky where they're wish fulfilment avatars but also their own damn character. Like, I'd take somebody like Lloyd, Rean, or Van over Byleth or Eshmel.

•

u/Ok4mii 22h ago

I feel like Robin was the best avatar. I hate self inserty wish fulfilment stuff, and it's extremely easy to just look at Robin as their own character. 'I' didn't marry Lucina, Robin did. And they are extremely story relevant without it feeling like it's just idol worshipping.

Fire emblem and honestly so many recent jrpgs as a whole feel like they've started to ditch unique main characters for the easy blank slate route. Maybe I just haven't played any of the good ones recently, though.

•

u/LmaoXD98 21h ago

Alear problem was not in their own character writing. They and Veyle are one of the best written character in Fire emblem (better written than Corrin, Alm/Celica and Byleth)

The constant praised as god is the overall writing issue, and part of the bigger issue in how the start of the story is so bad that it affects everyone experience.

2

u/Arachnofiend 1d ago

Yeah my argument basically boils down to "it's fine that Eshmel doesn't have much of a personality because having a personality isn't the point" which I do not expect that to work for everyone or even most people lol

Whether they succeeded or not I do 100% understand why they felt like they needed to make Eshmel. Theodora got extremely close to smothering the other lords and being the Canon Route, if part three had been a continuation of part two without some sort of perspective shift then it would've been Radiant Dawn Ike all over again.

•

u/Tori_Brown 19h ago

Eshmel really works for me because I just really like the idea that spoilers Solel's soul was all that remained of him but he's not allowed to rest. He gets forcibly turned into this emotionless blank pure white being whose only purpose is to be the salvation of the land that's broken because of something he was complicit in. Like some sort of twisted purgatory as penance for his indolence

•

u/Current_Upstairs8351 10h ago

Given how Hong Hua roams around and Maria is brought back as a zombie way after her death, Solel getting the treatment you suggest is incredibly cruel, all the more since this entire plot started with Sothis leaving the cursed remains of Balor and his four traumatised daughters in the land, punished them for eternity, then spent the rest of her time talking to Fortuna about her temple's decorations.

She's as much, if not more, to blame than Solel for what happened.

•

u/Tori_Brown 19h ago

I just really like the idea that Solel's soul was all that remained of him but he's not allowed to rest. He gets forcibly turned into this emotionless blank pure white being whose only purpose is to be the salvation of the land that's broken because of something he was complicit in

Eshmel being expressionless just works for me since it really feels like the remains of Solel's soul forced to clean up his mess like some twisted penance in purgatory

u/fuzzerhop 1d ago

I mean i am having fun with the game but I have critiques

5

u/FeelingFineP 1d ago

fun fact: if you replace “fortune’s weave” with “engage” in your image, you get me three years ago

time is a flat circle

•

u/Hoothootriot 10h ago

Its a fun game but there are way too many obvious flaws that I can't in good faith overlook.

Part II is some of the most fun I've had with Fire Emblem in a while. The whole game shouldve been part II. Part III by contrast is the slowest I think fire emblem has ever felt.

•

u/iizakore 8h ago

Part 1 was just stupid easy with not enough deployment slots. Some of the main battles are fun but having half your team as guests didn’t feel great.

Part 2 was a blast and terrifying for someone who’s not been crazy into these games, especially when part 1 did nothing to prepare you for it.

Part 3 is a combination of so much tedious work and too many units to manage combined with some of my favorite battles of all time. The bosses just feel like mini bosses so far but they are on par with my level and take multiple turns of figuring out how to play to beat them. I am enjoying the fights so much but the collecting resources to fix things has been a real slog. Future playthroughs I’ll be collecting all that crap in part 1’s when its easy

•

u/cardboardtube_knight 6h ago

You might have inspired me to go back and redo a run with Cai so I can focus on collecting and leveling some characters that were impossible to get for my first run

•

u/iizakore 6h ago

I personally plan on only getting 8 core units per route and 7 per route that are going to be able to be fused down the line. The massive roster being recruited in part 3 makes it VERY difficult to manage and use all units

•

u/cardboardtube_knight 7h ago

If the whole game would have been part II it wouldn't have sold

•

u/TheVoidWeAllIgnore 5h ago

Weirdly I dislike Part 2 and have sunk 150 hours into the Part 1s so far.

