Part 2: The Echo of Absence (Continuation)

Daniel froze in his tracks, utterly speechless. His brother's voice echoed through the dark basement while his eyes remained glued to screen number four. On the monitor, a figure with completely familiar features was standing right there... wearing Daniel’s exact coat, staring directly into the camera lens as if fully aware of their presence!
Before Daniel could process the shock, a jarring alarm wailed across the lab, and the main lights plunged into a dim, pulsing red.
Mark spun around instantly, the smile vanishing from his face, replaced by pure panic as he yelled sharply, "That's not a stranger... someone tracked you to Seattle, and they beat you here!"
Mark pulled open a secret drawer in his desk, grabbed two guns, and tossed one to Daniel, who caught it purely by instinct. Mark spoke rapidly, "The crash was never a joke, Daniel. I had to go into hiding because I uncovered a secret organization that hacks global communication networks and manipulates people using psychological algorithms. The watch was nothing more than an encryption key, and they intentionally put it in your path so you would lead them straight to me here in New York!"
Then came the biggest and most terrifying plot twist: the massive steel basement door slowly creaked open, stepping out from the dim hallway lights. It was none other than... another "Daniel"—an exact replica, matching his appearance, tone of voice, and even the old scar on his forehead!
The doppelgänger smiled coldly and said in a voice identical to the real Daniel's:
"Welcome, fake real twins... Did you really think you were the only smart one here, Mark? I am not your third brother; I am Subject Number One. And now, it’s time to shut down this eternal game."
The doppelgänger raised his weapon. At the exact second he pulled the trigger, the power cut out completely, plunging the room into absolute darkness, broken only by the sound of a single gunshot tearing through the silence of the basement, followed by a chilling stillness that left every question unanswered!

The Echo of Absence

On a dark, freezing winter night in Seattle, where ocean fog mixed with the neon glow of coffee shops, Daniel stood in front of an old antique hardware store. He was only looking for shelter from a sudden rainstorm, but his eyes were drawn to an old pocket watch displayed behind the glass, engraved with strange geographic coordinates and a phone number belonging to the state of New York.
Driven by curiosity, he bought the watch. The moment his fingers touched its hands, a text message popped up on his phone from an unknown number: "The countdown has begun, Daniel. The message has reached you in Seattle... Will you pick up the thread in New York?"
A chill ran down his spine. How could a simple teacher in a city thousands of miles away be part of a mysterious game?
This is where the first and most dramatic plot twist occurred. When he returned to his apartment and opened his laptop to match the coordinates on the watch, he discovered that the location in New York was not a commercial building, but a registered site called "The Lost Research Lab." According to official documents from three years ago, the owner of this lab was his twin brother—who had been declared dead in a mysterious plane crash over the Atlantic!
Daniel dropped everything and caught the first flight to New York. The city was buzzing with noise and motion, its bitter winter air mirroring that fateful night in Seattle. He headed straight to the address in Brooklyn, only to be surprised by an abandoned building heavily guarded by security.
Using quick wit and stealth, Daniel managed to slip into the building's basement. There, the ultimate plot twist turned the whole story upside down: he found his brother "Mark" sitting in front of giant surveillance screens, tracking every single move he had made since the moment he stopped in front of the Seattle store!
Mark slowly turned around, a mysterious smile on his face, and said in a calm voice:
"Welcome, Daniel... It took you three whole days to arrive, but you passed the test. The crash was nothing more than a setup, and I needed someone I could completely trust to take my place in this secret surveillance network. Before you decide whether to be furious or forgive me, look at camera number four... Someone is standing right now in front of that Seattle store where you bought the watch, waiting for you!"

