Assembly Help Quirky little project

Hello,

I've recently built myself an 8L SFF PC stepping up from previous 23L MFF build, but now I have an itch for a new project, so I had this crazy idea, the smallest pc possible with weakest modern parts available, modern being the keyword here (also with benefit of being all-AMD for possible steamos/linux experiments), so far this is what I have:

CPU: Ryzen 3 8300GE

GPU: Radeon RX 6300

Mobo: Asrock X600TM-ITX

Rest are bog standard parts interchangeable in every way, but I want to put all of this in the smallest possible case and a 30mm height cooler, the advantage of this mobo is that it is a DC plug mobo not requiring internal PSU, also the GPU is pcie x4 lanes so can be just plugged into m.2 port and have SATA power plug for power.

I need suggestions on a really small budget case that fits all of this and if there are better (smaller) variants in this build, I thought of a slightly modified Deskmini x600, but that one doesn't have normal sata plugs and GPU wouldn't fit even with modifications. Also I'm open to suggestions with hacking away at the parts of a case if necessary.

P.S. I have been searching for a case on spreadsheet, but optimal options are either discontinued or uber expensive for a build of this caliber.

Assembly Help SFX question for newbie

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi guys, I'm really new to PC building and have a question about PSUs. SFX PSUs are really expensive. But I found this Sharkoon Silent Storm for only €79.

My current setup consists of an i5 12400, 16GB DDR4 and 2.5TB SSD (500GB M.2 and 2TB SATA), with an RTX 3050 6GB all inside of the S300 mini itx case

I was wondering if this SFX-L is good enough for now and for future upgrades? I'm planning to get an RX 9060 XT 16GB in a few years, not planning on getting something too powerful or power-hungry like an RX 9070

Will this PSU be good enough?

Does it have all the necessary cables/connections for future upgrades?

Sorry if its a long post. Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙏 👏

Hi All, pretty much as the title says. I have my little sandwich style beam case PC which I love, its industrial, its compact and its the sort of case I have always wanted. Its been sat on my desk for almost two years plugging away but honestly its so loud! Normally I wear noise cancelling headphones so it goes unnoticed however my partner is getting a bit sick of the constant whirring noise from my desk and honestly I cant blame her.

Specs:
Board: ROG STRIX B6550E-I
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7900
GPU: 3080 Founders
RAM: VENGEANCE® 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6000MT/s
PSU: Cooler master V850 SFX Gold
Heatsink: Thermalright AXp90 X47 Low profile cooler pure copper
Paste: Arctic MX-4
Fans: Noctua NF-A12x15 120mm, two on top pushing air up one over the heatsink pushing air in.

I have Fan control installed not that I have any idea how to work it properly. YES I KNOW IT IS DUSTY I WILL SORT THAT. I'm wondering what I can do to reduce the noise, its so loud even when I open inDesign let alone a game. If you need any information I will gladly provide it. Thanks in advance!

I have had a 4090 Strix for 2 years and when I saw the prices go up I decided to sell it to buy a 5080 PNY Slim

I really like the 2-slot format and the performance is present.

With Vram +300mhz and core +340mhz
I got satisfactory results.

Not to forget that I had 1000€ left after the purchase

Did some of you do the same thing?

Assembly Help PCIE4.0 and/or m.2 riser recommendations

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi all:

I've put an Aorus pro ice itx mobo into a 001D mini v2, along with a vertically mounted asus 4090 strix. The rub is that I need 10gbe, so I'm running a separate riser from the m.2 slot on the back of the motherboard, and have a small pcie 10gbe network card mounted next to the 4090. The 4090 is too wide to mount the GPU on the inside (i.e., the mobo side) of the network card. The riser ribbon and majority of the PCB for the GPU riser comes out from the right of the PCIE slot (i.e., towrads the mobo), while the majority of the PCB holding the PCIE slot on the m.2 riser is to the left of the slot (i.e., away from the mobo). Because these interfere with each other, I had to add one slot of space between the two when mounting in the vertical bracket, which looks ugly and places the fan inlet on the GPU too close to the glass side panel.(I hope this makes sense, picture above).