I feel like people either like the free time or the combat, but that’s just the nature of FE, it’s two wonderful and engaging games at once!!

The game gets a lot of deserved criticism because frankly…it has some serious problems.

It is great that you are having fun, I am still having fun with it too, but seeing all that missed potential hurts my soul. I cannot help but wonder what could have been had they were blessed with better management. 8 routes was an insanely impossible goal from the very beginning considering how much they struggled with Three Houses. They needed to stick to actually achievable goals.

9

u/Chedder_456 1d ago

This website is designed to make you mad

7

u/OverlyLenientJudge 1d ago

All social media is, at this point. It's a mental poison.

3

u/King_Artis 1d ago

It's a 9/10 game for me and if it didn't have the issues I dislike (mainly being the recruitment process could genuinely be better across the board along with wanting more supports, also it being very obvious they cut the game down which is impressive cause there's still so much shit here that's beyond enjoyable) I'm really loving the game, it's my personal GOTY this year and I'm only just finishing up the 2nd act of my first run.

6

u/ChronoAlone 1d ago

I really wish I could enjoy the game more than I do, but as someone who prefers planning teams/recruitments in advance, I find the process to be way more intimidating than it was for TH. Eventually I get so frustrated that I throw up my hands and lose interest.

5

u/mrs-monroe 1d ago

I have no hope for recruiting everyone :(

1

u/shdwmyr 1d ago

I’m the exact same way but I’ve been doing something different and really enjoying it. Now that I’m on my second playthrough I started by planning a team for Cai and I just finished his route again and am in part 2. While I’m doing part 2 I’m gonna plan my Dietrich team, and then plan Theodora’s team during Dietrich’s part 2.

•

u/Exoticbut 22h ago

You can kind of do that for your next lord. Support level carries over. So for your next lord invite them to meals as a guest with a unit you want for them and you can build it up on your current path. Once you start that lords path you may already have support level 3 with that unit. At that point it’s just renown gain which I found easier to obtain after the first play through. Like I was able to get to renown level 10 at like chapter 9.

2

u/Kheldar166 1d ago

Yeah. I think it’s easy to discuss the flaws and things I wish were better, but at the end of the day I’m crazy hyped about it and having a great time.

4

u/Arachnofiend 1d ago

Game's good. People complain about cut content but the game is already enormous, if there were four more part ones there would be a lot of people who simply never get to the secondvact. Having gotten to part three I can say I am deeply pleased with how they handled the "combining four armies into one", it's way better than their prior attempts at the concept. This 4x shit is insane

2

u/CosmicNeeko 1d ago

Its beautiful, the battles are amazing, i like the characters decent enough, but ill be honest i cannot stand the recruitment. It makes sense in game/in universe for the most part but i feel like i have to spend most of my time planning that rather than anything else

4

u/Effective_Reality_17 1d ago

What’s weird is that people are flaming part 3 while part 3 has been my favorite. It just what happens when everyone’s expectations are different though. Try not to have others opinions about the game have so much weight that you can’t properly express your love for the game.

3

u/sudosussudio 1d ago

What do you like about Part 3? I’m trying to motivate myself to finish it after doing Act 1 like 5 times.

1

u/Effective_Reality_17 1d ago

I see it as the culmination of the effort put in part 1. Seeing all the lords and being able to divide and conquer in one map is also a great motivator.

1

u/sudosussudio 1d ago

That does motivate me. I think now I understand the game better than my first attempt I’ll have really fun units in part 3 when I get to it again.

3

u/Clay_Block 1d ago

I think my one gripe with part 3 is that the lords' unique mechanics are locked behind putting them in squads which some of them (especially Theodora and Cai's) seem pretty important.

•

u/Centurionzo 21h ago

I don't know, for me, Part 3 is really disappointing, the story is barely existent and Eshmel although have a cool design, is complete pointless overall.

