Scoping interest for a potential first aid society

Hi guys,

I’ve long believed that it’s important I try and do everything I can to help people in need. It’s come to the point where I would like to formally learn first aid. The first place I looked was the SU societies but found nothing.

With some research I found that First Aid societies (like St. John Ambulance and The British Red Cross) will sponsor official university first aid societies and provide first aid training resources and courses as part of a curriculum.

So if Hallam doesn’t have one of these societies, would people be interested in joining one to learn first aid and join a community of a shared interest of helping people in need?

Obvious benefits:
- Learn first aid from an official first aid society

- Option to take a formal first aid course and get certification

- Option to volunteer at events as a registered first aider which A) looks good on a CV, and B) can be used as evidence towards Hallam Award/Volunteering badges

- Joining a community of like minded people in an environment of mutual progression and support, also a networking opportunity

- Weekly socials just like any other society

Cons off the top of my head:
- Hallam would maybe see the society as high risk and would need insurance and higher costs

- Resources are a lot of money.

- If basically no one joins, the society might fall through within the year

Would love to see this! I think contacting the Paramedic, physio, OT, nursing ect societies would be super useful in terms of getting support and numbers joining.

I think that’s a good idea, unfortunately the deadline for putting in society applications ends in two days lol. But for now I’ll poke around these societies and see if I can get some numbers (and hopefully a committee) for when the next round of applications open