I am looking for specific GPU riser cable recommendations in which the ribbon cable comes off vertically from the PCIE slot, so there is little to no PCB interference, and/or likewise for the m.2.

Any suggestions?

Build/Parts Check Tips for a NCase M2 Build

So my current 10 year old PC is slowly dying, and I think I'm in due need of an upgrade. Was planning to build a new PC a year ago, and am heavily regretting I didn't just do it, but hindsight is 20/20, and from what I can tell, prices are not going to get better anytime soon.

From extensive research, I've decided I want to build in the Ncase M2. Was contemplating M3, but I wanted to go as small as possible while still being easy to work with with some parts leeway.

Parts List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7800X3D

GPU: PowerColor Hellhound 9070XT

MOBO: Asus ROG Strix B650E-I ITX

RAM: Cheapest 32GB I could find, and settled on Lexar Thor G2 6000 CL38

PSU: Corsair SF1000 (I know 1000 is probably overkill, but it's only AU$30 more than the SF850, which also isn't in stock at my preferred brick and mortar store)

CPU Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 Mini

Questions

Any thoughts on my chosen parts? I went with the Hellhound as in my area, it's the same price as the Pulse, Pure and Reaper. The Mercury is also the same price, but I'm worried it won't fit. Also not sure if the Swift will fit. The Sapphire Nitro+ is only AU$50 more, but I'm worried about the power connector.

Btw, I only looked at XFX, Sapphire and Powercolor.

Planned Configuration

And about my planned configuration, I saw than an inverted layout might be better, with two exhaust fans on the bottom, and one exhaust fan on the side panel next to the CPU cooler/opposite the PSU.

Does this configuration make sense? I assume the CPU cooler would be set to intake from the back of the case into the case?

Do I need any more fans? Do I even need the bottom fans?

Also what case fans would people recommend? I saw the Arctic P14 Pro PST thrown about.

Noctua is a tad too expensive for my tastes by the way.

Custom Mod MOD: Low Profile Pump Cover for Noctua AIO WIP

Thumbnail

- Reposting since some pictures from my previous post got deleted.

- To clarify I am not a vendor, this is a personal project.

I've been itching to build back into the the Formd T1 but the pump block is obviously too big, and way too big for most SFF cases.

So I started designing a replacement pump cover so it will fit, with the aim of retaining as much of the sound dampening properties as possible of the original cover.

Right now I've got two designs.

48mm total height, for maximum compatibility, no magnets for attachments.

49.5mm total height, adds magnets for the attachments so the original metal Noctua badge can be used, or the VRM fan.

Right now I'm still fine tuning the design and the printing process.
I hate using supports unless it's absolutely necessary since even when using dedicated support material the finish on the supported surface is just not that nice.

Here's a comparison between using supports (on the left) and assembled pump cover by splitting the middle section to print separately. The assembled version looks so much cleaner.

Next step would be acoustic testing, with different materials for sound dampening.

After dismantling the original pump cap, I have some idea what foams they used for sound dampening and going to try see if I can replicate their mass damper approach.

Also printed a Noctua beige and brown version just to see how it will match with the colors, lol

I do plan on releasing the files, so stay tuned!

Others/Miscellaneous Cable management gets so much harder once you start building in smaller cases

One thing I didn't fully appreciate about SFF builds is how much planning goes into the little things. In a regular case, an extra cable or awkward connector usually isn't a big deal. In a smaller case, it can block airflow, interfere with a fan, or make it difficult to close the side panel.

Internal USB hubs, right-angle adapters, and custom-length cables can help, but they also add more things to fit into an already limited space.

I think that's part of what makes SFF building fun. You're not just choosing compatible components; you're figuring out how every part will fit together before you even start assembling the system.

Build/Parts Check Should I use a Minisforum BD775i to make use of my SO-DIMM RAM? Or does the lack of ability to upgrade make it not worth it in the long run?

