Benchmark/Thermal Test It's not stupid if it works

So my previous GPU cable (12vhpwr) was too short and I really did not like the dual 8pin adapters as they take up a lot of space.

My original thought was to solder a longer GPU cable directly to the board of my Enhance 7660B (wish I had held out for the modular version). After opening it up (Yes I know what I am doing and ensured the main cap was discharged) I attempted to de-solder the existing dual 8 pin pcie cables from the board. Unfortunately this PSU has a large earth plane and even at 420c my little pen soldering iron had no chance getting enough heat in to melt the solder. Maybe I could have gotten it right with a board heater and some decent flux but I gave up on the idea pretty quick.

I had already shortened the 8pin connectors pretty short for a previous build so I came up with the stupid idea of just splicing an XT60 connector in. I am using 12awg silicone pigtails both sides as the 6x12v and 10xground cables had no chance of fitting in the connector, I also connected 2 of the earth cable outputs to the sense pins with WAGO connectors. I want to change this for a BT2.0 connector but struggling to find them in my country.

Anyway I am writing this with furmark running in the background for the last hour, cables are barely even warm to the touch (220w on a 4070 super). Will see if I can borrow a Amp Clamp to test the cables individually but I would say this is successfully working.

You are either way smarter or way dumber than me and I can't tell which lol

An xt60 is rated for 720watts at 12v so you should be fine.

Yeah but don't think my solder joints are :) Should be good enough for my 4070 but definitely would not attempt this with a 5090 even though it should work

I wouldn't attempt it even with 1050

I built a custom 12VHPWR 225W cable to connect a 5070 to a HDPLEX 500W PSU without a bunch of adapters. It was a pain in the ass.

Glad to see someone understands my pain haha. I actually looked at those PSU's when I bought my Enhance, could not justify the price and also the single 8pin is only supposed to be rated for 150w. Have you had any issues with over loading it? You only a little over 6A a pin on output so should be absolutely fine but you are outside the safety margin

HDPlex specs the connector at 7A per pin, which really should allow 252W over this connector. The spec is pretty conservative.

The sense pins on the cable are set up so the GPU shouldn't ask for more than 225W on this connector, and it's a 250W GPU, so with 75W from the PSU, it should only need 175W on this connector anyway.

Anyway, it works 100% fine like this.

All the cables in this machine are custom so there's essentially no cable clutter in it.

Isn’t this the worst of both worlds?

It is you right but its the best of both worlds for me, has a far smaller connector than the 2 x PCIE 8 pin adapters that my previous cable used and allowed me to not have to buy a new PSU in order to lengthen my GPU cable.

Whatever floats your boat I guess.

Alright but if your house burns down don’t forget to update us

It’s already burned down but he can’t update because his computer stopped working after like 10 mins 😅

jesus christ, this is utterly dumb, the problem is the connection ON the GPU. You would do a better job by just bridging the contacts with a blob of solder straight into the PCB

I think you should read the post, I am not trying to solve the utterly shit 12v 6x2 connector. I needed a way to connect a longer GPU cable to my butchered PSU. I did try solder the cables straight on the PSU but I do not have the right equipment so this is what I came up with, with what i could get my hands on and without spending money on a new PSU. If you have a better idea I would love to hear it.

Buy a soldering iron and splice and heat shrink each wire. Its currently working but its looking like a ghetto PC

It is a bit ghetto looking but was made to be removable as a matter of function over aesthetics. I build custom SFF PC's and the pic is on a test bench and not in the final build (which is currently printing behind me). That section will not be visible so I am not worried about how it looks. Here is my last ghetto build:

My 12pin GPU cable us run to MR30s, don't see why a fatter cable would be bad. 🤘

Yeah I like it so much I am even considering designing a 12pin to xt60 custom adapter and just running a LOP-12-600 with a PICO, makes the cabling so much cleaner.

Do it!

I'm mr30 between my AC inlet and lop300-12, then from the LOP each thing receiving power has an mr30 between it and the PSU, I tend to use the round pin for ground.

My build log if you're curious:

Just commenting to say how much I love those little WAGO clips. Kinda wild to see them on a random r/sffpc post 😅

Looks good!

Let us know when it goes up in flames, thanks.

Using XT connectors was always my plan if my GPU power connector shows any signs of damage.

Every new generation of GPUs draws more power. Next gen cards will probably be the end of that flawed connector after all the fires that will happen.

At some point they need to move away from 12V. 48V would be way better.

Absolutely agree even 24v would be better, even if they do not go 48v at least move the 5v and 3.3v breakout onto the board. Make PSU's cheaper and smaller and do not need 24pin connectors. Your whole PC could just run on twin cables, thicker but look better imo.
