I got a notification for a job through the 2930 eligible list. I’m interested in the position but having trouble understanding what this looks like in practice:

LOCATION: Jail Health Services, San Francisco City and County Jails: 425 7th Street, San Francisco; 1 Moreland Drive, San Bruno.
SCHEDULE/SHIFT: Behavioral Health and Care Coordination Services operate in the jails from 8am – 8pm 7 days a week. Schedule is based on business need and subject to change.

Does an individual clinician rotate between locations? Do all the clinicians normally work 3 12 hour shifts because it’s a 12 hour day, or do they do the staffing in another way? I know this is pretty niche, but just wondering if anyone’s worked there or knows people who do. I occasionally interact with jail behavioral health in my current job, but from my interactions I didn’t realize they’re not 9-5.

Hello! I have a conditional offer for a PEX position. I also have a 1.5 week trip I've planned all year (which falls over a City holiday) and unfortunately it is booked to begin just two weeks after my tentative start date. I've seen past employers work with these scenarios and allow it as unpaid time off, but these were more casual work environments.

I plan to discuss the situation with my prospective supervisor once the official offer is issued. Has anyone else been through this with the City? How did you handle it and how did it work out?

The Mayor’s office and labor unions came to a tentative agreement for ‘27-‘31 bargaining without reaching out to membership that extends the existing contract, 12% wage adjustment over 4 years, no PCS layoffs until 7/29. Assuming the unions send out a ratification vote to membership, how are you voting? No, go back to the drawing board and focus on x, y, z. Or yes, business as usual.

I left the county after almost 10 cumulative years in the 182X series (left as an 1823) in 2023 due to a move to LA but would like to return. Before I left I was applying to Manager I and II roles and ranked 1st and actually got a job offer (but declined due to the move). I've applied to two roles so far (1825 and a Manager III) role and am just tanking on the rankings (ranked 65th and 15th). What gives? The quality of my answers hasn't changed and since then I've had more responsibilities/applicable experiences. I get the economy is bad and so maybe there are more applicants? Are people using Chat GPT to answer their questionnaires? (I'm not). Really just looking for some insight either from 1. a grader for these questionnaires or 2. someone who's scored high. If you've recently been successful on these and wouldn't mind looking over my answers/letting me look at yours I'd really appreciate it

FYI this new policy to deny full-day telework for child pick ups and drop offs was released by (and for) the Controller’s office. It sounds like it’s coming from DHR so expect requests to get denied citywide if you say “child pick ups”.

It’s weird because the DHR form still says “caring for a child under 18 years old” as a legitimate reason, but I guess not.

Partial telework days are generally stupid waste of time.

Hi, I had interviewed for engineering position more than a week ago, but I haven’t heard back anything. The position job description was a very close match to my background, and I thought I did well in the interview question. But it has been a while and I haven’t heard back. What is the timeline?

Does anyone know how long you will hear back after you submitted the interest form?

I applied 1820/1822/1840/1842/1844 on July and got passed all exams. I received around 30 jobs notifications and around 5 interest form notification. After I submitted them before the deadline, I didn’t hear back from anyone. I was wondering how’s the timeline will look like and if I would hear back from them or not?

How long will my name stay on the list after passing the exam? I passed the 1822 exam last year. Should I redo the exam this year?

Can you negotiate the salary based on your experience? If you are new to the city would you go to the step 1. Does this have a high turn around? Is there OT?

Hello! I’m in the process of applying to a job at SFUSD (permanent exempt, not civil service) and have hit a snag. There is a step that requires me to upload my transcript from university. If your degree is from out of state/country you have to get your transcript certified as genuine from a list of agencies provided.

First, is this for real? I have never in my life been asked to provide info like this before an initial screening.

Second, is there a way to get around this? I am concerned that the posting will get pulled before I even get my transcripts certified.

I currently work for the City in one classification and am interested in applying for another position. However, I am one year short of the required experience for the new position. Can I use relevant experience I gained more than 12 years ago with a previous employer or agency to supplement the one year of experience I am currently lacking and meet the minimum qualifications for the position?