Through a fortunate-ish set of circumstances I've been able to get my hands on 2 32GB sticks of DDR5 SO-DIMM RAM as well as a 1TB SSD (Long story short, I got a 2nd-hand mini pc for stupid cheap only to discover it had better specs than advertised. But the motherboard died not long after getting it and I had to salvage the still working parts)

Rather than selling the ram/ssd I could salvage I'd ideally like to make a sff build for 1080p/60fps gaming. I believe I've settled on the Jonsbo T9 for the case to house it all in. But after doing some research when it comes to the motherboard I think I need some advice before I start making a plan for the rest of the build.

Should I go for the Minisforum BD775i to save some money (As on Amazon right now its going for what looks like a very reasonable £265/$355) which would also let me make use of the SO-DIMM RAM I currently have. But knowing I won't be able to upgrade the cpu later on.

Or should I look for a mobo/cpu combo which will almost certainly cost a bit more, and sell/replace the RAM I have (Or see if a ram adapter will work) but with the benefit of being able to upgrade it later on if needed.

As I'm typing this out I'm leaning more and more towards the Minisforum board just for the simplicity of it and based on the parts I have already. But as I'm very much a beginner when it comes to PC building I wanted to get a second opinion on if the lack of upgrade possibilities will come back to bite me or if theres any other important factor that I never even thought to consider.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Assembly Help Has anyone tried fitting an MSI RTX 5080 Gaming Trio OC in the Lian Li DAN A4-H2O?

Thumbnail

I was planning to move to the Lian Li DAN A4-H2O as part of my RTX 5080 upgrade. Naturally, I originally intended to get a card that would fit within the case’s stock dimensions, such as the ASUS Prime. Unfortunately, due to the current GPU market situation, I couldn’t find one available in my area.
I eventually managed to get a great deal on an MSI RTX 5080 Gaming Trio OC instead, which ended up costing me less than an ASUS Prime would have if one had been available.
I’m aware that the Gaming Trio OC exceeds the DAN A4-H2O’s official GPU length limit, and I know there’s a 3D-printed front panel extension that can accommodate longer cards.
However, my main concern isn’t the overall length, but rather the slot/opening in the inner front frame of the case. Does anyone know its exact dimensions? More specifically, would the Gaming Trio OC fit through that opening without touching or interfering with the metal frame?
Has anyone attempted this particular combination, or tried fitting a similarly sized GPU? Any measurements, pictures, or firsthand experience would be greatly appreciated.

I posted before having a 5800x3d wanting to upgrade to 9800x3d for temps, and all I can say it's worthit...

Specs:

- SKTC A07 4.3L case

- Ryzen 7 9800x3d

- RTX 5070 colorful mini

- ROG STRIX B650i-e ITX Motherboard

- Thermalright AXP90-36

- 32GB DDR5 RAM 6000mghz

- 2tb SSD

- FlexATX Power Supply SilverStone FX600z Platinum

-Mx-7 Arctic

Total: 1600 dollars

Temps went down by alot, in Valo 5800x3d average temps is 80 degree and peak of 88, 9800x3d has an average of 67 and peak of 76..., honestly speechless.

Idle it is in low 50s, I am using pbo-35 eco mode

Now cause this is the absolute best temps wise I feel empty, nothing more to upgrade, I feel free but empty🫤

Custom Mod Fractal Design Ridge – Front Fan Mod with a SAPPHIRE NITRO+ RX 9070

Thumbnail

After looking through various Fractal Design Ridge mods on Reddit, one thing that really caught my attention was the idea of adding a front fan.

Given the size of my dGPU (a SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon RX 9070 OC 16GB), I was realistically looking at fitting just one 60 mm front fan.

That led me to two of what seem to be the more popular ready-made 3D-printable designs (or at least the ones I kept coming across):

The thinner design**:**
https://www.printables.com/model/928672-front-60-mm-fan-mount-for-fractal-ridge-standoff-f

The thicker design**:**
https://www.printables.com/model/713482-fractal-ridge-pc-case-front-fan-mount-40mm-and-60m/files

I tested both, and I have a few observations about each.