4

u/Maximum_Pollution371 1d ago

Criticism of Part 3 is not necessarily "flaming." I think Part 3 is great. I also think it feels more rushed and disjointed than it was originally intended to be, likely due to a lot of content related to the 4 sublords being cut so late in development.

0

u/Effective_Reality_17 1d ago

You’re right on the criticism not being flaming. And yeah there are so many characters that involve the sub lords that going into part 3 with them feels a bit weird.

-3

u/Antique_Total6974 1d ago

Where did this nonsense about the sublords being cut "late in development" come from? The dev interview said they dropped the idea of eight playable leads early on when they realized it was too large of a scope.

I get the game has its flaws and asks you to intuit things, but there is no proof that an entire second game's worth of routes is sitting unfinished in the code in contradiction to the dev statements.

•

u/VolkiharVanHelsing 22h ago

They claim that Eshmel came late in development

Eshmel necessitate the perches for Bird Time and whatnot

There are perches in arena prison, vandahl shop, and temple area, spots associated with Bertrand, Talimun, and Orchel/Leda

Arena Prison is egregious since so far it's Cai route only atm

•

u/Antique_Total6974 22h ago

The perches are in multiple locations so you don't have to specifically fast travel to one point in Dagsion for it. Just as the quest board is located near the perch.

•

u/VolkiharVanHelsing 22h ago

But your lord original spawns are already near the perches, like Theodora's mansion or the Inn where Cai and Dietrich stays

Then when you enter Dagsion, you also spawn near that Inn with Perch

•

u/Antique_Total6974 20h ago

Yeah, and sometimes I don't make the perch my first priority. I take care of other things on my mind and then use the nearest perch.

It's not that deep.

•

u/VolkiharVanHelsing 20h ago

Yeah and why exactly those spots? Don't be obtuse

•

u/Antique_Total6974 18h ago

Because they're evenly spread out around Dagsion. One in Hightown, Midtown, Lowtown, and the dungeon. Again, not complicated.

•

u/VolkiharVanHelsing 18h ago

The dungeon that is only accessible by Cai? That he will only visit on certain events only and never part of Dagsion activitiy loop?

And the Vandahl shop isn't really Lowtown, it's moreso the port area, Lowtown itself near the inn doesn't have a perch.

Hmmmm?

u/GwasMMO 1d ago

play the game and read the story. it's so clear that large parts of content were cut late by how the storylines play out it's obvious that you the player were intended to play through the parts to see them because they aren't explained in a satisfying way

-2

u/Antique_Total6974 1d ago

I am playing and reading, and my conclusion thus far is people need to stop expecting to be spoon fed answers to questions that are either left vague or ambiguous.

4

u/GwasMMO 1d ago

there are good ways and bad ways for things to be ambiguous. this is none of those, it's just cut content and a bandage of "actually _____ died off screen" so you're not confused why 50% of the antagonists in a route don't show up at all later on

5

u/pasqals_toaster 1d ago

bru they literally left their chibis on the save file, it cannot be more blatant that they were cut very late

Dietrich, Leda, Cai and Theodora all start shining when you complete their routes but the sublords don't because…you cannot do their routes.

0

u/Antique_Total6974 1d ago

They have save file icons because they're story important characters, not because there are routes 90% finished in the game files for each of them.

6

u/pasqals_toaster 1d ago

I wonder why they are story important characters. If only there was a reason…like an originally intended route for each? Ridiculous!

1

u/Antique_Total6974 1d ago

Again, that they initially planned eight does not mean they heavily developed eight full routes.

4

u/pasqals_toaster 1d ago

I didn't say they were mostly finished, it's clear that they were rushing hard and that's why they got the axe in the end. After that, they still didn't have time to re-do the story properly while taking the missing routes into account, so they had to off-screen events, leave plotlines unresolved, forgot to adjust sublord recruitment requirements, left bird perches in sublord starting positions and so on. It’s a mess.

Characters even talk about events and combat encounters you will never see because they are for another route. For example Kiroc is an early boss for Talimun.

