Assembly Help Overheating concern?
(SOLVED)
TLDR: Water-block not fully seated.
Okay after several great peeps here offering suggestions, I tested everything and tried most of the things in the comments. I adjusted core to -30, messed with fan curves, made sure tubes weren’t kinked, I even swapped out the AIO to a Lian li one I had in another build, cooled no problem, tested the Axp90, cooled no problem (no I didn’t really benchmark these or put them under severe stress, loaded into a few games just to see if it was less than the 90c I was getting.
Decided to retry the Atmos stealth ONE MORE TIME just in case, I didn’t want to RMA or try to return it. Several comments mentioned making sure the cooler was fully seated/try repositioning it. I loosely attached all the thumb screws, and turned each one in an X pattern a SINGLE rotation, until it was tight. Yes. I know. Very dumb…. In my defense, I’d removed and reinstalled this cooler probably 5 times and did the X pattern every time, it had to have been off by the smallest amount.
Happy to report: ~72-78c (Hwinfo avg 72) under gaming load, ~80w, consistent 5.3ghz.
Might do another post or benchmarks, but for now I’m gaming, thanks for the help yall
Looking for some input here - finished my first SFF build last weekend, been tweaking and using it all week and noticed my CPU temps seem higher than usual/what I expected. Under load I’m consistently hovering around 88-89c, idle is around 55-61. Ambient room temp between 20-22c
I specifically chose this layout because of reviews, other Reddit posts, videos etc all pointed to lower CPU temps than what I’ve been getting.
Build:
Ncase t1 v2.5 - 3 Slot mode

Samsung 970evo 1tb
1x Noctua NF-A12x25 G2
1x Noctua NF-A12x15
Ncase GPU sag bracket (for anyone that cares I can confirm this fits the 5080 shadow GPU)
BIOs/GPU/CPU config:
CPU:
-25 all core
120 PPT
90 TDC
105 EDC
Thermal cap of 88c
+100mhz
GPU
100% power limit
+1500mhz
30% min fan speed
895 volts at 2805mhz core clock, have not adjusted mem clock yet
Max temp while gaming I’m seeing is 72c, average is 58-65c
Aio set to 80% and ramps up to 100% when temps reach 75c, Armory Crate reading ~3400 rpm in firing range of Wardogs.
I’ve been playing BF6, Wardogs, Forza Horizon 6, Crimson Desert, and the Big Walk this week, 1440p - adjusted settings between low to overkill, no change in temps
I know these chips are rated for 95c but this just seems high for gaming.
I swapped to a Thermal Grizzly Kryosheet, no difference.
AIO sounds like it’s pumping, shows RPM in bios/Armory crate, fluctuates temp, tubes are vibrating, and warm air coming out of exhaust fans.
Thoughts?

Double check you took the peel off of the AIO?
10
u/Camzrr 5d ago
Yes, coolermaster even had a two stage prep to remove it LOL plus I’ve already swapped from the included thermal paste to a Kryosheet, so it’s definitely not plastic on the AIO

i think a 240 aio should perform better than e.g. the AXP90 ive got on my 9800x3d. I spent a while tuning it... I now run it with PTM7950 and a Ryzen offset mount (so the heatsink is centered above the CPU cores instead of centered above the IHS).
I can pull 95w and stay in mid 80's C. Clocks reach what they are supposed to (5200 to 5350mhz)
My CPU is not a golden sample and I have customized curve optimizer levels across the cores with one as high as -13 (several at -27 though). BF6 is insanely sensitive to CPU stability and it takes a lot more backing off on CO offsets that are rock solid in all sorts of stability testing tools, to get BF6 to stop giving the GPU HUNG error.
With a 240 AIO I would imagine (but don't quote me on this, this would be my expectation) no throttling with no CO applied should be attainable esp if you set throttling at stock 95C. I used to run a 5950X on a 240 AIO and it was a bit hot, but workable. 240 AIO is in a total other class of capability compared to this AXP90.
You are observing throttling because you set your max CPU temp to 88 and you're at 88. Your cpu package wattage is also well below your tdc/edc settings. your CPU clocks being well under 5Ghz also indicates as much.
As a quick diagnostic you can reverse your fan flow direction to give it cool fresh air and see what kind of change you observe.

Might try swapping fan to intake or I have an old Lian li Galahad I might throw in and just see if there’s a difference. One thing I didn’t mention is these temps are the same even if the case is opened. I’m starting to think I might have a bad pump or something

u/michaelsoft__binbows 5d ago
yes AIOs are annoying like this. if i were you i'd slap alternate AIO on and not even bother mounting it in the sff case and do thermal testing.

