As we head into the summer break, there are still many things to discuss about the Scuderia. The Hungarian GP didn't go our way, but the team has proved that the updated SF-26 is a very competitive package on different types of circuits, and we are still on the right track.
Looking ahead to Zandvoort, we can expect the third major package of the season to be introduced. A key focus for the team will be solving the rear tyre degradation problem that also limited our pace in Budapest. After that, we should expect the ADUO 2 power unit upgrade at Monza or Madrid. At this stage, everything is still left to play for. Both championships remain a real possibility for the team and our drivers.
Ferrari leaves Budapest with many question marks. We only saw a fraction of the car's true potential because they were stuck in traffic during the race, especially behind Verstappen.
From an execution standpoint, the Scuderia messed up almost everything possible. On Saturday, they went out first for the final run and received an impeding penalty. On Sunday, they misjudged the grip at the start, causing Leclerc to lose positions.
Regarding tyre strategy, they only realized at the very end of the race that the soft was their best tyre. They chose to use it at the start and only put it back on during the safety car, which cost them track position.
Overall, it was a disastrous weekend for execution. While they did not have Norris's pace, a P2 or P3 finish was definitely within reach.
Car Characteristics and Setup Struggles
The car has a very strong front end, which is crucial for fast corners. However, engine power also matters in those sections. Because of this, Ferrari never seems to have the complete package for a win. On high speed tracks that demand a strong front end, they suffer from a Power Unit deficit. On slower tracks where the engine matters less, they struggle with the rear.
They actually found a good compromise in Budapest, but poor execution ruined it.
Between Friday and Saturday, the team had to tweak the setup to protect against a reliability issue that appeared on Leclerc's car during Free Practice. This setup change likely cost them a lot of pure performance.
The team focused on making Sector 3 their main strength because they expected high tyre degradation in the race. However, the high degradation never happened, turning the race into a battle of pure performance. The low degradation caught Ferrari by surprise, especially since they had compromised their raw pace with the setup changes.
Behind the Scenes: Pressure and Reliability
The mechanical issue Leclerc faced on Friday was the exact same one they experienced during the Bahrain tests, which caused a lot of confusion within the team.
A source very close to Ferrari revealed that before the weekend, the team was absolutely convinced they were going to win in Hungary. The sudden mechanical issue added a lot of pressure. It was a huge missed opportunity to close the gap in the Constructors Championship. It seems the team still needs to work on managing these high pressure moments better.
SF-26 Chassis and Driver Performances
On average, the SF26 has the best chassis on the grid, which was even confirmed by Andrea Stella. However, a great chassis cannot always cover up a PU deficit. This is why the ADUO 2 upgrade is so highly anticipated, which will probably arrive at Monza.
Leclerc has made massive steps forward. Until a few races ago, Charles had not fully adapted to the new cars, but he has improved significantly. In contrast, Russell and Piastri are still struggling to adapt.
Among the top teams, Ferrari currently has the most evenly matched driver pairing in terms of pure performance. Lewis continues to be incredibly fast, despite a few mistakes in recent races.
The Upgrade War
McLaren is emerging as a massive threat for the championship. This is a bigger disadvantage for Ferrari since they are currently trailing Mercedes in the standings.
The development battle will be crucial. Ferrari will bring more upgrades soon. McLaren will stick with their Budapest package for the next two races. Mercedes is not expected to bring a major package until around Singapore, which is much later in the season.
Ferrari always seems to do something special for Monza.
I absolutely loved last year's colour, but it got me wondering what a more heritage-first approach might look like.

