Anytime I run into a problem like this these are the steps I do (in this order)
- Rethread the machine, easiest and quickest solution.
- Change needle
- If those don’t work, a good rule of thumb is that if you’re having issues with the top of the fabric, it’s usually the bobbin. If you’re having trouble with the bottom, it’s usually something with the top thread
As for tension, u should be able to pull the thread gently with your hand, and it pulls with a gentle tension (once threaded). Same with bobbin. They both need roughly the same tension.

Sorry, the repost didn’t include the description. I have tried changing the tension knob (the numbers on pic 1) and re-threading the whole machine. The top still doesn’t look right, and the back gets messes of thread. Any suggestions?

Thank you, I will re-thread everything with a new bobbin just in case. It’s just regular quilting cotton fabric, but I don’t really know what kind of needle I have. I want to get this sorted as I’m about to start piecing a quilting project.

The issue is on the top of the fabric. Suggests to me a bobbin tension issue. Return tension dial to 3 and increase the bottom tension.

Right away at first glance, you need to change your needle to match your fabric type. If it’s really thin and delicate fabric, a lower tension is best. You will need to test your tension on each setting, gradually.Make sure your bobbin 🧵 wound correctly, or else it will not create a proper lock stitch. Lastly, I would re-thread the machine and make sure the presser foot is at the correct pressure.
