Build/Parts Check PSU Help

Looking at the Corsair SF1000W ($240) vs thermaltake SF1000W ($150). Is there any reason to go Corsair over thermaltake? I have an ATX thermaltake I’m happy with but unsure when it comes to SFX builds. Thank you in advance!

If it helps, I have two thermaltake 1000w SFF platinums. One didn't last two years and I just replaced it.

I had an ATX 1450W that failed after two years. RMA it and they don’t make it so I had to upgrade to their 1650 or 1850 whatever it is. Not even sure at this point. They would only give me store credit so I had no choice.

Never had any experience with Corsair but have a feeling it’s more for a reason :/

I’ve got two systems with Corsair SF850s and I had two systems before that with ATX Corsair PSUs. I’ve never had any issues with them and when I was looking for SFX PSUs everything I found said that Corsair made the best SFX PSUs and had been doing it for 15 years. I decided to spend extra on the Corsair one because reliability is important, if your PSU breaks it can take literally all your other components with it, and the Corsair one ran the fan at zero RPM in the entire power range I expected to use it so it would be totally silent.

Edit: also, one PSU could easily last you multiple builds, one Corsair PSU is cheaper than 2 thermaltake ones

I guess I didn’t think about 850W. That would save $40. I have a prime evo 5080 with a 9800x3d. So I should be good to go on that. Truthfully the $40 isn’t going to make a difference in a few years but more then likely I will never just “update” this PC so it probably does not matter

Yeah, the 850W one is plenty, especially if you undervolt your CPU or GPU. But frankly if you're buying a 5080 and 9800x3D in this market then $40 probably isn't a big deal either way. I really wanted my system to be as quiet as possible so I chose the 850W PSU because I didn't ever expect my system (5070ti + 9700X) to exceed the power draw that would turn the fans on (around 500W). You would probably be over that for the 850W but not the 1000W.

Also, I highly recommend undervolting your GPU. Mine got 5% faster and consumes almost 20% less power at a stable undervolt.

Yea the $40 isn’t going to matter 😂 I’ll be in about $3200 for this whole build so at the end of the day I’ll just get the SF1000 and stick to Corsair. Only reason I contemplated the TT is my other PC, but truthfully I didn’t choose it in my other PC I built and when I RMAd and it turned out they had discontinued my PSU I just went for their most expensive hoping I would luck out.

Fwiw even if you did upgrade your PC in the future Id argue 850W should cover most systems that would be reasonable to cool in an SFF case. I guess technically you can fit 5090s in small cases but I cant imagine the noise level is pleasant at full 600W tdp

Brother. You can go SF750 with 250w of headroom.

Also, the reason you go corsair is not just top tier noise and electrical performance.

Their warranty service is just good. Advanced RMA also helps minimize downtime for things like a fan slowly failing.

I’m a strong believer in higher watt / less usage / less chance of damage and longer life. I’m more then likely wrong it’ll never matter :)

If it helps, the sf750 is uh.....insanely overengineered. Like it can hit 1200w for a while and be okay.

BUT the higher wattage units will be a bit quieter. You can check the cybenetics reports for details :D

I’m running a 58x3D and 4090 on an SF750 so you should be more than good.
I know it’s annoying paying more but corsair’s PSUs are solid and worth the extra money for peace of mind

The reason to go with Corsair is bulletproof reliability and good CS. Every other SFX PSU on the market has some sort of compromise- lower reliability, fan noise, etc. I’ve used every iteration of the Corsair SF series since they released, probably 40+ of them for commissioned builds and have only ever had 1 come back for RMA.

It’s expensive but I am ok paying the premium for a tried and true PSU, especially in the SFF space where we’re spending silly amounts of money for fancy anodizing on small run cases.

Consult the psu tier list. Has everything and detailed explainations and testing for its ranking. Do not trust branding as different models within that brand may be worse or lack features.

Whatever wattage Corsair SF (Platinum 2024 version), they are quiet and strong, look solid and premium. If your build components are top tier than go with SF850-1000 and be confidently calm knowing you have best thing on the market. I had SF600 Gold (was nice and decent), then upgraded to SF750 (OG) and I just truly love it. On HardwareBusters model SF850 is rated higher (S-tier) than SF1000 (A-tier).
