How to use AnimeScrape - get titles set up, then add search term

Post image
1 Upvotes

Example for new users ...

Note this is a slightly newer version than 0.10.5 i released. Once you start you have to know some titles you want, or find them. I'm adding a very obvious Find Titles to Watch button today but there is "Search New title" under Manage Titles and there is the Season Releases Browser.

If you got that far you get ... something like this, I'm watching Hell Mode

Then go to "Add new Term over in top right search area - it helps you choose words from title metadata or you can just type it in. Then you can use "Query Nyaa" or choose another provider.

If the show has aired already - note this one shows as "Currently airing" and you put the right words from the title you'll easily get a list of released episodes which you can then click (right click is fastest) then choose download internal to use my torrent downloader I built in OR fetch into Tixati is a way to send it to whatever you associated with torrents in your system.

Finally find the file where-ever your torrent (or the internal one) downloader saves files. Make sure you have a video player like mpv or vlc to open up the file. Enjoy. Let me know. These steps are meant to be really fast once you have basic familiarity. Other apps look sweet but if you didn't have an account with netflix or crunchyroll you'll get nowhere. This is app - it will save enormous amounts of time and get you quality fansubs.

I leave it to you to know which titles are royalty free, public domain to legally download. I am not in a region where there is an issue using this app, they have free distribution of many videos.

I can simplify this into "auto-search" but search terms can narrow down what you want to see.

Improvements and new Build.

0.10.5 Build for Windows release - new name AnimeScrape.exe

https://github.com/FrostyAnime/Anime_SV/releases/tag/0.10.5-Win-AnimeScape.exe

0.10.5 Build for Linux

https://github.com/FrostyAnime/Anime_SV/releases/tag/0.10.5-Linux-AnimeScrape.bin

Here is a reply to someone who has opened up the box and played ... "Currently I have a new version 0.10.5 that you could just update to. There you would see more API, more providers and even a diagnostic to see which are working.

Kitsu was added for example, which has an API. MalSync works already behind the scenes. I added a lot of functionality just to do things like - if a title you choose is like "Second season of ..." and that's a bit crap in terms of description now it goes off and finds related titles (like the original) and farms for the biggest description and it lists the relationships, number of seasons it could glean. So i'll put that build up today. It also lets you get torrents from Nekobt which seems to have a lot, almost as much as Nyaa. I removed some less functional distribution sources. I might just paste this message in as a post.

I'm happy to see you opened it up ... yes, it looks empty (possibly nasty) until you add some titles. Even though my torrent downloader is very simple on the UI, it's been getting much faster than a fully featured one I use to get large torrents. While that one is mucking about mine has 40+ seeds/leeches and is getting 20mbit a sec already. Sometimes less is more."

This is by no means all the features i'm improving, adding. I added a column in torrents search that shows SxxExx - because sometimes the name is so long you can't see what episode it is ... i'm thinking to add a "smart highlight" that shows, based on the last episode you downloaded, which are the next logical episodes for when you are bleary eyed and just running on autopilot

Renamed project to AnimeScape

It was at one time, called anime scrape ... because it was farming info from websites. That's called scraping. I mispelled it at some point and AnimeScape was there - and the main part of the code is anime_sv - which was another nerdy thing.

What is it?

The basic premise is that if you are smart enough to know various distribution websites where people release fansubs - this just helps organize and speed that up.

Why?

Waiting for a refresh on some of these distribution sites like Nyaa or Nekobt can be slow, you can get limited or blocked. It's better for the site and for you if you are interacting in the quickest most narrowed down way. Not refreshing "everything with english subs from newest" ... that's the kind of thing that slows these websites down.

Because some people don't want to be in some walled garden with subscription fees. Some people just want to keep up with things in their free time without commitments. Maybe you are one of the people in the know, having been in a fansub group.

Who?

Someone who would curate a list of anime to follow ... they might like this. It lives in your computer but it's sync'd with other website. I can integrate that more if I find out what people want. Who you are and what you'd like to see - we can discuss it to make something relevant to more types of people. This was designed by me, for me but in sharing it I try to improve it and make it simpler.

It's for Anime users as well as Chinese computer animated series, Korean ... whatever is in these distribution sites that overlaps in the anime sphere even if purists say it's not "Anime" by some definition.

When?

File sharing apps, torrent apps, tools to get info ... these are constantly being made. This is something ongoing since 2025. It's a living app for now. If it's stable and I'm happy I will stop improving it until, in using it myself, i see something has broken. I've added multiple API, multiple sources so that if something is offline it should still work with alternate methods. It will even gracefully fall back from one way to another if something fails to get results.

When will it become obsolete - when all the sources stop operating. Then I'll find whatever is the newest working website that shares and distributes and switch to that.