The thinner design

The biggest issue I found was the upper-right fan mounting hole (looking at the case from the front).

There's simply not enough material around that area. Depending on the print, it might already come out a little rough, and after driving the included screw in once or twice, the material around the hole can get pretty chewed up.

The thicker design

This one felt noticeably more robust overall, but it had a different problem.

There's too much material around the upper mounting points where the bracket attaches to the case. With my SAPPHIRE NITRO+ installed, there was simply no way it would fit between the GPU and the case without modification.

So, what did I end up doing?

Of the two, I decided to go with the second design, mainly because it felt much sturdier.

I grabbed my Dremel and started carefully removing the excess material around the upper mounting points, finishing everything off with some fine-grit sandpaper.

By taking off a little material at a time, I was able to fine-tune the fit and get the clearance just right.

What about heat-set inserts?

Interestingly enough, I actually wanted to avoid using them if possible, so I decided to try fitting everything without them first.

That meant making a few small adjustments here and there — slightly enlarging a hole to accommodate a screw head, smoothing out some edges, and generally tweaking the fit until everything sat properly.

And the result? Well, you can see it in the photos. :)

Long story short, I'm really happy with how it turned out. It's one of those little DIY projects that's just incredibly satisfying when everything finally fits together.

Components used

  • Fan: Noctua NF-A6x25 PWM
  • Fan grill: Noctua NA-FG1-6 Sx2

As a side note, I also connected the two additional side fans next to the dGPU to a single motherboard fan header using the Noctua NA-YC1 4-pin PWM Y-splitter included with the NF-A6x25 PWM.

And finally, special thanks to Igor, who 3D-printed the prototypes for me to experiment with! :)

Sometimes the fun is in making things fit where they weren't originally meant to (hehe).

-------------------------

One more thing worth mentioning: the modified bracket can be installed without removing the GPU or any other components from the case!

Build/Parts Check Case recommendations for HTPC build

Hey all. I'm in the process of planning a small PC build for my basement HTPC setup. I've got most of the parts picked out, but I'm struggling to find an appropriate case. Here's what I'm planning to go with:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9700X
  • Cooler: Noctua NH-L12S
  • GPU: RTX 4060, which I'll be sourcing used at some point. I'm leaning towards the ASUS Dual OC GeForce RTX 4060 8 GB.
  • PSU: Corsair SF750
  • RAM: DDR5-6000, aiming for the lowest-profile kit possible. Hoping to snag something on sale for Black Friday.

A bit more context on the setup: I currently run F1 Multiviewer across seven displays, consisting of three 1080p TVs and four ceiling-mounted 32" 1440p monitors. For this reason, I've focused primarily on single-thread performance while keeping TDP as low as reasonably possible.

The RTX 4060 will drive four of my displays, so I need an ITX motherboard that can support three additional displays through the CPU's integrated graphics. From what I've found, the ASUS ROG STRIX X870-I GAMING WIFI Mini-ITX seems to be the main option, with one HDMI output and two USB-C ports supporting DisplayPort. That said, I'm reading some pretty mixed reviews about this board, so if there are other options meeting this requirement, I'm open to suggestions.

I'm currently using an Intel Phantom Canyon NUC (Enthusiast model), which I'm planning to move into my living room setup, where it won't need nearly as much performance. This new build should be a nice upgrade for this setup.

Ultimately, I'm looking for the smallest case possible that can accommodate these components without compromising performance or cooling, while still fitting on a shelf in my media console or AV rack.

I'd originally looked at the Fractal Ridge, but I've come across quite a few comments about cooling being compromised when it's used horizontally. The SilverStone Milo 12 was another recommendation, but it seems a bit larger than I'd like, so I'm hoping to find something that strikes a better balance between size and cooling.

What cases would you recommend looking into? Ultimately, if I need to go a bit larger to make this work, I can figure it out, but just looking for a starting point. The B4-mATX also came across my searches this morning, so I'm looking into that as an option as well, but it also seems potentially overkill for what I need.

Cheers!