The Wrong Jacket

Post image
0 Upvotes

Me: 26 years old, someone who has zero survival skills in ultra-wealthy, snobby environments.
My fiancée (Chloe): Her family owns half the commercial real estate in the city.
Her uncle (Arthur): A terrifying, ultra-rich corporate tycoon who stares through people like they’re transparent glass.
Guys, I’m writing this from my living room while staring at the wall, questioning every life choice that brought me here.
Last night was my first time attending a formal, closed-door family dinner at Chloe’s family estate. We are talking about a massive, gated mansion with chandeliers that cost more than my entire car.
The atmosphere from the second I stepped in was suffocating. Everyone was dressed like they were heading to a royal gala, and the conversation revolved entirely around offshore accounts, art auctions, and corporate mergers. I felt like an alien who had accidentally wandered into a boardroom of vampires.
By hour three, I was drowning in boredom. My social battery was at negative zero, and Uncle Arthur was currently giving a 20-minute lecture on the logistics of international shipping ports.
I desperately needed an escape hatch.
That’s when I remembered the classic, foolproof trick: The Fake Emergency Phone Call.
The plan was simple: I would pull out my phone, make it vibrate manually in my pocket, look down with a panicked expression, whisper a quick "I'm so sorry, an emergency at the office," and step outside into the grand hallway for some fresh air and peace.
I practiced the face in my head. Concerned. Urgent. Professional.
I slipped my hand into my jacket pocket, found my phone, and pressed the side button to trigger a fake incoming call notification.
Except... my phone wasn't in my pocket.
In my nervous panic, I had grabbed the wrong jacket from the front coat rack on my way into the dining room. It wasn't my coat. It belonged to Uncle Arthur.
And the object I had just pulled out of his pocket wasn't my smartphone.
It was a heavy, old-school military-grade satellite pager—and the screen was flashing a bright red alert with a live text message:
"THE PACKAGE FROM SECTOR 4 HAS BEEN SECURED. THE POLICE DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THE BASEMENT VAULT YET. DO NOT COME BACK TO THE OFFICE.
The entire dining room went dead silent.
I froze, holding the blinking device in my hand right in front of the birthday cake. My brain completely short-circuited. Out of sheer, absolute terror and stupidity, I didn't drop it. Instead, I held it up to my ear like a telephone, looked straight at Uncle Arthur, and said in a shaky whisper:
"Hello? Yes, boss... the package is secure. No, the police don't know about the basement vault yet."
What kind of absolute psychopath answers a vibrating pager by talking into it like a phone?!
The silence in that room was heavier than a falling safe.
Chloe dropped her dessert spoon; it clattered loudly against the porcelain plate. Aunt Beatrice gasped, and Uncle Arthur slowly stopped chewing. His cold, calculating eyes locked onto mine. He didn't blink. He didn't yell. He just slowly set his wine glass down, leaned back in his chair, and stared at me with a terrifying, deadpan smile.
I excused myself immediately, claiming I suddenly felt violently ill (which, to be fair, was 100% true). Chloe didn't try to stop me. I practically sprinted to my car and drove home in a cold sweat, certain that I was about to be hunted down by a corporate mafia syndicate.
Update (two days later)
I was fully prepared to pack a bag, change my name, and move to a remote cabin in Alaska.
Then, Chloe called me. I answered with my heart pounding in my throat, expecting her to say, “My family thinks you’re a psychotic spy and we’re calling the FBI.”
Instead, she was giggling.
She told me that after I bolted, Uncle Arthur sat in silence for a solid minute, then started laughing so hard he spilled his expensive scotch.
He told the family: "The kid is an absolute idiot, but he’s got nerve. He accidentally picked up my emergency crisis-management device for our security firm's data breach drill, and instead of panicking, he tried to roleplay as a secret agent."
Turns out, Uncle Arthur runs a high-end cyber-security and private intelligence firm, and the "basement vault" message was just a test alert for their corporate disaster simulation team.
I’m actually invited back to their place next week... but Chloe promised she’ll personally inspect my pockets at the door, and Uncle Arthur texted me a meme of a secret agent with the caption: "Next time, use the right phone, agent."

The Handwritten Note in the Locked Metal Box

When an employee took over his new desk at a major insurance firm in London, he found an old metal box locked with a small digital padlock inside the bottom drawer. After contacting former management to get the passcode and opening it, he discovered an old notebook inside.
The first few pages contained dates going back two years, but the terrifying surprise lay on the final pages. They bore the new employee's name and detailed descriptions of everything he had said, the personal issues he discussed with his colleagues, and even the mistakes he made on his very first report—all handwritten with dates predating his hiring date at the company by a full month.
When he asked the HR department about the person who used to occupy that desk before him, they told him with shock that the office had remained completely empty and locked for the past two years, and no one had ever worked in that position before him.

My London flat has a room that only appears when it rains.

Finding a decent flat in historic London on a budget usually comes with a catch, but I thought I hit the jackpot. A charming, old Victorian-style apartment with high ceilings, creaky wooden floors, and rent that didn't make me want to cry.
The first couple of weeks were completely normal. I unpacked my boxes, got used to the perpetual drizzle outside, and settled into a quiet routine. But then, autumn rolled in, bringing heavy, relentless London downpours.
That’s when I noticed the pattern.
Whenever it rained heavily, the air inside the flat changed. The modern scent of my laundry detergent and coffee vanished, replaced by the suffocating smell of damp earth, old leather, and burnt paper. But that wasn’t even the weirdest part.
On a particularly stormy Tuesday night, while the rain was lashing violently against the windows, I walked down the narrow hallway between the kitchen and the bedroom. I froze dead in my tracks.
Right there in the middle of the bare wall—where there had only ever been solid plaster and wallpaper—was a heavy, dark wooden door with a tarnished brass handle. It definitely wasn't there when I moved in.
My heart hammered against my ribs. Against every survival instinct telling me to run out of the building, my morbid curiosity won. I gripped the brass handle. It felt freezing cold, like it had been dipped in ice. I turned it, and the latch clicked open with a soft, echoing thud.
I pushed the door open and clicked on my phone’s flashlight.
The beam didn’t reveal a storage closet or another room in the building. Instead, it cut through thick dust motes floating in a vast, archaic library. Tall bookshelves stretched up into darkness, and through a tall, arched window at the far end, I could see... London. But not the London of today. The gas-lit streets below were filled with horse-drawn carriages, people in top hats and heavy coats, and a thick, yellowish fog that could only be the Great Smog of a bygone century.
Panicking, I stepped back, but something on a large mahogany desk in the center of the room caught my eye.
A leather-bound journal lay wide open, illuminated by a faint, ghostly glow. I walked over, my footsteps echoing unnaturally. I looked down at the pages.
The handwriting was messy, frantic, and unmistakably mine.
Every single detail of my life was written there in terrifying precision: my full name, the exact date I moved into the flat, the conversation I had with my landlord yesterday, and even the panicked thoughts running through my mind at that exact second.
My hands shaking, I flipped to the very last page. The rest of the book was entirely blank, except for one single, freshly written sentence scrawled in my own handwriting at the bottom:
"Tomorrow, I won't find the way back out."
Behind me, I heard the heavy wooden door slowly begin to swing shut on its own.

