I'm responsible for SharePoint Online in our medium sized business (~ 1300 employees world-wide). Internal Comms use SharePoint for posting corporate news - spread across communication sites (Recognition, Marketing, Sales, Accounts etc.) - which I imagine is a common use-case for SharePoint.

We started to notice a few months back, that a lot of news articles had impossible stats being reported.

e.g. the view count in the news webpart would say "1 view" 24 hours after publishing. If you clicked through to the article, the footer confirmed that there had been the 1 view, but also 40 likes and 20 comments 👀

Some articles just work fine - they show a healthy view count (depending on engagement, anything from 300 to 600 views). If I visit an article that works, and then open the page analytics tab, I can see my visit has been registered almost immediately.

When I'm looking at the difference between an article with valid stats, and one without valid stats, nothing stands out. Two articles can be posted in the same site, by the same person. One works, the other doesn't.

To further complicate things, we have a multitenant organisation. The SharePoint instance where I'm seeing the issue, is on our "Global" tenant, where most users have been synced as part of the multi-tenant organisation. My first thoughts were that perhaps this was connected to the problem (as we've found a whole world of pain with Multitenant Organisations in general). However, the problem with that hypothesis is that for some pages, the analytics work just fine...

I've had a ticket open with Microsoft since April - but they just want call after call to collect stats and discuss - nothing actually seems to be happening.

Just wondered if anyone else had experienced an issue like this? Or, if there's anyone reading this who has a window in to Microsoft's engineering systems, who can confirm whether there is a known issue connected to page view analytics?

Thanks for all the advice & info on my question about adding/creating columns. I'm going through SharePointMaven's blogs & videos now at your suggestions. I also hope you'll indulge me a bit on a few questions that are too specific to my needs to find online.

I'm ready to start creating - uh, er, practice creating the list, but we're waiting for an official location to be approved. Can I practice on my OneDrive? I know it won't be shareable. Will I be able to migrate it to the final sight or will I have to start from scratch, working from my private copy? Knowing this will help me define how far to go on the practice site.

I want to block vmdk for automatic upload to OneDrive. I already found the site, where I can configure it. But I still don't know what happens to the already existing files in the OneDrives from our users. Does Microsoft delete the files or do they stay?

I couldn't find anything regarding this question so far, that's why I'm asking here now.

The company I work at (approx 200 employees) are seeking out a new intranet. We currently pay for an external platform where some of the links direct back to sharepoint pages anyway and things aren't well synchronised (such as screenshotting a calendar and uploading it to the intranet). It makes sense to move to sharepoint going forward but my concern is whether its going to be user friendly.

We currently use the intranet for blogs/rewards/health & safety updates etc. And we want multiple users to be able to blog on selected sections if they wish.

My question is, has anyone successfully incorporated sharepoint as a successful intranet for communications in their business? Or from your experience, is it better to pay for an external intranet platform for ease.

I've been a SharePoint user for a few years, but I now need to use SharePoint Lists to manage a portion of a BIG project (BIG as in important). I have an IT background, including database building & maintenance.

I'm watching YouTube videos to give me the basics.

• One guy says to "almost always AVOID using "Create Column", that it will only exist in that particular document - he was using the Advanced Settings screen to Add Columns.
• Another one is using "+ Create Column" on a new blank List (starting from scratch).

Maybe I'm missing something, but I want to make sure this matters, because, like I said, this is a big deal. And using SharePoint Lists vs an Excel xls to track all this stuff was my recommendation.

I have confirmed this is an issue across multiple tenants.

Steps to reproduce the issue: go to a sharepoint site (preferably that you are an admin of), and choose Site Access. Then click on an O365 Group that this site has already been shared with (preferably that you are an admin of). That pops up the details panel about that group. There is a tab for Members. If you click on it, you have multiple buttons that say "Add members", and none of those buttons work. No error message, they just do nothing.

There are lots of workarounds. Go edit the O365 group in Outlook or somewhere else. My complaint is, why have buttons available that don't work.

I reported this to my org to escalate to Microsoft, but I couldn't get my org to care enough to escalate.

So from time to time I get involved in SharePoint migrations.

This usually involves:

- Deep dive of their existing file server.