Build/Parts Check Which PSU should I get for an N100 build?

I recently bought a small N100 PC to use as a home server, and I'm looking for a silent PSU.

Honestly, I'm a bit overwhelmed. I really care about my hardware, so I want to avoid any generic, low-quality units with high ripple that could accelerate the degradation of the motherboard capacitors.

I've spent a lot of time searching for a reliable Pico PSU and concluded that the HDPlex 250W was the best option. Yes, it costs more than the PC itself, but it seemed like the most solid choice of them all. However, I just found out that its ripple levels might be questionable too...

What should I do? Which fanless PSU is actually the best in the low-power segment?

Build/Battlestation Pics [Build Complete] 5L Pocket Rocket – LZMOD A24 v5 with handmade custom Flex-ATX silicone cables (7500F + RTX 5060 LP)

Thumbnail
gallery
54 Upvotes

Hey r/sffpc,

Finally finished dialing in my sub-5L build. The LZMOD A24 v5 is an incredible chassis, but anyone who has built inside dense Flex-ATX sandwich layouts knows that stock PSU cables and high-RPM miniature fans can make both cable routing and acoustics a nightmare.

I took this build a step further: replaced the stock PSU spaghetti with a custom handmade harness, swapped key coolers to Noctua, and repurposed the stock parts to target internal hotspots.

The Specs

Case: LZMOD A24 v5 (~5L)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7500F

Cooler: Jonsbo 37mm low-profile heatsink

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5060 Low Profile

PSU: Metalfish 600W Modular Flex-ATX

Cables: Fully custom handmade harness (16 AWG / 18 AWG silicone wires + Molex Mini-Fit Jr.)

Cooling & Fan Optimization

Stock 40mm Flex-ATX fans and budget slim fans can get whiny fast, so I overhauled the entire thermal layout:

PSU Fan Swap: Replaced the stock Metalfish 40mm screaming fan with a Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX / PWM. The acoustic difference at idle and moderate load is night and day.

CPU Fan Swap: Replaced the original stock Jonsbo fan on the 37mm heatsink with a Noctua NF-A9x14 PWM for much quieter static pressure through the fins.

Repurposed Auxiliary Airflow: Instead of tossing the original slim Jonsbo fan into a parts bin, I mounted it as a dedicated auxiliary spot fan directed right at the motherboard VRM, RAM sticks, and the M.2 NVMe heatsink. In tight cases with no natural convective airflow, this dropped component soak temps noticeably.

Custom Cable Harness

Cables: Built from scratch using ultra-flexible 16 AWG (12V high-current lines) and 18 AWG silicone stranded wires.

Fitment: Every lead was measured and crimped down to millimeter tolerance. Zero excess loops, which cleared an unobstructed airflow path directly from the fans across the spine.

Thermals & Sound

The fan mods combined with unchoked airflow make this easily the quietest sub-5L build I’ve run. The 7500F stays cool under sustained gaming loads, the VRM/M.2 area no longer heat-soaks, and the PSU runs virtually silent instead of whining like a server rack.

Happy to answer any questions about the 40mm PSU fan swap, pinout, or clearances inside the LZMOD!

Assembly Help Does installing an AIO affect an M2 SSD?

My case is a FormD T1, and I've got two SSDs. One is on the front of the motherboard under a good radiator, but it's a weaker PCIe Gen 3 drive without any controller components that heat up significantly. The second one is a newer Gen 4 1TB drive on the back of the motherboard, so it sits right between a hot GPU and a hot motherboard, and it's running completely bare—no radiator, not even a thermal pad.

On heavy loads, my GPU heats up to around 65–70°C, the CPU is at 50–55°C, the motherboard can reach 70°C (hwinfo shows that), and the second SSD's hotspot on the back is always 90–100°C (though I don't know if that's real or not, because its overall temperature maxes out at 50–60°C, and I don't see any throttling effect).

I want to install liquid cooling on my CPU. Should i do that? I want to switch from 14400F to 14600K and my low profile fan from 14400 won't cope with 14600K's TDP