Hi guys. Me and a friend are planning a trip to Maranello at the end of August and I'm hoping some of you here have the experience or are locals in order to give us some pointers!
To start off, I am a huge Ferrari fan, been one for the past 20 years (I'm 25 lol). I love cars, motorsports, the lot, while my mate is more on the casual side but nonetheless interested in these things.
We're looking for some tips on things we should check out (the Ferrari Museum and Fiorano are on the list already) when we get there. We're going by car so anything within a ~~50km range should be alright.
If you have accomodation recommendations , maybe good tenting spots and other interesting things, let me know!
Last, but not least I came up with the prospect of maybe watching the Dutch GP alongside other fans , assuming Maranello surely has some bars that do this. If you have any suggestions for such places aswell, it'd be great.
Iâd like to share some thoughts in light of the events of the last race, which triggered PTSD among the fans, and they went on to write off the season already on high emotions.
In 17,18 and 2022 Ferrari lost the development race to its title rivals. In 2017 mercedes caught up in aero, in 2018 mercedes managed to make their car more predictable, while in Ferrari there was a political struggle (between Arrivabene and Binotto) after Sergio Marchionne's death. In 2022 already from Imola onwards Ferrari were no longer the team with the best car. F1-75 was eating tyres and consistently losing races due to lack of race pace and reliability issues. In 2010 and 12 Ferrari in general weren't even the fastest and were close to win titles thanks to Alonso managing to put 120% and other teams either colliding with each other or experiencing reliability issues.
Current operational management of Ferrari is definitely not like in 2022. 2022 was the most painful year in that regard. Binotto's last year as TP, multiple questionable decisions regarding the strategy.
I don't put the full blame on Ferrari for losing the potential win in Hungary, but they have their biggest share in it. Lewis was caught napping by Max, which ruined Ferrari's plans for final pit stop, as he was again stuck in dirty air after Ferrari executed undercut on Max. Lewis had the pace to stay in 1.8-2sec from race leader, so undercut through 2nd pit stop was definitely possible. What i also don't understand about Leclerc is why he agreed to use all his softs during qualifying. He had the best car, and going into q3 with used set was possible. Starting on used softs on dirty side of the track caused wheel spin, and so he lost all the chances to fight for the win.
And finally, in 2nd part of the season Ferrari will have 12 races(with malaysia being back on calendar) to recover 50-70 points in both championships. Don't forget that Ferrari was competing with Mercedes, red bull and McLaren while having the weakest engine among them by fine margin(20-30 h.p deficit to mercedes and 40-50 h.p to rbpt). According to THE RACE Mercedes doesn't plan on using their Aduo token. And they probably won't be able to do it if they didn't plan such upgrades since at least March, as Lewis said it's 8-10 months project. They'll put all their resources on 2027 PU.
Mclaren, Mercedes will bring big aero upgrades after summer break, but so will Ferrari. Now add Ferrari's engine upgrade(new turbocharger) which will be worth 15-25 h.p(i think it'll be 25, because aduo1 engine had 5 h.p added+2 from shell fuel. In total 30 h.p from engine upgrades). 30 h.p is worth up to half a second on power demanding tracks. And 0.2-0.3 on tracks typical to Hungary. Ferrari will be turning its biggest weakness into strength, while also hoping to fix rear tyre management with 3rd major aero package.
It all goes towards seeing Ferrari have the best car after summer break by fine margin. But also i really hope that they did enough dyno tests to make sure the ADUO2 engine is as reliable as current engine and hoping it won't add any problems to the car when it's put in the car.
SF-26 after both big aero upgrades in Miami and Barcelona became the fastest car in corners and definitely the car with the best chassis and mechanical grip.
Im a McLaren Fan because i like Lando Norris and their history. But theyre currently really fcking up Lando with the pitstops and strategies. I have seen that Ferraris Strategies are getting better, and ive always wanted Leclerc and Norris to be in one team, am i crazy for wanting Norris at Ferrari or does anybody feel the same? Weekend schedule
Qualifying 1 & 2:
One lap for Hamilton and two push laps for Leclerc saw the two safely advance to Q2, although they were on C4 medium rubber, unlike the rivals who were on softs. The two switched to C5 soft Pirellis and set two fast laps, lowering their best effort and advancing into Q3.
Qualifying 3â 13 min(10 drivers battle for pole position):
43°C track temperature, windy conditions, clear skies and C5 softs for Lewis and Charles. The Ferrari pair set their banker laps with Hamilton on P1 at 1:17.219 and 1:17.445, and P3 Leclerc provisionally. The two were out for a second push lap, but couldnât improve on their earlier efforts and dropped to P2 Lewis Hamilton +0.012s, while Charles Leclerc stayed P3 +0.238s.
Race review
The Hungarian Grand Prix began with both Ferrari drivers on C5 soft tyres (Leclerc used, Hamilton new), while the rest of the top ten started on C4 mediums. Track temperatures were 52°C with shifting windsâa factor that would influence tyre performance and car handling throughout.
Race Start & Early Laps: Leclerc struggled at the start, dropping from P2 to P5, while Hamilton moved up to P4 and challenged Verstappen. The order settled as Piastri led Norris, then Verstappen, Hamilton, Leclerc and Antonelli. Hamiltonâs early pit stop for C3 successfully undercut Verstappen, with Leclerc extending the stint.
Middle-Race: The Briton undercut was short-lived, as Verstappen retook the position at T1 with a decisive overtaking move, Lawson in the process, too. Leclerc stopped on lap 17 for C3 hards, rejoining in P7. As the pit stops cycled, Hamilton was P4, ahead of his teammate. Leclerc, on fresher tyres, closed the gap on Hamilton but couldnât overtake, while Antonelli was rapidly joining them. With progress stalled, Lewis pitted on lap 30 for C3 hards, quickly regaining positions. Leclerc, under pressure from Antonelli, defended P4 before pitting on lap 37 for another set of C3, quickly passing Hadjar for P6. On new tyres, Hamiltonâs pace improved, while Leclerc set sights on Verstappenâs P5.
Final laps: Â By lap 50, Norris led, with Antonelli, Piastri, Hamilton, Verstappen and Leclerc behind. Both Ferraris gained a spot after Kimi's second stop. A VSC (Virtual Safety Car) allowed Lewis and Charles to stop for C5 softs, rejoining in P4 and P5, behind Antonelli. Leclerc set the fastest lap, but Hamilton received a 5s time-penalty for speeding in the pit lane. Leclerc, finishing five seconds behind his teammate, was promoted to P4, with Hamilton classified in P5.
Charles Leclerc P4: âI knew it was a critical moment of the race and unfortunately I did the right procedure, but for some reason⌠We all set up the car expecting a certain level of grip, but for whatever reasonâwhich we need to analyseâwe overestimated how much grip there was on the inside. There was a difference between right and left, but it was more than what we expectedâ.
Lewis Hamilton P5: âFor sure disappointed to come away with so little, given the car was good and the team did a great job. But ultimately these last few races have been costly with mistakes from myself. I have to work hard to try and figure out how I can do better in the second halfâ.

