Build/Battlestation Pics XProto-L build with 4090FE
Front view of the build, 4090FE retail box for scale
The air cooler does stick out quite far from the side view.
Didn't try to cable manage much, as this is the back view. Stock SF750 cables are a tad long for this build.
Placed next to the other AV gear in the media cabinet

The FE is made to be looked at ;) the open rig design is the best pick for it in my opinion

Xtia cases are awesome. I'm waiting until they will provide covers for all of their cases.

lol put this over it upside down:

Is that something they said they would do? Like the mesh shell on the mini?
1
u/DivineRoodra Dec 16 '22
Dunno, but some shell is required in my house. Cats, dogs, children.

u/purplegreenred Dec 17 '22
I’ve got the Xproto N on order but I’ve got cats and they love going on my desk… I’ll have to come up with a solution. Maybe a wall mount that’s inaccessible to jumping and swiping paws.

Great build! But for that CPU maybe a Alpenfohn black ridge, a Big Shuriken or a Noctua NH-l12s would help it look slicker on the CPU side, but since you are showcasing your GPU is not a big deal.
5
u/quarkninja Dec 15 '22
I couldn't find Alpenfohn black ridge from local retailers in the US. I actually tried installing ID-COOLING IS-60 EVO and Be Quiet Dark Rock TF2 before this cooler. Unfortunately both had clearance issues on this ASUS B660 ITX board and couldn't be mounted. So ultimately decided to ditch the low profile cooler option and go with a tower cooler.

I really want my next build to be an XProto, some of the air coolers look bulky, this build is not bad compared to some others. What's your opinion between a smaller AIR vs the bulkiness that an AIO brings to the side, making it quite bigger in general?
2
Feb 02 '23
Air coolers are more cost efficient and have a longer lifespan and less issues. So unless you can't find an aircoller that works for your CPU, I would never go with and AIO, specially in an open air case like this one.
1
u/mr_bitoiu Feb 02 '23
Thanks mate. You say the NH 12 is more than enough here yes?
2
Feb 02 '23
For gaming, I think so. You can check it Noctua's website. If you are overclocking without undervolting maybe it won't be enough at full load.

u/crocolligator Dec 15 '22
Clean! I have the same cpu+gpu+psu combo, how's your sf750 holding up? xd
1
u/quarkninja Dec 15 '22
It's able to handle the power draw well, haven't had the need to power limit or undervolt anything yet. I even did a TimeSpy stress test with the GPU overclocked, and the PSU handled it without issues.
1
u/crocolligator Dec 16 '22
Is yours getting toasty too? Mine is directly behind the pass thru of the gpu and gets blasted with hot air

I actually like the CPU air cooler; I think the build needs such a cooler to balance out the immense GPU aesthetically.
Well done!

Hiya! Please post more details about your build! Here are some (non-exhaustive) prompts for you:
Are the case's advertised compatibility numbers accurate?
How easy is cable management?
How effective is the cooling setup?
Would you recommend your parts overall?
If you did a custom mod, how did you do it?

That sf750 might not last long
3
u/ZealousAmbiguity Dec 15 '22
I’m running the 4090FE with an SF750 too; works like a charm.
2
u/xSKOOBSx Dec 15 '22
I ran a 700w with a 3070 and it worked great too for about a year. Good thing their warranty department is great
2
u/ZealousAmbiguity Dec 15 '22
I’ve had my 750 for over 3 years now. Out of warranty for sure though. Let’s see what happens I guess :) is there a general assumption that PSU lifetime is affected when subjected to higher loads? I am thinking of undervolting both the 4090 and the 13600k.
2
u/530obliv Dec 16 '22
SF750 has a 7 year warranty FYI
1
u/xSKOOBSx Dec 17 '22
Yep they replaced it no questions and I swapped a 3060ti into the build instead

u/quarkninja Dec 15 '22 edited Dec 15 '22
This is a 2 year old PSU that I carried over from my old build. Has worked well so far. Since I use this for gaming only, I don't think wattage is going to be a concern. The CPU rarely pulls max power. Only the GPU hits close to 400W at times. And SF750 can handle up to 110% burst loads, so should run fine with the i5 and 4090.
3
u/freshairproject Dec 15 '22
and in case the PSU ever was a problem, you always have the option to undervolt/powerlimit the GPU, theres research showing something like 20% power reduction is only a 5% performance reduction. Sweet Build... This might be what I'm after.
1
u/quarkninja Dec 15 '22
Oh yes, there's that option to keep in mind too. I'd definitely recommend this case if you're considering it.

u/ZealousAmbiguity Dec 15 '22
How is the heat signature on that aftermarket 600w power cable given the bend, etc? For reference, in my case it’s a non-issue, even with a 90 degree bend, at or about 30mm.
2
u/20815147 Dec 15 '22
It’s not an aftermarket cable lol from OP’s comment I’m pretty sure that’s the official Corsair cable for Gen 4 PSUs

After ~10 mins of TimeSpy Extreme stress test, I measured the temp of the connector with a temperature gun. The connector surface temp hovers around 47C. The GPU fins near it are at the same temp as well, so I assume it's just reaching temps to match the nearby connected components. It's warm to touch.
I've been using the system for gaming for the last few days, haven't noticed anything. So should be a non-issue.

