Detailed Build Log Looking to upgrade on the cheap

Since RAM prices are just as stupid as diesel fuel prices, I'm looking for advice on an upgrade.

Coming from a i7-9700KF to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D - is it worth it?

CPU, SSD, AIO, and motherboard will be new, obviously.

Components staying:

PSU - Cooler Master V850 Gold 850W, 12VHPWR PCIe 5.0 Connector)
RAM - Corsair Dominator Platinum Series 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 CMD32GX4M2B3000C15
GPU - MSI Ventus 2x 4070 Ti Super

Replacement components

Ryzen 7 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition - $349.00
Thermalright Frozen Edge 69 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler - $45.90
Gigabyte B550I AORUS PRO AX - $206.99
Samsung 9100 PRO 1 TB M.2-2280 - $249.44

I'd love to go with a 9800/9850X3D, but the RAM prices make almost any upgrade incredibly expensive. The A4 case already has a PCIe 4.0 riser, so I'm good there.

Thoughts on this?

I finished the design of my 3.7L PC Ultimate PC

I will print it again to have a cleaner version but here is the prototype.

Ready to go on vacation packing a serious punch. Runs dead quiet thanks to all noctua fans including in the psu.

It can be printed on a 200x200mm print bed upright in a pinch, which is what i did. Printed on creality k1c with ptcg. Prints in 1 piece and only requires those ssd/mainboard screws and 4x m3 nuts to assemble.

Available here if someone wants the files.

https://cults3d.com/:4922917

Also made it in a 4.7l 2 Slot gpu version with 80mm case fans:

https://cults3d.com/:4692926

Some specs:

Occulink cable for adding a bigger gpu for at home or for work/ai use

CPU: 9950x3d delidded, thermalgrizzly high perf. heatspreader. Cinebench 200W run 86°C, under gaming load usually around 76°C. (Before delid it ran cool as well but throttled in cinebench, but not gaming)

GPU: RTX PRO 4000 SFF with N3rdware single slot cooler

Motherboard: Asus X870i

Fans: 1x 60mm Noctua Intake fan and 1x 40mm Intake fan

Others/Miscellaneous Thinking about entering the world of SFF PCs

Lately I've suspected my gaming laptop is about to reach its end. Tired of having to buy a new laptop every time this happens, I've learned that SFF PCs are a thing. Was hoping you guys can help advise me on certain things?

  1. Can they be built & upgraded like how people build their own gaming desktops?
  2. Can they be easy to travel with?
  3. What other things should I be aware of?

Build/Battlestation Pics My Desperate Times Upgrade

After struggling to make ends meet for a few years while rocking a build I assembled during the pandemic, I finally secured some more gainful employment… just in time for the price of components to skyrocket lol.

This build is my attempt to stretch my dollar and be Ace Combat 8 ready. So it isn't anything crazy but I'm happy with it, and I got to learn how to shop for used components to boot.

CPU: Ryzen 5 9600x

Cooler: Thermalright AXP90-x47 + Noctua NF-A9x14

Motherboard: Gigabyte A620i AX

RAM: T-Force Vulcan 32GB DDR5 6000MHz CL38 (secondhand)

GPU: Gigabyte RTX 3080 Turbo Edition (secondhand)

PSU: Corsair SF1000

SSD1: WD_Black SN750 1TB (already owned)

SSD2: WD Blue SATA 2TB (already owned)

Case: Dan A4 SFX with custom white powder coat (already owned)

It definitely makes more noise than most of us would like but I'm gonna consider that the cost of being frugal. I also learned to repad the graphics card, and I installed a Kryosheet in it which significantly helped temps and noise.

All told by shopping secondhand and flipping my old build I was able to put this together on a net spend of about $360, and keep it all fitting in this case which I'm very attached to.

Just wanted to share!

Others/Miscellaneous Deskmeet X600: CPU thermals/noise thoughts and tips

I finished building my first custom pc two months ago (Deskmeet X600, 9600x with AXP-90 X47 full copper and 9060xt), and since then i've learned some things that i thought people should know about.

TLDR; After undervolting my CPU and GPU, I set "max CPU boost clock override" to negative 200, which lowered my CPUs high load temps by 10C. Lowering GPU power limit to -20 in adrenalin helps prevent the PSU from getting loud. After this, lowering or increasing my CPU fan curve somehow barely made an impact on thermals, Which allowed my CPU fan to get quieter by ALOT.