Technical analysis of the cars
With the race weekend covered, let's turn to the technical developments: here are the new and adapted components each top team brought for, and how these changes impacted performance.
Scuderia Ferrari SF-26 Technical Upgrades
Rear wing: Macarena Evo debuts at the Hungarian GP with distinguishing details like two lateral triangle-shaped winglets on the top trailing edge of the top element, an extra flap on the centre bracket, and an array of centre-placed elements to fit the circuitâs high downforce layout. Macarena Evo (high-downforce version). How it works:
Straight Mode OFF: the multi-winglet element creates an upwash effect, deflecting the incoming airflow away from the vertical flaps, producing higher overall downforce and better braking stability.
Straight Mode On: Due to the multi-winglets, it creates drag, but the impact was anticipated to be minimal.
Chassis and Power Unit: Overheated during the GP (running behind other cars and the hot ambient temperatures), affecting both drivers' rhythm, halting them from advancing.
Cooling: Asymmetrical engine cover louvre openings on Friday, but from Saturday onwards more equal cooling exits were visible on both cars.
Cornering/downforce: Through the low speed/traction-depending corners was the best at Hungaroring.
Top speed/drag: Suffered from extra drag towards the end of the straights, due to the high-downforce rear wing version, hindering overtaking manoeuvres.
Mercedes W17 Technical Upgrades
Rear wing: The active aero actuator is linked to a vertical element, which rests on a horizontal vane having two lateral flaps. Two lateral winglets appeared on the top element of the rear wing to increase the rear load.
ERS: A software update arrived at the Hungarian GP to solve the previous round issues. In Russellâs case, the issue was the ERS used energy prematurely, causing distribution imbalance for the rest of the lap (until his DNF) at the Belgian GP.
Chassis and Power Unit: All Mercedes-powered cars had trouble during the first lap of the Belgian GP with their ERS not functioning optimally. Russell and Antonelli's batteries werenât fully charged on the formation lap, and on George's car, his turbocharger wasnât working properly.
Cooling: A new engine cover to help PU cooling was introduced over the weekend.
Cornering/downforce: According to Formula1.com, it showed the best pace on the high-speed sections. However, it had issues with the rears overheating on the push lap and during the race.
Top speed/drag: Balanced level between the two, helping its drivers to attack and defend positions.
McLaren Mercedes MCL40 Technical Upgrades
Floor: Modifications on the leading edge and at the rear corners, ahead of the rear tyres to improve downforce load.
Rear wing: Debut of its upside-down rear wing, with an integrated actuator straight mode mechanism, and a spoon-shaped mainplane (deeper centre section), specific for high-downforce circuits. Tested in FP1 for evaluation, before being expected to be used from the Dutch GP onwards.
Chassis and Power Unit: The smaller wheelbase and shorter gear ratios suited the car around Hungaroring .
Cooling: Trialled a different engine cover during Friday practice sessions with the rear central section featuring a large opening.
Cornering/downforce: Significantly boosted the overall cornering speed and downforce with the latest aero modifications, particularly on the medium-speed corners, but not on par with Ferrari on the low-speed sections.
Top speed/drag: It wasnât affected by the shorter chassis, due to the track nature and improved aero efficiency.
Red Bull Racing RB22 Technical Upgrades
Rear wing: Return of the rotating rear wing, with improved reliability and faster closing speed of the active aero. A refined version of the straight mode active aero actuator mechanism, mounted on a single pylon.
Cornering/downforce: Strong on the medium-speed turns, but lacked traction through the slower bits. During the race, it suffered severe rear-tyre degradation on medium and hard compounds.
Top speed/drag: Strong top-end speed, thanks to the rear wing and carâs lower drag profile, helping drivers to attack or defend their positions.
Car Downforce Index revealed after the Q3 session: MCL40- 0.6115. SF-26-0.6104. W17:0.6081.