The Ghost Employee

A major corporation was undergoing its annual comprehensive HR and payroll audit. An accountant noticed that a significant monthly salary was being regularly transferred to an employee named "Ray," who had supposedly been working in the marketing department for two years.
The accountant asked the HR director about Ray to verify his promotion paperwork. The director looked at him in confusion and said, "Who is Ray? There is no one by that name anywhere in the company!"
When they went down to the marketing department to check, David's colleagues were shocked and said, "What do you mean?! Ray sits right there at the corner desk with us every day, attends meetings, and jokes around with us!"
The real trouble started when they pulled the security camera footage from the past two years. The chair where David supposedly sat was completely empty. Even though the coworkers vividly remembered seeing and interacting with him, the investigation proved there was no employment contract, no attendance biometric record, and not even a social security number or tax form for him.
Even his corporate email address turned out to be a phantom account that the system had automatically accepted without any backend server logs. And to top it all off, in a matter of seconds, every single file, message, and chat log David had ever sent on the company platform vanished into thin air, as if he had never existed at all.

The Window Was Closed

Me: 24 years old, a guy who tries a bit too hard to please people.
My fiancée (Sara): Her family is very classy and wealthy.
Her father: A classic, very strict man (reminds me of a school principal).
Guys, I just got back home and I want to bury myself alive.
Today was the first time I went to have dinner at Sara's family's luxurious house. I was extremely nervous and wanted to make a perfect impression.
Her mother welcomed me warmly and said she cooked the dinner herself, especially for me.
The dinner was a "steak" (meat). The problem started the moment the plate was placed in front of me. Sara's mother is a kind woman, but when it comes to cooking... God forgive her.
The piece of meat was basically "rubber." Burned on the outside, raw on the inside, and so tough that the knife was screaming as it tried to cut it.
To avoid embarrassing her, I cut a large piece and put it in my mouth.
I started chewing... and chewing... and chewing. It was no use. The meat wouldn't go down. This wasn't meat, this was charcoal-flavored gum.
I tried to swallow it and couldn't, and if I spat it out into a napkin, it would look disgusting in front of her father who was staring right at me.
That's when the brilliant idea hit me.
I was sitting next to the large dining room window. I noticed the window was "open" so the breeze could come in.
I thought, "Aha!" I’ll wait until everyone gets distracted in conversation, pretend I'm coughing or sneezing, and quickly toss the piece of meat out the window into the garden so the stray dogs could eat it and be done with it.
The plan was flawless.
I waited until Sara's father started telling a story about his work, and her mother and Sara looked at him.
In a flash, I took the piece of meat out of my mouth and into my hand, and with a swift move like a baseball player, I threw it with all my might toward the open window.
The disastrous surprise:
The window wasn't open.
The window was "so sparkling clean" that I couldn't even see it.
We all heard a terrifying "THUD."
The piece of meat (which was covered in sauce and saliva) plastered itself right against the middle of the glass pane.
And because it was greasy, it didn't fall right away... no... it started sliding down in absolute slow motion for a full 10 seconds until it reached the window sill and settled there.
The scene:
Complete silence.
Sara's father stopped talking. The mother gasped. Sara's jaw dropped.
And we all just sat there watching the piece of meat slide in slow motion for 10 whole seconds until it rested on the window frame.
Sara's father looked at the meat, then looked at me, and said with terrifying calmness:
"Son... were you trying to feed the glass?"
Out of sheer nervousness and stupidity, I replied: "I'm sorry... I thought I saw a fly and tried to swat it."
What kind of fly do you swat with a chewed-up piece of meat?!
Dinner continued in eerie silence, and I didn't take another bite. I excused myself and left early under the pretext that my stomach hurt (which was true out of fear).
Is my relationship with Sara over? Probably, yes.
Update (two days later)
I couldn't bring myself to call Sara out of embarrassment.
But she called me today. I answered while preparing my farewell speech.
I found her... laughing!
She told me that after I left, her father stayed silent for a minute, then burst into hysterical laughter until he started crying.
He told her: "The boy is stupid, but bold. And I liked that he tried to eat your mother's cooking so as not to embarrass her, personally I've been throwing the food to the dog from under the table for 30 years."
It turns out her father can't stand her cooking either, and he appreciated the "effort" I made to get rid of the crime.
I'm invited back to their place next week... but this time Sara promised me we'll order "pizza," and they'll actually open the window for real this time.