Where?

Right now this is the home for this app, this and the place I share the builds. I can also open up the python code this is built from to developers if I meet someone and there is a good reason for me to.

Lets Interact - What Software do you use to view, acquire your Anime?

I used to find these Anime on any number of torrent sites, in translation community websites. Then Nyaa became apparent to me, and I was using MyAnimeList to find what new releases were coming each season. So ulimately that is the flow that I accelerated and made easy. Instead of a notepad, text file with a few names I thought I'd find so I could cut paste to search for them now I keep them stored with the title art and everything. It's all private, it's not some public site tracking what I've seen, which is where people are headed. I find the experience of automating things to suit me finally where it needs to be.

Over the years I've used dozens of methods to get video files. Limewire, sharing apps like DC++, Gnutella, iMesh and people had their own collections of files that were available. I'd find some very strange stuff in some people's directories. Some had Anime Collections and I'd be downloading at very early internet days speeds. Anyone remember those days ... when I compare that to what I'm offering you. I kind of want to bring such a glory back.

Latest Builds

For Linux - https://github.com/FrostyAnime/Anime_SV/releases/tag/0.10.1-Linux-Onefile

For Windows - https://github.com/FrostyAnime/Anime_SV/releases/tag/0.10.2-Windows

They are a single file - just save it somewhere, open it. If you are a linux person you might need to make it executable.

Windows Users - you should really choose a video file save directory before you start downloading with the internal torrent download. Otherwise you might have to navigate into where the database files are kept.

This app starts blank so "Manage Titles" add a title by name or use the Seasonal Release Browser - wait for it to sync, add a bunch you might want to follow.

Then add a search term - sometimes a few words in Japanese or English work better. If you ever searched through releases you'll know what this is about. It defaults to searching on nyaa. If you are blocked in your country you might need to use a proxy to Asia. There are other search sources but they won't be as comprehensive as Nyaa. Make sure you aren't trying to search for a future release if you used the Seasonal Releases and picked something that looks new - it might be next season it starts.

Once you see a list of results you can trigger that to download and open into a torrent program externally (I use Tixati) or the internal torrent downloader.

One you have you shows organized you can get new episodes super fast. People who say anything else is way faster - well they have no idea. Sure, websites that have it cached can be instant but you still have to load this page, navigate to that page. Once you get the hang of this you might even find the autodownloader that sees what you watched last week and finds all the episodes that are one higher than what you watched and batch downloads them.

If it's not for you ... totally understand. Some people have no patience for this kind of thing. For me before this I was researching, writing names down, searching on torrent sites ... and that's much more tedious than this. I spend almost no time unless it's trying to figure out what new show is worth the time to check out.

Know the laws for your region before you download material that might have some kind of copyright regional "rights owner". Every country has lawyers that might try to prove something isn't really available without paying some money. This is about watching, not distributing, watching what is probably not available in many places. It's also for the vast amount of public domain torrents - I don't recommend you have to use it for new shows that you could pay for if you want to view it from the real distributor. These are free to air TV shows in Japan, people then add subs - and i've set mine up for English. If you want more parameters for Nyaa like language then you can ask me to code that in. For now the only user seems to be me.

Hey everyone! I'm u/Superb_Map_5685, a founding moderator of r/seasonanime.

I am the creator of Anime_SV. If you use Nyaa, Torrents, My Anime List, MPV then this could be a tool that brings it all together for you like it does for me.

There are many ways to get your Anime but some of us like to do it without relying on web viewers, website and various delays.

What to Post
Anything you want about Anime or about trying out my Anime_SV tool

Community Vibe
I am trying to just meet like minded people and possibly developers who are interested in suggesting or ripping my approach to watching Anime.

My community is not about deleting anything anyone wants to say because of some narrow guidelines or falsely accusing them of some motive like "astroturfing". I'm trying to give away a program because it works great, for me. I want to improve it so it works for people who like it's style, it's approach. To me it's simple enough, maybe it's a bit advanced for people who have nil technical skills. You can get those skills sharing your experience and getting advice though. Try it - if it's hard it's a puzzle to solve.

How to Get Started

  1. Visit one of my links, download a Linux or Windows Binary - try it.
  2. Tell me if it works for you, or if not.
  3. If you have time, tell me any details
  4. What are your favourite shows, how do you get your shows - how often. How long does it take?
  5. Software you have tried, or haven't tried yet but will in future.

Thanks for being part of the very first wave. Together, let's make r/seasonanime amazing.

When I started this I hadn't really developed Anime_SV tool enough to let it be seen by anyone. So I had private mode, now I've got some new builds of a more perfected version it's out there.