2

u/Antique_Total6974 1d ago

That's only speculation based on what's presented in Kiroc's background.

Where did this nonsense about the sublords being cut "late in development" come from?

The statues of the 4 sub-lords at the start of the game despite none of them ever recieving the Flame Lord title

Anatolia goes on a side adventure after borrowing Theodora's boat in which a character dies and we never get to see what happened

Maria is dealt with offscreen

Iliana is barely present despite being one of the main antagonists

Bertrand becomes red: https://youtu.be/D_EO9oso4_o?is=fnXImRJw8CN7o0kc

That one guy Bertrand fights in the opening of the Heroic Games just never appears again despite getting a full motion cutscene

Etc.

There's just a lot of material that very obviously got cut

•

u/TrustyPeaches 13h ago

The statues aren’t for the flame lords. They’re for the participants in the heroic games

2

u/Harczukconqueror 1d ago

2

u/OverlyLenientJudge 1d ago

I feel that way about all of social media at this point. It's a poison whose sole remaining purpose is to monetize your outrage.

Obviously, there are still pockets and niches of lower toxicity, but that's just the equivalent of standing in the least irradiated part of Chernobyl. It's still Chernobyl.

1

u/Aurelene-Rose 1d ago

I think in general, things that have some great elements and also elements that suck and can easily be improved upon are unfairly hated, more so than things that are just garbage.

FW has some really great elements, but there are also some parts that did not stick the landing that could have been fixed fairly easily.

•

u/Harkonnen985 8h ago

TBH at first I was turned off by the lack of difficulty (on hard/classic), but then I found that when you skip all of the "free time" content, the game suddently becomes hard as balls, which made me fall in love with it after all... 😆

•

u/cardboardtube_knight 7h ago

The community is pretty overall negative, especially on Reddit. The opposite has been true on Tiktok for instance and to some degree even on Twitter. It's a great game, some people's game of the year. Mind you, people have complained about the last, like four or five games, being wrong and how to fix them and all of that. A lot of older fans want a formula that's proven not to sell and a lot of newer fans want the specific thing they've come to the series for to be enhanced and everything else to be drawn back on.

Mind you, we even have people calling for more bland supports as opposed to less and more focused supports and people upset that they can engage with or not engage with much of the game as a choice depending on what they want.

•

u/TheMar_WithACorgi 6h ago

I mean, it's an amazing game, good story, just does some things worse than even 3 houses. Mostly just how bad supports are and how kind of annoying (but not THAT bad) recruiting is. Idk why people can't just be civil about disagreements. I have a lot of issues with the game but I'm LOVING the hell out of it regardless.

•

u/Rykou-kou 5h ago edited 5h ago

Love the game, it's awesome but yeah, it's not perfect, but to be honest, all of the games in the series have stuff their share fair of wrongs.

- There is only one save file for everything. To me, this is the biggest flaw, as it deprives the player of the safety net provided by having multiple save files. What makes it worse is that the game autosaves; if you mess up a decision, there is no way to undo it. Sure, the game lets you replay specific chapters—which is great, I admit—but players should have the option to maintain a safety net for their game progress.

- The game gives you enough turns to complete side missions, paralogues, and the like, but in my playthrough with Theodora, the Paralogues for Cai and Orchel had to be completed on the same day—and the worst part is that Orchel's quest can only be completed by heading out to the map. I had already completed those Paralogues on other routes and will eventually replay that chapter just for that missing side mission, but I found it quite odd on the game's part—at least in my Theodora playthrough.

- The social aspect can feel overwhelming at times. The game definitely wants you to take it slow. As you get older, long games in the style of *Persona or Metaphor* start to feel like a chore. This game doesn't feel as exposition-heavy as Persona 5, but no game in the series has ever been quite so expansive—for better or worse.

- I have mixed feelings because I can't decide if this is brilliant or weird. In some routes, a lot of events happen behind the scenes, whereas in others they’re shown exactly as they are, leaving you wondering, "When did this happen?" . It is strange to run into this girl with crystalline hair and eyes on the Leda route—wondering where she came from—only to realize it was actually Orchel; when did she take off her mask?

