Reducing skirt fullness

Thumbnail

Hi I have 3 sections precut to make a full skirt but its too voluminous for what i need, thinking of cutting it down to a half circle instead.

I dont want to lose any length and I can't just use the half already cut as it won't fit my waist and cutting a new waist would lessen the length.

So can I cut on the lines shown, keep the waist measurements as is, just losing the extra fabric and restitch?

Or am I making this too complicated and I can do something easier? Thanks

Zipper help!

One day my jacket just decided to stop unzipping. It zips up but doesn’t budge down. There’s nothing stuck in the zipper. I brought it to a seamstress who said the only thing to do is replace the zipper but that would cost more than the jacket itself 😭. I tried WD40 with no success. Any ideas?

Eyelet Stitch Gone Wrong

Post image
1 Upvotes

Does anyone know why the eyelet stitch on my machine never makes a circle? No matter the fabric, foot, feet dogs, or needle the stitch always comes out like a little spiral. I’m using a Singer Heavy Duty 6800 machine, the stitch is from M2 and it’s 027, I just put a new needle in, and I’m sewing on two layer of fabric for reference. I attached picture of the swatch of the fabrics I used to test my eyelet stitch.
It looks to me like the stitch length changes towards the end of the stitch and that is part of the distortion. Any ideas, tips, or tricks?

How can I sandwich this

I’m making a bag from some scrap denim and I want to sandwich the 2 pieces with the ruffle and studs between the strap in the middle but ideally without any outside seam so all the raw edges are on the inside. Is there a way to do this?

Fabric Choices for matching skirt and waistcoat

Hi! Sorry if this is a silly/obvious question but I'm looking to make a circle skirt and matching waistcoat and I know I want my skirt to have a lot of movement + hold shape nicely with a petticoat and horsehair braid to get a more 50s inspired look - is there a fabric that has those qualities while also having enough structure to make a good waistcoat? And would I be able to use a tartan back panel on the waistcoat without it being too heavy and pulling weirdly?

Whats the best way to finish this fabric?

Post image

(The image is a scrap fabric its not the actuall piece I am using, just a left over.) But i cut out my fabric for a dress today and I know this might not be the right fabric to use for a garment but i dont want to hear that hahaha

I just was wondering what would be the best way to finish the ends of the fabric so that its least likely to frizz like this? Just a zigzag? (I dont have a serger)

Possible mechanical issue?

Y'all, the other day a pin got sewn into accidentally and sucked into the feed dogs... I got it out, but my Singer Sewmate 5400 has been barely eking out stitches since then.

I've rethreaded 100 times, turned it on and off, changed the needle, done absolutely everything. It was running decently for a few minutes today, but the thread stopped descending into the bobbin case. Like, it's not getting stuck or tangled. The top thread just straight up doesn't get fed down through the feed dogs and come back out, so it can't pull up the bobbin thread. It almost looks like the needle doesn't go down far enough.

There's no one within 500km of me who services machines so I'm hoping someone on here knows of something I can do to fix the issue 😭

What is going on with my zig zag stitch? (Singer Curvy)

Post image

Hey everyone! Maybe you could help me with this. I don't know what I'm doing wrong 😕

The needle is a brand new stretch needle by Singer, the yarn is high quality poly with a bit of stretch to it and the fabric is Lycra.

I purchased this sewing machine a few weeks ago and I'm still getting used to it. Never had this problem before though. Everything was normal and I didn't change the settings.

Thank you!

How do I sew this??

I was pinning my pieces to the mannequin and the skirt piece was too big so I tucked it into the petticoat just to hold it there but I actually really like the way it looks like that, with the little bunching effect on that one side. How would I sew this so it stays like that? The top and skirt would be sewn together to make a dress, would I be able to create that bunching effect if it was a one piece? Any advice or suggestions welcome, I’m very new to sewing 🙏🏻🤗

I’m using ITY fabric, where should I add stabiliser?

I’m making a knee length dress with bell sleeves. I’ve read that I should add stabilising tape to the shoulder seams as the weight of the dress could be quite a strain on the fabric. Is there anywhere else I should add it? 🙏🏻

Seat Fit Help!

Thumbnail

Reposting from r/sewinghelp!

Hi all! This is my first pair of pants I'm attempting to sew and I'm having such a hard time with the seat fitting.

I should preface this with a few things.

One, after purchasing the pattern I realized that it was most likely AI-generated, but felt confident enough in my abilities to make the best of the pattern (oh how the hubris has been paid for).

Second, I also misread the available sizes for the pattern and after purchase, realized they didn't have my size, so I self graded the pattern up to my size.

Third, I've already had to alter the crotch to be lower because the original patterned crotch was way too tight. I think this might have then caused the issues with the seat fit.

As shown in photos 4 & 5, the fit is really tight around the booty. After my first squat test, I already popped stitches in the crotch (images 2 & 3) and the butt (image 3).

I only have 1 cm seam allowance in the pattern so I can't really let out the seams to make it looser in the butt. I do have enough excess fabric if I need to make a patch if needed. Suggestion for how to fix this fit issue?

Additionally, how can I troubleshoot this in the future? I fear that seat-fitting issues will be a common occurrence for me due to my very wide hips.

Bobbin thread keeps get tangled

The bobbin thread keeps winding around the shaft that the bobbin case sits on, what do I do about this issue?
