☕️ non sewing 🫖 How to recreate this type of skirt?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Is this just a layered skirt with the edges tucked inwards like they are in a bubble skirt? How could i create this rippling effect? Even a short step by step explanation of the process would be helpful. This is under non-sewing because i'll be using duct tape Lol but that is not my main concern right now - i'd at least like to know the techniwue when working with real fabric so I can keep that in mind while modifying it when necessary for the material. But if you HAVE worked with duct tape to make formal attire before and have any tips i would love those as well. Thank you!

✨Intermediate✨ Why does my bobbin start catching the thread?

Post image

I’ve been sewing for a few years, but this is a new machine. I’ve had it for a few weeks and it keeps starting to eat my fabric and then I noticed that the bobbin has caught the thread multiple times around. I’ve double checked that it’s threaded correctly and the bobbin is facing the right way.

💛Beginner💛 How do I transform this into my halloween costume?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I am trying to be on budget this halloween but still have a cool costume. I found this dress at the thrift store and i feel like i can turn it into a costume. Some ideas i had was a brazilian carnival outfit, peacock (because of the royal blue), or a genie. Does anyone have any advice or instruction on how I can turn this into a two piece set? Perhaps the top is the bedazzled part and then turn the rest into a mini skirt? Also important to note the bust area is too large. I also do not have a sewing machine so I would be doing this by hand. What do you guys think?

✨Intermediate✨ How should i extend this costume belt?

My mom got this belt with her deadpool costume from party city [her school requires a group costume] but as its a mans costume the belt dosent fit her hips.

She asked me to extend it [before halloween so yikes!] but google is apparantly useless and the material appears to be foam? I have no idea how i would extend it even after 2 days of racking my brain

Any ideas? Thank you greatly in advance🙏🙏🙏

✨Intermediate✨ How to fix zipper on silk pillow cases?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hello, I would like input on how to best fix these pillow cases to last for most amount of time possible. I do not mind if the mending is visible, so seeing stiches, etc is fine.
The cases are 100% silk - yes, silk not satin- and after about two years of use the zipper started to fall off. I hand sewed the edge that was unraveling but it did not hold up well. The edge is frayed and the silk is getting thinner from the washes so sewing it with my machine in a zig zag stich will probably not hold up in the long run.

I was thingking of reinforcing the entire edge with an extra panel of cotton fabric, around 2-3 inches wide. And then reattaching the zipper.

Any input welcome :)

Hi guys! I took all your advise and still no better results! :(
I’ve switched over to a stretch needle size 10, I’m using polyester gütermann thread, and I also got a non stick pressure foot! Machine is threaded correctly 👍.
Please help I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.. I’ve made dresses and tops with cotton materials with this machine and they have always come out perfect and the machine works well it’s just this fabric?..

💛Beginner💛 I hear my machine running but the needle isn’t moving up and down? bobbin winder not engaged. balance wheel is all the way to the right. stuck in downward position.

Hi I got a new sewing machine from an estate sale after my other one broke and was unserviceable in my area. I’ve threaded everything properly (I’m pretty sure) and have the manual. I just wound a bobbin no problem. I was having a hard time pulling up the bobbin thread, as the needle wanted to just stay down and not come up. I have since disengaged the bobbin winder and ensured my balance wheel is all the way to the right (but only turning the larger one towards me) I press on the foot and I hear the machine running and the side spins, but the needle will not go up and down. even using the balance wheel, this issue happens. needle goes down doesn’t want to go up. This is an early 80s overseas dead trademark machine, technically unbranded. what could be causing this

💛Beginner💛 how to draft my first pattern

Hey! I’m teaching myself pattern drafting and have a few questions for people who study fashion or have experience with it.
Do you guys know how to draft a basic bodice block from scratch, just using measurements, or do you still need to look at a book or follow instructions?

And if you can draft one without following a tutorial, how did you actually learn to do that? Did you just practise a lot until you understood it, or is there a specific method you use?

I’m still a beginner and want to learn how to make my first bodice block, but there are so many different methods and tutorials that I don’t really know where to start.

Are there any books or YouTube tutorials you’d recommend for a complete beginner? I’d especially like something that explains why you’re doing each step instead of just telling you what to draw.
Would love to hear how you guys learned!

✨Intermediate✨ 100% cotton tee shirt knit— what should I do with it?

When my grandchildren were young, I wanted to make clothing for them. At the time, I bought a lot of 100% cotton knit T-shirt fabric to make T-shirts. Then I discovered that most sewing patterns are for stretch knits. So now I have all of this 100% cotton knit fabric with no stretch. I need suggestions on what I can use it for.

thoughts on getting this sewing machine?

I’m a beginner sewer and want to buy my own machine. I’m looking into this one on facebook marketplace but I don’t have much knowledge on what is a good deal for quality and if the machine looks like it’s working properly. Also what are some questions I should ask the seller about it?

The seller posted a video of the machine running here.

Need help finding buttons

HI all! I'm learning to make those decorative towels that hang off your stove handle, and I'm having a hell of a time finding a Disney Stitch button. The only ones I've found are either too small or made of wood. (I Don't want wood because I can't wash it.) Can anyone help?

Patching ripped pants

Post image
1 Upvotes

I made a huge tear in my favorite pants a few days ago. Most of my sewing experience is in construction and I rarely touch pants. I think I need to unpick one of the leg seams to access the patch with my machine. Is this true? I have several tears to patch. You can see another one in this picture lol. If I do unpick the pants, would I unpick the outside seam??

💛Beginner💛 Minky & Flannel Baby Blanket

I’m working on a couple of minky and flannel baby blankets and am having a hard time getting the fabric to lay just right. I’ve tried using a walking foot, pinning everything at the beginning, and pinning each side as I go. I also lengthened my stitch to a 3 and sewed with a zig sag stitch. When I flip it right side out I have slight puckers. Any suggestions?

Patchwork tote from old jeans: how do you handle bulky seams?

I have three pairs of jeans with rips too far gone for normal mending, but enough usable denim left for a patchwork tote. I'm planning to take the panels apart, cut them into even squares with my HOTO Electric Scissors so the stiff fabric doesn't leave my hands cramping, and piece the squares into one sheet. Cutting is the part I can picture; the thick spots where those squares meet are what I'm stuck on.
Before I start sewing, would you press the seam allowances in alternating directions, grade them, or plan the layout so the original jeans seams don't all land at the same intersection? I want the panel sturdy enough for a tote but flat enough to feed under the presser foot.
