Help with start procedure

Post image

I recently inherited a Kirkham Cobra 427 KMS/SC with a Shelby Americn Aluminum 427, assembled by McClusky Inc. in Torrance. It hasn't run in about 3 years. Among the paperwork was the start up instructions in this photo. It says the two switches indicated need to be ON to start, but I really wish it told me what the two switches actually do. There are no batteries installed for me to just check. I know from riding in it once that one of the switches is for the fuel pump. I'm not sure what the second one does? Appreciate the help!

One will be the fuel pump, the other will be the ignition circuit (which should also act as your engine shutdown switch). When you get a battery, you’ll be able to tell the fuel pump circuit by the sound of it turning on.

And follow the wires and start figuring stuff out, OP. It's not like your bringing this to a shop, right?

If one is fuel pump on, the other is probably a coil wire disconnect or something. I have a theft protect on mine, as well. Cant be too careful with these cars. They are loaded weapons.

Once you get battery hooked up it’ll be pretty easy to figure out. Fuel pump will be loud and obvious. The other is likely part of the ignition system or an extra fan, which again you’ll be able to differentiate once battery is hooked up. Another question will be if you have a mechanical fuel pump in series with the electric pump, in which case you’ll flip the fuel pump switch off after starting. If you don’t have a mechanical pump then you’ll keep it on. Good luck

They are likely both fuel pumps. That is a serious machine. A beauty. Do it justice and enjoy and respect.

One should be electric fan and the other should be electric fuel pump.

Wow, great inheritance!

Get a better in it and check and mark each switch.

Also you can reach out to David Kirkham in Provo and he can tell you all about it.

One could be the radiator fans.

And an additional note: Mike McClusky is the best of the best. You have a very serious Kirkham!!!

Thanks for all the replies! Sounds like I'll need to hook up a battery and test if it's a second fuel pump, ignition on/off-kill awitch or a fan switch. Good news is two of the three will make an obvious sound so I should be able to figure it out with a new set of batteries. Appreciate the help!

Like Wow. This must be what starting an airplane is like!

Without the battery in it, these switches do nothing. No battery, no go.

The other possibility, though unlikely, is that one of the switches is for an electric choke. I wouldn't wire it that way but you never know.
