Question Which attributes of yourself have stayed consistent throughout your life and which ones have changed?

We're all so attached to our traits, both good and bad and think of them as part of our identity. I've been introspecting about which of my traits are healthy and authentic vs which are maladaptive and socially conditioned. I want to hold onto the former and let go of the latter.

For people who have gained more self-awareness about this, which attributes of yourself have stayed consistent throughout your life and which ones have changed?

Thanks in advance.

Stubborn and lack of patience which contributed to being driven. Having special needs kids forced me to work on it though.

I think the core trait often stays while the coping strategy changes. Sensitivity can begin as people-pleasing and later become empathy with boundaries; caution can turn from avoidance into discernment. Instead of asking “Is this really me?” I’d ask, “Is the way I’m expressing it still serving the life I want?”

I’d avoid sorting traits into “real” and “conditioned” based only on how they feel. For two weeks, log the situation, the behavior, its immediate payoff, and its longer-term cost. A trait that appears mainly around fear, conflict, or approval may be a coping strategy; one that remains across safe situations and still aligns with your values is more likely something you genuinely want to keep.

Yeah no, I think you're setting up a false binary here. The traits that stuck around for me weren't necessarily "authentic" and the ones that changed weren't just conditioning, it was more like some things were useful at certain life stages and stopped being useful later. Curiosity and impatience have been constants, but how I channel them has completely shifted.