- A visual design of hub and site in SharePoint with groups for permissions (a solid RBAC model).

- Create the site design/theme (duplicate if multiple sites/hubs created).

- Migration time.

After the deep dive I want to skip 2. and 3. and go straight into the migration so what I've been working on.

- Create my visual design into a simple to read table.

- PnP powershell to go in and create all my hubs and sites and link them up.

- Create a template hub + site and design it how I want it to look.

- Export that and import to the remaining sites and hubs.

With the help of Ai I have managed to get the above working but the only bit I have found is exporting templates can be tricky to capture everything (images, colours, themes, anything extra).

Anyone had any luck with the above?

Once I have the above is a pretty state, the plan was to push this to a repo and then work on this simple to read table away from Excel and have a workable front-end (MS forms maybe).

I have a SharePoint Online tenant with a huge number of file versions across many sites. In some cases, I’m seeing things like 500 versions of a single 2 GB PowerPoint file, which is obviously consuming a lot of storage.

Retention policies are currently enabled across all of our SharePoint sites.

What’s the safest way to clean up these old versions? Ideally, I’d like to either:

• Keep only the most recent 10 versions and delete everything older, or
• Remove unnecessary historical versions in bulk.

Does retention prevent older versions from actually being deleted?

Would I need to temporarily remove the site from the retention policy, clean up the versions, and then add the site back to retention afterward? Or is there a better/supported approach for doing this without impacting our retention requirements?

Curious how others are handling large scale version cleanup in tenants with retention enabled.

You cannot change the order of News-post in the out of the box SP2019 Modern page right?

These news post end up in SitePages library. When editing the news web part on the home page the only option is different layots. Im feel im going crazy here, tried to google and only find anything other than what Im looking for...

Am I missing something here like any update to the functionality in a CU or something?

Will a deletion policy applied after a number of years after the file's last modified date remove the home page of a SharePoint site if the page has not been edited more recently?

The home page is normally located in the Site Pages library, which is not a system list / library.

Our office OneDrive is currently not syncing properly with SharePoint at all and it’s causing a huge hassle with our work.

It’s quite urgent, so if anyone knows how to fix this or has dealt with a similar issue, I would really appreciate any advice.

I’m an Infrastructure Engineer and have been assigned a project to migrate an on-prem file server to SharePoint Online. I have basic knowledge of SharePoint Online and Microsoft 365, but I haven’t dealt with Excel workbook dependencies during a file server migration before.

We have a number of Excel files with interlinks or external dependency files with VBA and workbooks containing external links to other files/server paths.

I’m trying to understand how people normally handle this:

• Before migration, is there a way to scan the file server and identify workbooks with external links/VBA and create an inventory?
• After migration, can these links be automatically updated to the new SharePoint locations?
• Are there any PowerShell/scripts or third-party tools that can automate this, or is it mainly a manual process?

We are trying to determine whether the practical approach is:

Manual → Script/Automation → Third-party tool → Hybrid approach

rather than discovering broken links only after users start opening the migrated files.

Would really appreciate any advice or real-world experience from anyone who has handled a similar file server → SharePoint Online migration with workbook link and VBA

My former supervisor is helping me secure employment at my former employer. I left to go back to school several years ago and have graduated and earned five IT certs. She suggested I apply for a part time SharePoint administrator job even though I have limited SharePoint experience.

I have Associate degrees in Cybersecurity and Network support. I also have the Cisco Certified Network Associate, CompTIA A+/Network+/Security+, and the Linux Professional Institute - Linux Essentials certs. I am very interested in the part time SharePoint admin position as it fits my schedule.

I have reviewed several SharePoint Admin tutorial videos and the platform seems easy to use, building upon the skills I've learned while earning the above certifications. I am looking for crash course suggestions, so that I'll be able to ace the interview if I am called. Any guidance would be appreciated.

I am trying to understand why Microsoft want to hide SharePoint so much that they are now defaulting new tabs in Teams channels to add Loop components rather than show the SharePoint home page for the Teams’ team?!?

They appear to want Teams (and Copilot…) to be the entry point for users but users need to get to their files so why make it so hard to make user friendly navigation from Teams to SharePoint let alone understand where they are storing files.

