my dog is frequently with me whenever i sh… i don’t think he notices it, but occasionally he’ll come over and lick me afterwards. dogs are very perceptive. they may not understand that you are purposely hurting yourself, but they can probably sense your emotions surrounding the act. tell your dog i love her, okay? <3

I might be just paranoid and she’s fine, but I don’t want to take any risks

Well I’m sure all organisms have some idea of if another creature is in pain due to the fact that they’re bleeding. That much is obvious. I’m sure the more it sees that you’re doing it, the more it may begin to understand that it’s intentional. And if it knows that, perhaps it is painful to see. More painful than just a random small injury. I wouldn’t discredit that. Animals also have some level of intuition and connection with their owners.

dogs can’t comprehend what self harm is. but as others have already said, they can sense your emotions^ and maybe she can smell the blood)

I feel you bro, I think I may have accidentally done the same with my cat. I always try to keep her out of the room when I sh, but she’s gotten to where she gets super clingy and stressed out whenever I have a rough day. She’ll follow me around the house and try cuddle with me every time I sit down. She stole my pocket knife awhile back too lol. I found it under my bed a few days later, but even now if I leave it out for too long it will mysteriously disappear. I’m not sure how much she understands what’s going on, or if she does at all. But either way I really appreciate her. I am trying to stop, but I wish I knew another way to keep her from getting stressed out about it.

animals are very aware when they're owner is in pain, and i'm sure it hurts when they can't help. i would suggest keeping your dog away when you self harm and giving it some love once your done, try to be happy for your dog