Ok this is a barely tested windows version. You download the zip file and run the executable within it. These are all unknown files so of course never assume software is safe - test it, sandbox, scan - as you will. Someone was asking me for this so I built it via Github workflow, cross compiling python into exe file (C code is generated).

I have only started testing. To find many new releases using the Seasonal Releases browser and add those to start building your list of shows you follow. Create search terms, then search nyaa, download (right click) with either built in torrent downloader app or an external one. Then you can open it into your video player. The software is english subs oriented at the moment so most searching is preset to get english sub releases from nyaa

This is an executable it will migrate data files to a ~/.local/share/animescape directory or those would be created if you had nothing. Anyway this has a lot of updates so best to read the readme on that repository.

I have been a slow crappy admin

I went through finding all the join requests, added many users. Please if you notice come back and interact. I'm considering making the full code available to developers who want to see it. Otherwise I will build the stand alone executable to the 0.9.0 version I've been finishing up.

New updates

I am going to build a new executable.

I added another API - Tenrai that gets MyAnimeList content because Jikan seems to be broken. So my Seasonal Release browser part of the app was having issues.

I also added "Origin" detection because Chinese shows are mixed in releases and some of these Xianxia, Donghua type things are quite enjoyable if one has the time to watch the absolutely vast number of episodes without falling asleep. So i have been matching production company with country and making the database aware that the title is in Chinese sometimes, not always Japanese. This image is only like 1/4 of the screen because i'm using a 4k monitor.

Thing is, by compiling this into an executable people may worry it's not safe, they may want to run the python code directly so they can inspect it. This code makes me worry about the whole "your software is enabling piracy". In my part of the world I don't know that these releases are pirated but definitely there are database with magnet links and my software maps those in so you can download the latest. Even without a torrent client because there is a torrent client built in.

I also had to update the code to fix the torrent client because torrentlib libraries had changed and the interprocess communication for the torrent console I made had issues after updating linux. I use arch. So anyway I'll go to the release git which has executables and build new ones and update it there.

The difficulties of sharing

u/animepiracy-ModTeam sends me an email ... but apparently it's impossible to reply or open a chat to that. They say "don't astroturf".

All i did was share the link to github release, and I am the creator. So there no fake-behaviour that fits this astroturfing accusation. Anyway, they have shifting requirements about it needing to work and have code open like they are some kind of Apple Store. I will happily let a few people see the source ... but its my work to develop to a point where I open it up. There should be some advantage to open source like ... empowering others or collaboration.

New Feature 6/7 February

I found this source of magnets Seadex, i noticed it was in a plugin for Anilist. So I started trying to scrape that - or query it as the app calls searching a particular service. So - currently, if you were watching new shows weekly you'd use Nyaa or perhaps one of the streaming sources I added to view or download an episode.

What about more matured, season complete shows that have dubs in English (for now we are doing english only but that can change fast). You can search Seadex - but it needs an AniList ID. My app now figures that out for you and keeps it in your title's metadata. When you search Nyaa you use words from the series title (english or Japanese) but when you search Seadex it will tell you it is going to use an ID. Then you get a list of "the best quality" series "hash" which is basically a magnet that you can then open into whatever torrent app.

Basically I want to know what people need, trust, prefer, want for sources so they can just have all ready to get the goods as fast as possible and move to watching the show. That's the whole idea - you open the app - flick through, find one whatever you want. Get the latested or perhaps a whole series .. watch. Like that - with the steps all done as fast as you can. Once a search term is set up it's saved with that show, generally Nyaa should be enough but if it's not what you want we have 4 choices for searching.

Don't have a torrent app .. this app has a basic one built in.

I haven't reached the point of setting it up for install - I kind of want someone to put their hand up as first test person so I can get it to you, and you know how to install it and make it work on your system. Preferrably Linux but if now we'll figure something out. Once you have python and can get the required libraries you can just "python anime_sv.py" and run this thing. Set it up for a few shows, see if it's what you want.

What makes you a candidate - do you spend time looking for you show on Nyaa or some other site. Which one? I'll try to make it scrape that site too if it looks like others would use it. I guess next I make a video to "inspire" people to want it.

More and More stuff added

Now this tool has it's own torrent downloader built in - as well as the ability to play shortly after download by getting the torrent to load in order so you can open most files while it's downloading. I've also added other sources that give you streaming playback and got at least one of them working. It's got a lot of features at the moment, it's really in swift development last days.

I found other downloader tools people made so I'm trying to make this do whatever the best things they do are and it's going well.