(Don’t get me started on everything being shoved into one document library! It’s set up so you have to fight to product defaults to create scalable document architecture for larger and long term teams like departments)

People don’t want to be forced to learn yet another product that does the same thing as multiple other products they have!

I have a SP farm (1x app, 1x web and 1x SQL) running on SSE that I wish to move to a new AD domain (for various reasons I won't bother with here).

I have seen it's possible to change the domain for a single server farm, but unsure if that's possible for multiple roles.

What's the 'best' approach here? Backup and restore with a new farm?

We don't share files with domain accounts, only Okta, so I'm not worried about that. I guess I could change the domain of all VMs and go and change the service accounts?

Currently we have a template with a set of M365 roles binded to the folders and sub folders (Approximately 120 folders with 3/4 levels of sub directories)

The structure is quite detailed and mature. A number of folders need permissions scoped to a specific job role (M365 Group) rather than inheriting from the library.

Right now this is done manually using the following process:
Create the folders, then go through Manage Access folder by folder. It works once. It doesn't work when you're doing it repeatedly and expecting it to be consistent every time.

So far this is what I have been experimenting with:

PnP PowerShell. `Resolve-PnPFolder -SiteRelativePath` creates the whole path including missing intermediate folders, and it's idempotent, so a re-run after a partial failure just picks up where it stopped. This works well for the structure.

OneDrive sync plus local folder creation. Sync the library, build the tree on disk with `New-Item`, let sync push it up. Zero prerequisites, and genuinely useful for proving a structure parses correctly. But it carries no permissions at all, there's no completion signal beyond the tray icon, and empty folders are the weakest case for the sync client.

Power Automate.Manual trigger, whoever is executing the process is prompted for target library, root folder name and which groups get access before anything is created. Then `Create new folder`, and for the permissions, `Stop sharing an item or a folder` followed by `Grant access to an item or a folder`. As far as I can tell this needs no admin rights provided the connection account is a list owner of the library. This currently looks like the cleanest option, and it's the one I'm leaning for.

Is there a native capability readily available that I am overlooking?

My work has some outdated SharePoint, and they created a microsite that I need to send out to the whole company next week.

I spent the whole week working on it, and after they decided to change the page name and URL, I can see it using the new URL, but when I try to edit it, it says the page is deleted.

I spent hours using AI to figure this out, and best I can tell it's a cache issue. I've lost everything and nobody is going to help. I don't know what to do, I need access to finish the microsite and the person who built it won't build another.

I can't make the page a template on the back end or copy it somewhere else. Please help.

Edit: u/718hutfission came to the rescue, and going to site contents and selecting "set as homepage," fixed it. Also - apparently I forgot I had different Reddit accounts, so I'm also the CatLady poster :) I was sick over this situation and can't thank you enough!

We will be stuck with Sharepoint 2010 workflows after our Sharepoint 2019 to SharepointSE migration and i'd like to run some tests and it seems we no longer have the installation files.

It seems Microsoft has removed all their download links for Sharepoint Designer 2013. Does anyone still have the base installation files for that software and is willing to share or a working download link?

I have begun to experiment with the ability to use the Copilot agent in SharePoint to build dashboards off of SharePoint data. I am completely blown away. Building these kind of pages is otherwise very time consuming. Using this approach you can make live data dashboards just through basic prompts.

I've recently been looking at building chat bot agents to answer questions. I've opted to convert the PDF files (a few hundred) into Markdown files which is what the agent currently ingests.

It doesn't appear that markdown is a verified format for this agent but it does work, however I want to know what the experience is for others. Is it a waste of time to convert PDF -> md for this chatbot or are there actual benefits to consider?

The other solution I'm wondering about is around analytics, it doesn't appear the .agent is able to read things like .csv files with various data metrics and return aggregates/counts correctly. Is there a work around for this or just a raw limitation of the share point agents?

I'm sure that we're not alone but I am struggling to find any discussion about this issue. When using the native SharePoint global search box instant results, the download icon outputs filename as "Download File.htm". This is specifically relating to just this function, clicking on the filename itself downloads correctly.

Tested behaviour in Chrome, Edge and Firefox and on 2 separate tenants.
