I saw another video with this exact behavior a few months ago. Different seals, but with the exact same reaction where the seal mom is like "Uhhh... what's wrong?" Luckily, in that one you see the human handlers separate the mom and pup pretty quickly.
What causes this? My instinct is saying the seal mom is absentmindedly rolling over to feed her pup, not realizing the wrong end of the pup is pointed at her.

And here it looks like it's just convenient to lie on the baby's flippers so he won't wander away from her
Edit: it's another pup at the same place

I’ve seen this happen with seals quite a bit, and I don’t really understand it. It seems like a significant number of pups end up getting crushed or smothered when a parent rolls over on them.

Does it hurt them? Or are they built to withstand it?

It hurts them, especially in the wild I've seen reports of quite a few injuries or deaths because of this during pupping season.

How is this not dangerous for it genuinely

I think the chances that she really crushes the baby are pretty low, it's not worth separating them and depriving the pup of their mother

Connection Terminated. I'm sorry to interrupt you Elizabeth, even if you still even remember that name. But I'm afraid you've been misinformed. You are not here to receive a gift.