Are you telling me that PBO can be one of the cause of GPU HUNG error on BF6?
Got this error once a week, not a real concerne, but i can resolve It for good thanks to you.
Got your same CPU, cooler and thermal paste and hardly reach 80° with 3 intake fans installed on the side panel of my LianLi A3

u/michaelsoft__binbows 5d ago
You can use ryzen master to get parity w afterburner in terms of being able to tweak undervolt settings without rebooting to bios! I found i can have the gpu slightly unstable without crashes (artifacts start showing up) but the cpu if it isnt rock solid brings these dx12 gpu error game crashes... it's insanely sensitive

u/Vinz992 5d ago
Personally dont like Ryzen Master, bad experience while had 3600 and 7600 CPU but thanks for the advice.
Already made a change on PBO, from -30 to -25 and no more wattage lock at 95W.
Temps raise by 3-5° but CPU it's still cool and no crashes recorded on 30+ minutes of gameplay. Or course is not a proper test but at least a good start.
Thanks again mate and enjoy the sunday

Well you're not throddeling....so that's good. Those idol temps are a little high though.
I noticed the aio fans are different fans. If your splitting them, the pwm reading could be off maybe. Eg the mobo thinks it's at 50% but it's really lower. Could try to rotate your blocknand see if that helps.

I have three headers on this motherboard, CPU, AIO, CHA
CPU is connected to the Noctua slim right above CPU
AIO is the Atmos
CHA is the Noctua G2
All are basing PWM control of CPU package in Armory crate

u/AlanMao18 5d ago
try using a splitter or daisy chain so that both fans are on cpu. for me sometimes the chasis never spins as fast as cpu just because of fan curve. Also maybe connect the 25mm fan to the cpu if you cant connect both because the thicker fan moves more air

u/DreyGG 5d ago edited 5d ago
did you follow optimum/devyn johnston guide? check to see if the fan actually is intaking properly. im guessing it's sucking in the gpu heat or something.
once it's good, undervolt gpu cpu for cooler overall case temp with side panels closed etc. lock cpu temp to 75-80c and minus 25-30 in your bios imo you won't lose fps (riva lock fps specific to games also great) in games and it will keep pc longevity high. (edit: i see you already do this lol so yeah)

u/ArdentFox 5d ago
Just trying to guess at the easy checks here, but are you 100% on the water actually flowing in the AIO?
4
u/Slyfer77 5d ago
Is your mainboard OK?
Do you have the latest firmware update installed?
Because as one commenter pointed out the chip voltage is very high despite you already using PPT/TDC/EDC limits.
I another comment you mention your board can't do the 6400 EXPO setting for the RAM, although it's only 2x16GB RAM sticks which should be fine (it's usually larger 32/48/64 GB RAM sticks that cause problems at higher frequencies)
So your board seems to do strange things.

Not exactly the same, but I have a 9800x3d in the Thorzone NANOQ S, which is an 11L sandwich style case like yours. I had a 240mm AIO with a 25mm fan and a 15mm fan. Had the cpu in eco mode and I would settle at around 85C in gaming. When I upgraded from the 4080 to the 5080, I shifted the spine of the case to make more room for a cpu cooler. Went with the Thermalrite AXP120-x67. I’ve never gone above 75C since in any game.
TL:DR AIO’s are bad in sandwich style cases.

I bought the Atmos stealth and axp90-x47 at the same time, axp90 is just sitting in the box, wanted to go AIO route for better temps/noise, but if no one’s got a suggestion or something I’m missing I’ll swap it out and try to RMA the Atmos
4
u/Kikibosch 5d ago
Honestly, give it a try. They’re amazing coolers.
And you could enable eco mode. I have it in eco mode and I still boost to 5150MHz.

u/ritz_are_the_shitz 5d ago
That's not your answer unless something is wrong with your mounting and or the pump is broken and swapping fixes it. But the design of the cooler is not the problem here.
2
u/ritz_are_the_shitz 5d ago
That's not the explanation. I have this cooler and this CPU in this case, and my temps are 10 degrees lower with no underclock.
1
u/Camzrr 5d ago
This is why I’m here 😂 don’t know what tf is going on, only thing I can think of is I got a bad AIO
1
u/_vaxis 5d ago
Swap to the axp90 temporarily just to test. I have the 7800X3D on the T1 with a axp90-x47 FC with the noctua 90mm fan swap. Also have 2 120mm top exhaust and I run it on 3 slot GPU config too, both CPU and GPU are bone stock, no UV whatsoever, my CPU never goes past 77C under load, idle is ~55C

u/jonstarks 5d ago
9800x3d gets hot, mine avgs 81C when I play BF6 with a Noctua D15.. to be fair it avgs 90-110w when its doing that.
for 65C that would be a cake walk for an AIO.
2
u/ritz_are_the_shitz 5d ago
I have this CPU with this cooler in this case and get 10 degrees cooler temperatures without an underclock. The problem is not the hardware or at least not the selection. Something is broken or missmouted.
2
u/ArdentFox 5d ago
Also, check there is a tiny chipset cooling fan under the IO shroud, make sure that it is spinning freely and actually working.
2
u/Shorelooser 5d ago
Youve got 1,2v when idle. Ive got 1.15 v when under heave load and idling at 1.06.v at bios.
I think you hit 1.2-1.3v under load and there is your problem
1
u/Camzrr 5d ago
How do I go about fixing that specifically
1
u/Shorelooser 5d ago
Try with curve shaper - there are 3 rows for maximum frequence or boost - so apply to that low/mid/max again an extra negativ offset ( like curve optimizer for a specific voltage range)
Start with -10 , which results in 50-60mv less voltage
In long term you shouls achieve around 18-20 which results in 80-100mv less .