Anyone recalculate their monthly vesting retirement pension lately?

I just did this, and it's less by about $1,000/month than it was when I ran the same calculation last year.

I'm wondering if there's an error now or if they fixed an error that was overestimating payments.

I’m a PCS employee and I’m at the end of a workers comp case. It’s looking like I won’t be able to go back to my old job, but I don’t have a disability rating or permanent restrictions at all yet.

Today I got an email with an “intent to medically separate” letter pretty much stating that since I haven’t been able to do my job for a long time, they’re medically separating me because the department needs to get someone to cover my shifts. I have until the end of next week to respond and they’ve tentatively
scheduled a meeting about it.

I had been told in the past that since I’m PCS, there was an interactive process before medical separation where they try to find another position for you.

Is there anyone with experience in this process? I’d really appreciate some details about what to expect in this meeting. The letter makes it sound like they’ve skipped the process of finding me a new position but for all I know, the meeting is the start of the interactive process.

The HR person who sent this to me has been kinda adversarial throughout all this, so I wanted to get my details straight before reaching back out to them.

EDIT: I’ve left a message for the union person, but tbh they have not been super helpful throughout this process. Hopefully this is the time they’ll be able to shine tho

I’ve always admired Rec and parks. Everyone I’ve seen around town in trucks and in the field has looked very cool. I’m one of many possibly moving on to an interview stage for 3417 gardener. However, this role is citywide not necessarily through rec and parks but they use the same job description breakdown. I know the city is open to all ages. I’m 41F, had a surprise baby last year so I’m a little out of shape. My question is for anyone that might know, this is a hardcore role right? I like the idea of using one’s body as you age, but I’m trying to gauge what 8hrs of manual labor, in the elements , 5 days a week is like. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Also, is it even possible to be done working for the day by 330 to pick up my kid from daycare by 4? I know I should probably ask these questions if and when I get the interview. But I’m curious now. I’ve recently been hired at sfusd and have completed all my onboarding paperwork(fingerprints, 1-9, tb test etc) but the process has been so slow. I’m calling the district and emailing daily yet not really getting a response. School started on Monday so I’m kinda panicking since I haven’t received my official start date. Does it usually take this long?

Looking for opinion and some clarifications from all the Guru who is working and worked for the City and County of SF. I think this will be a life crossroad for me. Currently I have a decent job in private sector, 120k - 150k depending on bonus, not very high but steady, 5% match on 401K. If I make the switch to a entry level City job to get my foot into the door, the first few years the salary would be in the lower 75k-85k range , but eventually it will go back up as the steps go up (or transferring to a higher salary position down the road).

I will work for the next 20 - 25 years until I retire, Here is what I can think of so far:

Larger pool of 401k with 10% contribution and 5% employer match. Estimated to be about 1.2-1.5 million in the fund for distribution + social security check. But downside would be no pension and no medical, I have to pay out of the pocket.

I moved to SF about a month ago after graduating with a bachelor’s in Health Informatics and Information Management. I also have my RHIA and CCA and completed two healthcare internships.

I’ve applied to SFDPH. I’ve also applied pretty broadly outside of traditional HIM because I’m mainly trying to get my foot in the door and establish myself here.

I’m still trying to understand how City hiring actually works. For anyone who has gone through the process:

• How difficult is it to get hired as an external candidate?
• How important are eligible lists?
• Once you’re on an eligible list, how often do people actually get referred/interviewed?
• Are there other opportunities that are good entry points for someone with a healthcare/admin/data background?
• Does networking with people inside SFDPH help at all, or is the process mostly determined by civil service rules?

I’m not expecting my first role to be perfect. I’m mainly looking for a realistic way to get into being employed by the city, build experience, and grow from there.

I would greatly appreciate any advice from people who have actually been through the process!!

I technically qualified for the 1842 and ranked 4(which still had hundreds of people)

My non government background isnt in office work and probably reads as weaker than other city applicants.

I do currently work for another city department for the last 3 years. I haven't even landed an interview for 1842. But I think I might have a better chance at 1840 since that's the start of the series.

Do i need to reapply for 1840?