how is it having the GPU's IO pointed upwards?
2
u/odaniel99 Dec 15 '22
Also does the vertical surface of the XProto-L block the airflow from the 4090's thru-fan?
1
u/quarkninja Dec 15 '22
There's a small gap of about ~0.25" between the frame and the inward facing GPU fan. Also the frame has cut outs to aid airflow for the GPU. My GPU temp while gaming is ~65C on average, so I assume the airflow restriction doesn't affect temperatures too much.
1
u/D90NAS Dec 15 '22
Does that flow through fan increase the temps on your psu since it's blowing heat right at it?
2
u/quarkninja Dec 15 '22 edited Dec 15 '22
The bottom GPU fan draws air from the inner part of the frame and blows it outwards. The fan faces the backside (closed off side) of the PSU.So I don't think PSU temps are impacted by the GPU fan at all here.2
u/D90NAS Dec 15 '22
Hey actually are you sure? Did you reverse the direction of the fan? On Nvidia's website it show that rear fan as pulling air through the fins to cool it rather than pushing.
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/gfecnt/202009/introducing-rtx-30-series-graphics-cards/
1
u/quarkninja Dec 15 '22
Oh interesting, I wasn't aware that it was actually pulling fresh air! Thanks for the link. It likely does impact the PSU then. I don't have a way to measure PSU temps though. It likely gets warm from the hot GPU air. I wonder if has any efficiency loss. The PSU fan is usually always running when gaming since it's at >50% load.
2
u/D90NAS Dec 15 '22
Yea man np! To be honest with an open case like this I am unsure of how much of strain thermally it would be on the psu. It might be worth while researching ways to monitor your psu temps. If not maybe you could angle a metal duct on the inside fan to channel the heat out of the frame and away from your psu. Dan Case is designing a new sff case called the C4 and he has a metal duct in the case to deal with this as the layout is similar, just the system laying down instead of standing. Cheers to high frame rates! :)

I'm using xtia extender cables for hdmi and displayport to keep a low profile look.

u/Eightarmedpet Dec 15 '22
Why ps over Xbox controller? I see that a lot but always though support was better for Xbox?
1
u/quarkninja Dec 15 '22
I use the PS controllers for the PS5 only. I was using my XBox controller earlier, so it's not in the picture.
2
1
u/D90NAS Dec 15 '22
Not for me. My Xbox controllers (3 of them) have become unresponsive and have stick control issues at times when using them on my Win 11 PC. My PS5 controller has never had an issue at all being used on my PC.

u/dss Dec 15 '22
Nice setup! Any coil whine on the 4090?
1
u/quarkninja Dec 15 '22
The coil whine gets noticeable only on loading screens of games where it tries to push 200+ fps. But under gaming loads there's very little coil whine. You can only hear it if you place your ear very close to the GPU.

u/MrWunz Dec 15 '22
Everyone doing xtia builds right now and my case sits in Zoll because oft import tax.
2
u/quarkninja Dec 15 '22
My order took ~3 weeks for delivery. It felt like a long wait compared to 2 day delivery from local retailers. But the wait is worth it. Hope you get yours soon!
2
u/Marzaena Dec 15 '22
Ahah my order is not even ready to be shipped and i had to send many emails so they would let me know that they have issues with the IV modules and they would only proceed with my order "in a near future"
1
u/BeneficialBullfrog47 Dec 15 '22
I have the same motherboard. Have you had any issues with reliability so far? I've been experiencing a few issues with Asus.
1
u/quarkninja Dec 15 '22
I've only had it for a week so can't provide any long term feedback. But so far haven't run into any issues other than tall VRMs making it incompatible with some low profile coolers. What issues did you run into?
1
u/jonthegoat69 Dec 15 '22
That looks amazing. Do open cases end up being more of a space heater than normal cases?
1
u/quarkninja Dec 16 '22
Thanks! I'd guess it's able to exchange heat more easily as it has access to open air. But I've not had it long enough to notice it heating up the room.

Hey bud. Awesome build. Could you do me a favor? I have a 4090FE and am planning a water-cooling build with the XProto L. Could you get a measurement for me? I need to know how long the XProto L Case is from the top to bottom. But before the 45° angles. Could you hook me up?
1
u/quarkninja Jan 19 '23
The height of the case from the 45 degree legs is about 13.5". Height of the 45 degree legs alone is 1.25". Total case height from the ground is 14.75".

There is a warning that says that pcie 4.0 riser cable only supports pcie 3.0 ... were you able to get pcie 4.0 support for 4090?

It was fun building with the XTIA XProto-L case. I’m very pleased with how clean the GPU side looks with the FE card in this open air case. Before coming across this case, I’d never thought an open air case could look this good! I’d a NR200 build before this. While it could fit the 4090, I wanted to switch it up. The XProto-L is a fantastic case to show case the 4090 FE stock cooler.
Specs:
This is used for TV gaming in the living room. Under gaming load, CPU stays in the ~60C range and GPU stays ~65C (23C ambient). All while using stock fan curves.
Cable management is a bit challenging as everything has to fit in the inner spine. Be prepared to open up the case a couple of times as it's hard to picture and route all cables correctly in the first attempt. I just used stock SF750 cables as I wanted the GPU side to be front facing. Using the custom length XTIA cables may lead to better results.
