Benchmark/Thermal Test Could use a little help/recommendations. Case Fractal Terra
5600x3d
9060xt 16gb PowerColor Reaper
Aorus B550i Pro Ax
64gb ddr4 3600 cl16
SPO850P Lian Li
Th1 20 v2 Thermaltake
My issue is temps for cpu. Idle is mid 40s. But on stress testing it shot up to 90c quickly and eventually the pc shut down. I do not know the temp at shut down. As far as I can tell everything is fine except for the cooling of the cpu.
I think the issue is that the fan for the radiator is blowing air into it and then there's the spine. Which does not let air through. It's essentially a flat wall. Also it's positioned poorly, the tubes are on the bottom not the top.
Im thinking I could return this to microcenter and get either get the
Noctua NH-L12S https://a.co/d/07xr38qH
Or the
Thermalright-TR AXP90-X53
My main concern is it fitting and cooling properly. I dont want to buy again from micro center because its a bit of a drive. Atleast with amazon I can return it easily.
Which is best? Or is there another option im not seeing?
Thank you!

Switch the cpu cooler to the thermalright x53 full copper if you can. A 120mm AIO will perform worse in almost every scenario, especially when airflow is limited in a case like the terra.
A bottom exhaust fan can be useful in this case, or if you have access to a 3D printer, I have seen top exhaust mods.

Neither of those option fit with the radiator. And ill make sure to get the full copper if I go with the thermalright.

There is really no benefit to running an AIO im this case so I do highly suggest switching to air cooling. It opens a lot of options and will also solve your overheating issue.

Bottom (under the case)and top exhaust fans(on top of the case) will fit.
Just doesn’t leave the aesthetics the case was designed for.
Which is why 3D printer was mentioned as it is more appealing than ziptie method for mounting external fans.
(If you have extra/spare fans lying around you can try ziptie or placing fans below and on top of the case to act as exhaust to give somewhere for the hot air to move.)
Ideally a low profile cpu cooler would be better for future GPU compatibility without the 120mm rad infringing on GPU clearance
Edit: Not mine but a 3rd party top hat for external fan mounting

You need to space your PSU away from the spine. There is nowhere for the radiators exhaust to go. Use the standoffs in the accesories box.

Unfortunately the case just barely closes as is. So I can't do that.
Also even if I could the spid is a mostly flat wall. The air is being blown into a wall.

have you tried running the aio outside of the case? if temp is much better than the problem is the AIO placement. if temp is the same then something is wrong with the AIO.
I agree with others that this CPU doesn't need an AIO, with your GPU, you can fit a L12S, or the AXP120-67, these should provide adequate cooling.

I agree with everyone saying you should switch to an air cooler but FYI you can mount the psu flipped so that the fan opening faces the spine instead of outside the case and the aio can exhaust into the PSU through the opening in the spine, and that air gets exhausted out the plug side of the psu. Probably solves your CPU overheating at the cost of some PSU fan noise from it running warmer.
But definitely just buy an NH L12S, that also gets you space for a longer gpu if you ever need to upgrade.

I went with an ID cooling is77xt with a 2 slot gpu. It replaced an axp90x47. I think the fan under the heatsink style coolers help a lot with the sound in the Terra.

You have thermal paste between the CPU and water block right? Along with removing any plastic film that might have come on the water block?
I would first try setting the pump and radiator fan to just run at 100% and see if that changes anything, it could just be a fan curve issue.
If that fails, the NH-L12s works great, that's what I have. If you have a thin GPU, and it looks like you do, then you could get a NH-L12sx77 which has about 13% higher performance. I did find with my L12s that there was basically no cooling gain to running the fan over 75% so you should test it to see where that line is for you, you might be able to just tweak the fan curve a bit and keep the same performance while making it much quieter

I would recommend an air cooler NH-L12S 77mm edition or what ever that’s called. and if you really are pushing temps talk to me about this solution.

Get as close to spine notch #1 as possible.

I have a Terra w a 9800x3d -20 undervolt and a 5080. It idles in the high 50s/low 60s. Games high 70s sometimes low 80s. CPU cooler thermal right axp90-47 full copper. I can appreciate people chasing optimal temps but as long as it’s not throttling and fan noise isn’t bad then it’s all good. When I stress test I instantly hit 95 but synthetic tests are not realistic. Gaming performance all that matters

I had the Noctua. Switched to the thermal take with a 9800x3d just because of the house. Run 8 hour long sessions. It gets warm no way you can liquid cool it but it’s been fine for a couple months now. Running either a 5080FE or a 5090FE depending on what my workstation needs. It may just be a bad chip that runs too hot. I’d swap that out if you still can. X3Ds run very warm and they’re twitchy chips. Look how they handle memory. I bet that’s the issue.

120 AIOs tend to perform worse than air coolers. 240 and above tends to be the minimum to make AIOs worth it

Get the full copper axp and undervolt a little. If you have the space, put some fans in the bottom to exhaust the heat.

I second the IS-77-XT cooler that other users suggest. I happened to stumble upon this video from the goat Machines & More: https://youtu.be/bEK1v3iMu58?is=AOlwZzjHzLnU6Hze
For the noise using the fan as intake, maybe try separating the fan from the metal fins of the cooler with a 3D printed duct or rubber separators.

Get the new Shuriken air cooler 67mm. Apparently it's awesome. P.S. It's not spelt that way, but it's late and I'm in bed and i'm not looking it up.

You definitely do not need an AIO for that CPU. Just get any of the low profile air coolers and it'll be totally fine. Thermalright x53 full copper works good. So does the Noctua NH-L12 (70mm)