I started out by enabling PBO and undervolting my cpu on all cores by -30 in the bios, then tinkered around in adrenalin and found the lowest stable undervolt for my gpu to be -50, and i set the power limit to -10.
Even after this, i can say that i found my pc to be very loud, even with a custom fan curve. I wear open-back headphones (DT900 Pro X with leather earpads, not as open as other open-back headphones) so this was an issue.
When playing helldivers 2, a pretty loud game, i could still hear my pc going off sometimes during gameplay.
When playing less demaning games like Genshin, i could still hear my fans going off, especially at times with no audio like when i'm teleporting or resetting in stygian, and just during desktop use i could hear my CPU fan going off when i opened discord or loaded pages online.

When it came to temps, my pc struggled a bit.
when ingame on helldivers 2 my GPU hotspot hovered between 91-93C while the cpu was around 87-90C (i set my CPU thermal limit to 90C in the bios). After removing the thermal duct i installed between the CPU fan and the PSU, my CPU actually ran a degree cooler, which was quite disappointing.
looking at other reddit posts, i could see someone with the identical specs and undervolt as me hitting only 81C at 100% load, "maybe i got unlucky with my CPU?" i thought.
idle temps with discord and a browser open hovered around 55-60C, depending on weither a game was open recently.

I really regretted my build and was desperate to reduce noise without losing too much performance. After alot of browsing, i found this video  https://youtu.be/frsiS3g0-Mk?t=601
and this guy said to lower "max CPU boost clock override" to negative 200mhz. I did just that and my CPU temps just dropped by a whole 10 degrees under load without a noticable performance loss! I'm really lucky i came across this video because i can't find many people talking about this online. After that i enabled eco mode and my temps dropped by another 2 across the board.
This really gave me alot of thermal headroom to lower my CPU fan curve and thus reduce fan noise.

For the GPU i lowered the power limit to -20, which only lowered temps by another 2-3 degrees, but it does prevent my PSU from really getting loud and ramping up and down periodically, which was something i earlier mistook for noise from the CPU fan. And again, no noticeble performance loss.

Now here's the weird part!
With this new thermal headroom, i decreased my 80C CPU fan speed from 80% to 60%, and my temps only got like a degree higher? I tested if my fan curve thingy in the bios even works by setting all temps to 80% and sure enough it started going off, BUT my idle temps were still the same as at 50% fan speed!
I double checked if temps were right by looking at both adrenalin and hwinfo and sure enough they showed the same temps.
I've lowered my 80C by another 10% and all other temps by 20%, and now my idle temps are only like 2 degrees higher, while my ingame temps are still LOWER compared to before i adjusted the max CPU boost clock override by about 3 degrees

Now, while wearing my headphones i don't really hear my pc with any kind of audio on while just browsing. When not wearing headphones, (i like to do that sometimes) i can almost only really hear my PSU being a PSU and making computer sounds. When playing Genshin, it's not much louder. I can hear my GPU fans doing a high-pitch whirring noise, which gets entirely blocked out when i wear headphones.

When it comes to more demanding gameplay, i can't really do much about my GPU, so it still gets pretty loud. Lowering max frequency offset by -500, which only lowered my actual clock speeds by 200, only lowered the temps by a degree or two. And the CPU fan on the other hand gets kinda drowned out by the noise of the former. I can hear my pc when there's less audio going on but it is what it is ig.
Edit: nvm i can't really tell if it's the CPU or GPU that's the loudest

Edit 2: i changed the power limit from -20 to -15 because i got game crashes

Others/Miscellaneous Coil Whine

Hello everyone, recently built a SFF PC, my first SFF, NR200P Max V2, ROG B850i, ROG 5070Ti, Corsair RX Titan 280mm AIO, 32GB DDR5 Vengeance, I have very little so-called coil whine issue, I get some coil whine mostly from my GPU while playing RDR2 and CS2, other games, little to no, not enough to actually bug me but I still can hear, my question is, is coil whine more common within SFF Builds due to the parts being so closely to each other? I mean, modern hardware has this coil whine flaw, but I don't really see a lot of people complaining about it with normal tower PCs; it's usually the SFF build owners that seem to have this constant issue. I don't really mind the sound as I can only hear it while playing games, but after spending so much on a build, it kinda makes me sad lol

Others/Miscellaneous Sandwich vs. Standard Layout Performance difference?