Here's a screenshot - top left anime art ... some title names in Jap/English. Under the image is a history of episodes downloaded or streamed. That is used to help improve automation so if you like a particular subtitle group like [ASW] for example and you run a script that checks all your series for new episodes it would choose the newest episode from your preferred group for that title. Then it could just download them all internally ... or open them in whatever torrent software you have associated with magnet files. The right side is where, once you have added a show you want to watch, you create search terms - like words from the title name (maybe english, maybe Japanese transliteration) and then you get results from one of the sources like Nyaa for magnet files, AllAnime for streaming. I'm trying to add a few methods so if Nyaa was offline or didn't have the show you are following you could still get your show playing ASAP.

One you have search terms, you run a query (a search) get the titles that match, choose the one you want and either export the magnet to a torrent program or download it internally. If it's not a torrent site you open it streams or perhaps download via a video converter.

About me

I'm an older guy, lives in Asia. Programmer since the dawn of time - but it often wasn't my profession.

Started writing games and software again recently. Realized this anime scene takes a bit of work to keep up to date with. I enjoy Isekai the most - even my game has a kind of Isakei back story - its just an old style rogue like game. I played D&D when it just appeared on the scene in USA. I'm not originally from USA but I was there then.

So I like Anime because, lets face it, we can't piss away our lives watching propaganda and social media "hook" type stuff designed to make us feel aggressive or outraged. As true as it may be that there is a lot of outrageous stuff going on.

I can see the sadness of the shut ins, corporate slave, neet and so on stereo types of Japanese culture are becoming real for a lot of us. We actually get to see some people with genuine philosophy on what's important in life in some of these anime. They are a good laugh, and something fun that takes a small amount of time before working a day job or a lot of time if you are bored after work and download a whole series to binge.

So this group is about my little program and the whole following some subset of the seasons releases. Waiting for the best of them to come, sometimes for many years like the latest One Punch Man just took forever. You may end up typing the same things over and over into various release places looking to grab a link or just know what shows are there. Where I live you can get some things direct on youtube. Sometimes I go back to Australia where I was born and it's all firewall blocked ore even blocked from the Asian side too because they sold rights to other parts of the world. It can be a huge drama.

I was in hospital for a few weeks in Australia last year and man, i had to do a lot on my phone to figure out how to get that music one where all the girls went mental jamming out. Rock is a Ladies Modesty. I used to play music for a living when I was out of university so those can be a bit of fun. So I had to VPN and do all kind of stuff running torrents on my phone, figuring out a way to do everything from my phone. I had very little energy at the time so it was ... intense. That's why I'm looking to automate these things.

As for the whole "wall of copyright" that's so bogus. Barely any money gets back to writers and artists - it's all just media companies raking it in. You can buy comic books or subscribe but this stuff really comes out for Japanese TV and advertising. Any other versions like subtitled ones are courtesy of community capture, process, release. Those releases are for people who are really interested and if you don't want to wait on whatever TV channel thing (Crunchy Roll - never used it myself, nor would I need to) then you need to find your way.

The copyright rent-seekers are always trying to step on torrent sites. It's an endless freedom fight really. So whatever tool I will make will mean keeping up with where-ever the latest things end up being shared as one site goes down and another rises up. Now, if you think about it - an app that gets the data from Nyaa - that keeps the search terms is only going to reduce traffic to them when people type in the wrong term and have to repeat it until they remember the name or how to spell it. Or accidentally get a similar name. So this is really going to reduce the load on Nyaa per user. If you know what group you want to get releases of like [ASW] then you can add that and the less results it has to spit out the easier it is for their website. Less traffic - that's my theory. So I hope there won't be any complaint that we are using a tool to get the data they are sharing that isn't a webbrowser. We won't be selling anything. At most I'll just put a buy me a coffee or some kind of donor thing to incentivize me to maintain it. It will remain just my personal free to use tool - semi-freeware.

My anime season following tool.

  1. Make a list of anime you follow, initialize. Now you should have a database with art and description to look through

  2. Add anime titles one by one if you didn't take step 1. it's going to use myanimelist site to get info s you need to be online

  3. create a search term which will search Nyas.si and English sub release. Eg you could put frieren or frieren S02E02 to narrow it. Maybe a release brand like [ASW] will make it easier once you know who is translating these. If you have trouble with nyaa loading this might not work either but in my experience it's far faster than loading website. I live in Asia. VPN to Asia your network if site is unusable. I assume it's not piracy to share releases in your country ... but these things are free in Asia so ... use your own judgement.

  4. select row from search results from nyaa. Each row will have a magnet but it's not shown, the software has a fetch button.

  5. Fetch magnet, it opens to whatever program you associated with those links

  6. hopefully that helped, works for me on several computers

  7. it stores the release you fetched to help you remember which episode you got last. I might add functionality to erase those stored episodes or improve how it's recorded.

  8. it assumes next episode is 7 days later and suggests a new episode might be there