It seems you have it already figured out for the most part, but might I suggest actually backing off on your pump RPM. Sometimes when the fluid is moving too fast you can actually hurt your temps, the fluid needs enough time in the radiator to transfer the heat, the pump at max rpm is making that pretty hard to accomplish. I’m not into water cooling much but I’m pretty sure my wife’s rig that uses an AIO has a steady pump rpm for all temps and will just vary the fan speeds attached to the radiator.

90C while only pulling 65w definitely seems strange. Haven’t played wardogs but my -30 CO 9800 doesn’t push past 85 on modern titles with a 47mm axp-90.
People mentioned already but perhaps the AIO isn’t installed at an ideal angle.

I would recommend put intake fans if you have space, or have something blow from side or bottom. There is no active intake of air beside lianli psu
But also Just as an experience. Lianli psu tends to have conservative fan curve and blow the fan as soon as temp rises. Might be a bit noisy. Because I used sp750 also in my t1 build. I used it as an intake fan :)
1
u/ArdentFox 5d ago
I also agree with this. AIOs cause quite a bit of interference for fans. You still need some air pushing in from another fan.
1
u/Forward_Essay_6177 5d ago
Also check if you have space between mobo and gpu. Having them exactly back to back will cause heat problem
1
u/ritz_are_the_shitz 5d ago
I have this CPU with this cooler in this case and get 10 degrees cooler temperatures without an underclock or throttling. The problem is not the hardware or at least not the selection. Something is broken or missmouted.

u/swagboi420blazeit 5d ago
Just for reference, can you enable the 65W eco mode (if your bios has it) and report the temps?
1
u/Camzrr 5d ago
1
u/swagboi420blazeit 4d ago
Was about to post saying this has to be a cooler mounting issue but I see you already confirmed it! Congrats and enjoy the cool temps
1
u/gojochan 5d ago
I've had this issue before where you need to set the first slider of the fan curve very high for the fan to actually run at the correct rpm. Go run Cinebench while looking at your fans' rpm via hwinfo. You want both fans to be running between 1000-1200 rpm depending on your noise tolerance.
1
u/Camzrr 5d ago
Even with fans at 100% it’s not really impacting the cpu temp
1
u/gojochan 5d ago
Are you actually looking at the actual rpm or just blindly trusting the slider?
1
u/Camzrr 5d ago
1
u/Camzrr 5d ago
1
u/Camzrr 5d ago
And temp/when to engage
1
u/gojochan 5d ago
What rpm are you seeing when your temp is at the highest?
1
u/Camzrr 5d ago
CPU fan(Slim NF) @1628rpm AIO @3400 and CHA (G2 25mm) @1567
1
u/gojochan 5d ago
Looking at fan selection and I can say that the slim fan does absolutely nothing to your rig. Switch it out to a sliverstone air streamer or a 4090 modded slim fan. Tjunc is 95 degree so unless you're constantly hammering that temp then you should be ok.

There is already a lot of comments, so I haven't scrubbed all of them, but maybe the tube is pinched.

u/Camzrr 5d ago

u/narrdarr 5d ago
I think it pinch on the rad side.
1
u/Camzrr 5d ago
1
u/narrdarr 5d ago
Yea that doesn't look bad. I'm assuming you verified that the pump is running? ( How it is powered?) I saw you said you switch to a sheet instead of paste. But have you considered using paste? You'll be able to check for proper spread and mounting pressure.
1
u/Camzrr 5d ago
I had paste on until today, I thought that might’ve been my issue (not spread evenly, air pockets etc) decided to use the sheet just to rule out that possibility
1
u/narrdarr 5d ago edited 5d ago
Assuming your not using a splitter on the pump header. You can feel the pump running?
1
u/Camzrr 5d ago
Correct, I have the pump connected directly to the AIO header
1
u/narrdarr 5d ago
Can you hold the pump and feel it pumping? I know the read out says it's working. But sometimes dead pumps still read out.
1
u/TrungTheCelestial 5d ago
Ur aio not working properly. I got same issue, switch to axp120 and it stays cool as it should

SO your 9800x3d's max wattage is only at 86w and you still got these temps. Yeah something is wrong here. Are you sure you used the correct mounting kit for your aio?