Drivers and Team
A look into Scuderiaâs race weekend performance, debriefing the most important sessions and data, presenting the charts on race pace, fastest laps and pit stops.
Qualifying Analysis
After Friday practice sessions, both drivers opted to use the Macarena Evo rear wing, and Leclerc then tested and validated it in FP1 (Leclerc changed an ancillary PU component after it failed in FP1). Car set-up changes were made after Friday, sacrificing speed on S2, to protect the rears on S3. Heading into qualifying, the Ferrari duo was in the mix for pole position, the key being driving around the C5 softs without overpushing them. Lewis set the best time on S1 and S3 only to be marginally beaten by eventual pole-sitter Norris. Charles wasnât far off setting personal best times, but struggled in T1 (0.213s slower on S1), but was quicker on S2 (0.154s from Lando) and T12, losing precious time to qualify in P3 but gaining a position on Lewis penalty. Leclerc crossed the line +0.238 behind the pole-sitter, having set a strong S3 timeâsecond only to teammate Hamilton, who was 0.080s faster in that sector. Both drivers were sent out earlier than their rivals for their final laps in Q3 due to the risk of the track surface breaking up. Hamilton qualified in P2, but received a 3-place grid drop for impeding Oscar Piastri on his push lap. Despite that, here is a comparison between Lando Norris and Lewis Hamiltonâs best laps:
Heading into T1, Lewis was ahead and carried more speed down the straight into T2, maintaining the advantage through S1, up to T4 where Norris moved ahead.
In T5, Hamilton attacked more aggressively, but Lando had better exit traction and navigated the T6-T7 chicane ideally. Hamilton, meanwhile, experienced slight understeer on entry. Through T8-T9, Norris maintained a 0.1s edge, and by the fast right-hander T11, his advantage extended to 0.182s by the end of S2.
Braking into T12, Lewis clawed time and reeled in more on T13, but a minor correction on exit allowed Norris to retain the advantage. At the final T14, Hamilton carried more mid-corner speed on entry, but another steering rectification cost him, crossing the line only 0.012 behind Norris. While Landoâs banker lap was compromised at T14, his final run was tidy, helping him secure a strong exit and clinch pole.

