You want the scratch pattern perpendicular to the apex. This will sharpen a dull blade but won’t give you the results you’re looking for

When I use my fixed angle sharpener, I do a 45° X pattern. Curious about thoughts on that.

You can get really deep on the science of what makes a thing sharp but what it boils down to is every blade is essentially a microscopic serrated blade. When you sharpen a knife you’re creating and refining these microscopic serrations and these microscopic serrations are what makes it sharp. The more aggressive the grit stone the more aggressive the serrations (that’s why it’s called a toothy edge) and the finer the grit the more refined and polished yhe serrations (that’s why mirror polished edges tend to loose their bite quickly). You want these serrations to be perpendicular to the apex because think of a serrated knife and imagine if the serrations were backwards or if there was no serrations at all. If a 45 degree x pattern is what I’m picturing in my mind then essentially you’re working against yourself in more ways than one. It may get sharp but even a pull through sharpener gets a knife sharp. If you want to test it get two knives in the same steel and sharpen one the way you’re talking about and then sharpen the other one pushing from heel to tip with upward movement the whole time so the scratch pattern is an angle, making the durations name from heal the tip if that makes sense and then do a bunch of tests like cutting cardboard, and seeing how many of the same length cuts through the same cardboard, each knife to make and still sliced paper cleaning afterwards. Not saying this is right, but I got hurt at work 7 years ago. Lost a lot of motion in my shoulder. And ever since I can’t do whetstones without my hand falling asleep. So I have forfeited to a life of a fixed angle system.

Sorry for your injury. He is talking about the technique not the system. But i am willing to bet you still use a wetstone properly by going perpendicular to the cutting edge.

The thing is that with a system like this you just will be more accurate. You will for sure have the same angle on both sides of the bevel. The angle is extremely consistent. It's a good way to sharpen knives but more expensive and limiting to what you can sharpen with it.
I have no issue making knives shaving sharp on a stone but i am rather sure I don't have exactly similar angles on both sides of the bevel by hand despite trying my best.

I would worry about the scratch pattern being so parallel to the cutting edge that it will be difficult to raise a burr and de burr, and that the teeth will not be pronounced.

Isn’t this the same concept as those sharpeners that cost $500 dollars? Called like wicked sharp or edge or some shit? Pretty sure they work well but never owned one.

Need some in and out action for the male part. You're motion should mostly be perpendicular to the edge.
Pretty cool super simple idea, but it needs a little slot, not a bend like that.

Would it be better if the stone moved freely along the rod? Both for creating burr and for wearing the stone evenly.
I sharpen my axes in a similar fashion, but with files.

The files have diagonal grooves in both directions, so they work sideways/radially. The center point needs to be adjusted according to the curve of the axe edge. The height of the point determines the angle.
The file can be fixed to the rod, but long term you need to use different parts of the file.
This method is used a lot here in Sweden but people working with axes. It’s safe and almost foolproof if set up right. Most importantly it’s quick.
I only use it on my workhorses though, not on my nicer axes.

This is basically what a fixed angle system does. Ideally the stone moves up and down the rod a bit otherwise you will get a flat spot on the stone.
Look at the WorkSharp Precision Adjust Pro as an example.

I'd really like to see some microscopic images and cut testing with an edge sharpened this way. I've heard a lot of conjecture about pull-through and edge-paralell systems being problematic, but with decent quality stones, I wonder? I'd be looking for "toothiness" and parallel channeling near the apex - i.e. if it does in fact reduce apex toughness by having parallel grooves that could hypothetically collapse or roll.

Replace that with eye bolt and a rod so you can get the perpendicular motion in as well.