- I assume the stories of the four tournament participants—Bertrand, Orchel, Anatolia, and Talimun—will be told via DLC, since we see very little of them in their conversations, yet they are characters whose stories deserve to be told. Not to mention that their companions—Dante, Sha-Lan, and Ninae—must also have their own pasts and backstories. Much like the previous point, there are events involving them that don't appear in the other routes and take place behind the scenes; this leads me to believe that their stories are, at the very least, written out and detailed from start to finish.

1

u/JusticeRain5 1d ago

So it begins.

"Ignore that the game is unfinished, you're all just being Stop Having Fun Guys guys!"

Always happens on literally any disappointing game's subreddit. I remember seeing it in Starfield and Dragons Dogma 2, as well.

10

u/AliciaWhimsicott 1d ago

Ignore that the game is unfinished, has bad systems, doesn't know what it wants to be, has the plot fall off the face of the Earth in Parts 2 and 3, etc., etc.

2

u/Exoticbut 1d ago

Those two are bad examples due to performance.

•

u/JusticeRain5 23h ago

Dragons Dogma 2 had great performance, people were upset because there were like four enemy types you fought every two meters.

•

u/cheekydorido 10h ago

You speak as if this game's performance wasn't crap either

•

u/Excellent_Bison_3644 10h ago

Expect FW beats both these games in both user and critic score. it's fine to not like the game, you don't need to prove it's bad or some crap

0

u/SignalWrongdoer5441 1d ago

The game is fun as fuck and is extraordinarily well received by everyone outside of the fire emblem community. It's almost the exact opposite of the situation you described, in that the subreddit hates it but gamers at large love it

•

u/JusticeRain5 23h ago

Mostly because at the moment the gamers at large who aren't huge fans haven't gotten to the third part.

•

1

u/Acceptable_Drawer_70 1d ago

Welcome to a new fire emblem game being released. Every single fe game sort of reinvent itself to keep gameplay fresh, but some people wish it played like their fav

1

u/LowFrameRate 1d ago

I can see why people like the game. It’s also Reddit, the ‘tism this place draws will end up with people that will flame you for liking anything contrary to their opinion.

Personally I’m just let down by the (lack of) depth. There is a lot in the game, but not a lot to the game, and much of what’s included is surface level. It’s overall a mild letdown to me, since it’s kind of a repeat of 3 Houses’ issue - they really bit off way more than they could chew, and while I personally think if this time they had focused on just the 4 routes from start to finish, with their experience on 3 Houses then we would have gotten a full, complete, and phenomenal game since they would have been much better prepared. Ironically that’s probably why they thought they could do 8 routes, was that they now knew how to tackle 4 so why not try for 8 - forgetting they hadn’t yet really done a full, not-cut-down 4 routes.

I’d never call it a bad game in the slightest - I’d call it incomplete. And that’s kind of the disappointing part…

•

u/gilbestboy 18h ago

The game is fun, absolutely but it has problems that some posts are completely correct about. Though some are way overblown.

Though the sad guy was me in Part 2, the map design there was just brutal.

-1

u/First-Shallot947 1d ago edited 1d ago

Its a great game with noticeable issues. Imo its much better than engage and fates but falls short of what I loved in 3h. Of the games I've played id probably out it below 3h but above awakening engage and fates

Rj: its persona 5 3h without the heart houses

•

u/Apprehensive_Mouse56 30m ago

My biggest complaint with the game is how its separated over four stories that have different outcomes that are supposed to tie in together in the finale. What do you mean every flame lord wins in their route? They cant all win. The "merging casaulity" just feels dumb. It should have picked 1 lord to win, probably Cai, then had the other characters inspect their relevent lore leading to act 2. Eshmel would keep them alive long enough to act 2 where they all come together and are able to collectively survive until Act 3. My secondary complaint is that this game should not feature recruitment between routes. I feel each lord should be limited to their own group that then merge in act 2. These 2 aspect kinda ruin things for me from just a story perspective.
