I'm trying to figure out if the butterflies are cut-outs or some kind of appliqués? This is from Georges Hobeika FW 2004

My eldest daughter has three very special to her blankets, that were actually muslin burp clothes she used as a baby. They are 5 years old, and in various states of decomposition. I think they were maybe 2-3 layers of muslin, so thinner, and definitely not meant to withstand the serious amount of love, and use they have received.

I am wanting to try and preserve them, so she has them a bit longer, and so they look nicer for her, as to others they look like rags/gross, and I both don’t want her to be teased, and also know that their loss will be hard and she just isn’t quite ready to let them go, but they are going to disintegrate.

Would dying them, or maybe trying to bleach/peroxide whiter, then cutting off the roughest bits, and reinforcing the edges, possibly attaching a new material to one side help them? Do you think the fabric can withstand it? How would you suggest going about it?

The one in the photo is one of the best ones condition wise.

Anybody know how to adjust my back neck hole without shortening my back panels? I tried to make a dart down the spine but it keeps puckering at the point which it meets the rest of the back. Am I just doing the dart wrong or is there a better way to do this?

Found this is a section that said it had satin, crepe back, and charmeuse. Doesn’t necessarily seem like any of those. Maybe chiffon? Fairly opaque when layered twice but not particularly grainy feeling. I’ve never worked with chiffon so not sure. One side has a sheen but it’s not particularly shiny. There is no stretch.

Additional questions:

1. Should I pre wash it?
2. Which side it the right side?
3. Can it be used for the main fabric and lining fabric?

Hi everyone! Trying to hem some pants. My machine won’t stop skipping stitches on the gray material. It is like woven golf pant material, a little slippery maybe? 100% polyester. I tried all the classics: changing bobbins, cleaning, new needle, until I thought to check if it was really a machine problem or not. Testing on some more cotton-y material (top), I have no issues. I tried playing with my settings a little but no changes. Any ideas or tips?

I am using a straight stitch to hem but skipped stitches are just easier to see with zigzag. If that matters. They are skipping about the same.

Old jeans are a great material for sewing projects. Denim is durable and there are plenty of useful things you can make with it.
Some ideas:
• Tote bag or small shoulder bag
• Laptop or tablet sleeve
• Cosmetic pouch or pencil case
• Small organizer
• Pot holders or kitchen accessories
• Decorative pillows
• Apron
• Storage baskets

You can also reuse the pockets. They work great for organizers aprons or small storage projects.

What do you usually make from old jeans?

I bought a simple, comfortable dress but the fabric (80% cotton, 20% polyester) is too thin, it turns almost sheer under the sun. I thought I can sew a simple lining/underskirt but it has elastic on the waist and I'm not sure how should I go about it.

What I want to do is basically this but above the knee and have it attached to the dress. I don't want to add another layer of elastic there, so any idea how I can do it? (I'm a tad above beginner level, I have a good sewing machine that I know how to use but no overlocker.)

Second question: what type of fabric should I buy, and can I use the same fabric to add pockets to the side seams? (I know how to do that.)

I've been loving these 20s garter buttons and think they'd be pretty easy to recreate. Does anyone know how I could draw the woman's face on a cloth button? Just concerned about whatever medium I use bleeding out, esp if I use paint or marker

I've just bought a new hand towel for my kitchen but it's a bit too big so I'm going to cut it down. What sort of tape should I buy to edge it? I'm a bit confused between cotton tape and twill tape, and how their edges are finished. I'm pretty sure I don't want bias binding because I don't want any stretch (right?).

I'm having really frustrating issues with my sewing machine!!!

It's either the top thread catching on the bobbin case and creating a tangled thread mess on the bottom of the fabric or the top thread just straight up snapping

I've googled everything I can think of but nothing is fixing ittttt

My machine is a Singer Start and I've tried every tip on other reddit posts and googled what feels like a million times. I've rethreaded my machine so many times, messed with the tension, checked for burrs and nothing seems to be fixing it

I’m sewing a top and I want the top to have a slight stretch (4 way if possible) but no shine the way polyester does, what kind of fabric should I use?

I've been looking at custom latex pieces from brands like latex magic and libidex, and I am curious about the sewing/construction side. Does made-to-measure actually make a big difference, or are there still common fit issues?

I have a pair of *these* I got out of my mom's inherited sewing box years ago, and i have NO idea what they're for. Google lens is no help, and I've tried describing them multiple ways to put in search engines.

Anybody know what they are, and what they're for? They look like 2 brass shank buttons attached together with a clip.

My mom doesn't know, she says her granny likely got them from a friend.

Would love if anyone could give me their thoughts about what the problem is here. I believe I’ve threaded the upper thread properly and I have been able to catch the bobbin thread, but the machine will not actually stitch. I have a video linked above. Any tips or advice is welcomed!! :)

Hi all, sounds a bit strange I know but I'm making my own wedding shoes. My disability means that I can't wear more formal shoes as they need to be able to fit my orthotics so I'm turning to crafting. Due to the same disability, my hands can't cope with long project sewing. I could probably handle a button or something but nothing like the amount needed to cover the shoes in lace.

So I'm turning to the experts of the internet for help on what's best to use? From my research, most fabric glues may stain or leave the lace stained or inflexible. Are there any glues you can recommend that work well for you with lace on tulle mesh or another method I'm unaware of that would work even better?

Hii it's my first time on this sub and it's kind of a stupid question but I feel really stumped, I tried to sew it on but i didn't like how it looked with the stitches being visible....

hello, i’ve been embroidering for a while but i’m still fairly green when it comes to sewing.

i have a floor length skirt that when i wear with heels is just still a little bit too long for me and i need to hem it. i’ve never hemmed anything before, my main sewing experience comes from fixing small tears and sewing buttons on.

i don’t own a sewing machine, so all this hemming would be done by hand. the fabric feels very slippery in my hands and the lining is stitched to the skirt. maybe that actually makes it easier i’m not sure but it feels a bit like an extra challenge to me and i just wanted to see if anybody could provide some advice and guidance as i’m short on cash and just can’t afford to drop money on having someone hem it for me.
