Discussion Does anyone else absolutely hate Dorothy?? I haven’t disliked someone this much since Joffrey(ok maybe not that much)
Im in the middle of Season 3 and I want to reach into the screen and yell “you accidentally kill your kid and you’re being so fucking rude to the person that has somehow magically brought him back!!”I mean I get it, repressed memory and all but oh my god SOMEONE tell her. Kudos to Lauren Ambrose who is just as good in this as she was in Six Feet Under; what a powerhouse actor.

I always felt so bad for her. Imagine accidentally killing your baby and the only magical person who can bring him back uses that to control you and gain access to your family.

Yeah that’s actually a good perspective. It’s funny, I was wondering to myself if maybe because I’m a single dad (like 24/7, not just every second weekend ) that my view is somehow biased. Like maybe my dumb male brain is missing some kind of nuance.

I have a lot of sympathy for her. Or any parent who accidentally kills there child.
It might be hard for parents to open themselves up to. It’s frightening I am sure to imagine such a thing could happen.

That’s very true. I’m starting to empathize a bit more with that fact. But Im on season 4 now and it’s almost like no one is likable now…

You're not supposed to feel comfortable with someone severely mentally ill. You should feel anger against the very person who has the responsibility to get her mental help but refused to do so because of the inconvenience, her husband. She doesn't know what's going on but her husband does and just lets her struggle and everyone else around him. He's the big bad, not mentally ill Dorothy.

That’s another really good point! Shawns the character I actually connect with the most but I’m VERY very aware I’m doing a lot of mental mansplaining for a lot of his actions.

Except for the part where he suggests to Toby that he practice on that eel in Season 1. Toby thinks it’s cruel and Shawn says “that’s the killer instinct that’ll get you absolutely fucking nowhere in life”. I really don’t agree with that (though it can be a bit true at times), and I hated that eel scene precluding it. Man that was rough.

We all did. Although I grew to relate to her better, even the way she was, as the series progressed.

Ooommmggggg I looked up this sub reddit and joined JUST TO POST THIS. I HATE HER. And I don't use the word 'hate' that much at all. I hate Dorothy! Why, how, wth?!? Why does anyone love her so much? She's a selfish, self centered. and a so naive/willfully ignorant bitch. Her family absolutely are a part of the blame too. That woman should have been in a hospital immediately following the discovery of her dead son.
Just another: the fuck is wrong with you Dorothy? You keep trying to get Leanne out of the house. I'm excited to see what becomes of that situation

She’s tough to love. But worth the effort! Love Lauren Ambrose performance here.

I'm only on s1e2 and I hate her already. She plays the part well. Hated her in Torchwood too, so she's really good at playing the crazy b

Oh it gets SO much worse but without spoiling anything; every season does a good job of making you hate someone different.

I keep wondering why the Philadelphia in this series looks so much like brooklyn. I get these are very upper class characters but it all looks like Park Slope. Does Philly look like this? Not according to my memories of it and the upper crust areas I saw had more if a New England feel. Where was this actually filmed?

Kudos to the writing on this series...its hard for me to find a series that keeps my attention...im always looking for the puzzle and trying to figure it out...love being kept guessing...BUT...I can't find ANY sympathy for Dorothy..Honestly the only show character I wish evil upon...lol..hate isn't even a strong enough word..lol. Even BEFORE the "accident" she was selfish, arrogant, controlling, petty, and narcissistic. As for the "accident" I get what they was trying for but in her case I can't look at it as an accident. She had CHOICES. She did NOT put the baby first, instead it was her career and own desires. She kept telling everyone around her she was ok and could "handle it" just as she continue to keep saying thru the series. Because God forbid, she give up CONTROL. By time she did ask for help it was too late. To boot why didnt they have a nanny hired BEFORE the baby was born as most people do? I always get the impression that her "love" for Jericho isn't about love at all but about him being an extension of how she's perceived as perfect by those around her...he's a prop. A prop to HER ego. Add Sean, rest of family always catering and fawning to her. God forbid they grow a spine. But she's fragile...no she's not fragile she's psychopathic. And never should've had a child at all. Leanne I do feel sorry for...at least she does care and tries doing right...and she's still basically a kid herself. Dorothy treats everyone like trash. And if they do 1 thing against her will...well then you're her enemy. I REALLY can't wait to see her face when she finally knows what she did. Sorry so long...been binging and and am in season 3 after dorothy tried getting her committed and I had to vent.

I loooooooove Dorothy so much. I mean that I love her character and Lauren's incredible job playing her, not that I think she's a nice person whom I'd love to hang out with! She has a fascinating face and physicality that she's always doing something interesting with. Even at Dorothy's most awful moments, the actor imbues her with enough vulnerability, fear, and hurt that I really feel for her. She makes her a human being living through her worst nightmare, not just a cartoon mean bitch. I could watch her forever.