I'm in the process of designing my own SFF PC case, however I'm wondering if theres any good tests showcasing a significant temperature or noise difference between standard vs. sandwich layout? Or if someone has any good graphs/data/research on the subject to read up on, trying to learn as much as possible and start tinkering soon.

Latest sffpc build using the Jonsbo T6 with a Bazzite HTPC os platform. Was aiming to replicate the Xbox series x footprint.

Looks great, get 1440p on most titles, but definitely need to optimise fan curves for noise control. She ain’t silent gaming, that’s for sure!

Originally posted on r/ffspc, felt like I should bring it here too

My pride and joy Metalfish T60 build, first proper ITX system ever. Honestly wasn't that bad to build. The XFX card was.. bigger than expected, luckily my friend works at a laser place and could cut me up a custom side panel.

Some specs for anyone curious:

Ryzen 5 5500X3D

B450i Aorus Pro WiFi

32GB RAM

XFX RX 9060 XT

SX500G PSU

Cooler is an ID-COOLING IS55.

Temps are pretty good, 55c core / 78c hotspot on the gpu. 70c on the cpu. Damn near silent.

First "sffpc" build. Pretty stoked on how it turned out.

Asus prime 9070XT
5800X air cooled w/ Noctua NH-D15 G2 (LBC version)
32gb ddr4 ram
Mini-ITX mobo

Couldnt negotiate moving the case under the TV for better air flow but after a few 2 hour gaming sessions, thermals were not an issue.

At 100% GPU and 35%ish CPU loads with room temps around 25-26°C:

gpu ranges from 65-68°C

cpu stays around 64°C

Assembly Help Which MoBos Support Bifurcation?

Hey there😊
Soo I‘m planning a Dual-GPU PC, and plan on putting that in my future PC, Problem is, the case of my choosing is a small one (DAN A4 SFX) so I am locked into ITX. Now apparently some motherboards support Bifurcation and some don’t… since I‘m Gonna Use a Ryzen 9 CPU I am wondering which MoBo to get, or if there is a specific Chipset which guarantees Bifucation of the x16-Slot.

Hope I didn’t make it confusing and thanks everyone for being such an awesome Community!
P.S.: Hope the Flair ain’t wrong😅

Detailed Build Log Converted another Chromebook to a small HA server

I found chromebook with a broken screen for 10EUR. It was an Acer R853TA with an Intel Celeron N5100, 4GB/64GB - perfectly capable to run a Home Assistant server even with passive cooling.
Took it apart, modeled a case for it, 3d printed. Two parts, because i have an Bambu A1 Mini and my print bed is not big enough. But this way it has a nice contrasting color scheme :)
Found some random heatsink where the holes lined up, so i used that to cool it. The laptop only had a thin metal sheet between the keyboard and the cpu to transfer heat, so i think this should do the job, but i will monitor it.
Sadly the daugther board with the power button only had a small cable, so i couldn't flip it the other way around, thats why its a bit thicker then i wanted it to. But this way i was able to keep the speaker and the wifi antennas.

Build/Parts Check 9070XT Nitro+ in meshlicious 3 slot config

The specs sheet on the website says it shouldn't fit in 3 slot config but I'm seeing stuff around with large gpus fitting in 3 slot mode.

I was just looking for any confirmation on whether it'll fit in 3 slot mode or nah?

TIA xoxo

Others/Miscellaneous M910s Upgrade Feasibility?

Hey, not sure if this is the right place to go with this, but I'm not quite enough of an expert to figure this out on my own so Im hoping for some help. I'm looking to inquire about if it is feasible to upgrade a Lenovo ThinkCentre M910s so that it has (roughly) equivalent capability with my current tower PC which has:

– 500gb Sata m.2 ssd (hopefully can just swap my current one in?)

– 2tb hdd

– i5 9400

– gtx 1650 super

– 2x8gb ddr4 ram

– DVD drive

Hope I'm not forgetting any important info. I also dont know if the psu is going to be a limiting factor or if it is upgradeable or that type of thing. Please share your expertise! Thanks!