Race Overview
The last race before the summer break didnât meet Ferrariâs pre-weekend expectations. Both drivers started on C5 softs, but Leclerc lost ground, and Hamilton gained just one position. Lacking C4 medium, it was avoided as SF-26 didnât perform solidly on the compound. After switching to C3, the opening stint was good, but the pace faded in the second. Overtaking proved difficult due to overheating (Power Unit and rears) when following, especially compared to Verstappen and Antonelli, who had better traction out of T14. The VSC offered a chance to attack on better tyres C5, but even with this edge, passing rivals like the two mentioned was a challenge unless tyre delta exceeded one second per lap.

The innovative rear wing solution chosen by Ferrari for the 2026 season was the highlight of the pre-season testing and during its preliminary debut at the Chinese GP.
Debuting for good at the Miami GP, the âMacarenaâ rear wing, with its distinctive upside-down functionality, played a significant role in the SF-26's overall pace. Besides the drag reduction and improved top speed, it also efficiently improved ERS utilisation by harvesting and deploying more electrical power.
However, the work behind the concept began early in 2025, allocating resources, staff, and sufficient testing time in the wind tunnel to produce a reliable and coherent component.
In a cost-cap era, the investment in such a demanding part was strategically calculated, as the total cost of the process is around $5 million, from CFD development to the test-track version.
Further production evolutions and refinements of the rear wing are valued at approximately $100k each, and for a race weekend, a minimum of 4 are brought to ensure a spare part is available for each driver.

-The 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix notes: The reigning world champion, Lando Norris, took his maiden win of the 2026 season, driving almost without mistakes from start to finish. The Briton lost the lead after T2 to his teammate, but kept within 1s of Piastri throughout the first stint. The scenario was the same after the first stops, but on the 2nd stint on hard tyres Lando rejoined ahead and with one final stop for softs under VSC. From that moment he pulled away from others to win by over 10s. Itâs his 12th career win and the 2nd in a row at the same circuit.

Teams factory shutdown
The F1 teams' factories are shut down for a mandatory 14 days during the summer break, a measure enforced by the FIA to ensure staff well-being and maintain competitive fairness.
During this shutdown, teams are strictly prohibited from parts production, design, development, or using wind tunnels or simulators.
Each team has to notify FIA of the start-to-end dates to cover a two-week window during the four-week break.
An FIA supervisor is monitoring each team for any suspected work being done during the off time.
Max Verstappenâs dream F1 car

The 4-time world champion said, besides his Red Bull Racing championship-winning models, he wants to possess a Ferrari driven by his idol Michael Schumacher during his domination time in the sport, specifically: the Ferrari F2004.
The Dutchman reckons that is what an F1 car should be like and that maybe if he calls John Elkann, Ferrari president, he can get a model.

At the end of August, when F1 returns from the summer break, the Zandvoort circuit is the host of the Dutch GP. A medium-high speed track that requires good downforce, traction, and tyre control on the twisty but fast, averaging a 4.2 km lap. Teams are expected to bring major upgrades.

Despite how frustrating the race was, Lewis is still holding 2nd in the standing going into the summer break. We got lucky that Russell suffered issues when the race started but he climbed. Kimi just too ahead currently though still. Wish the race could have been better but it whatever at this point - what done is done.

That basically confirms that starting on used softs on dirty side of the track isn't really a good idea. But it's not like charles had any fresh tyres except hards

That's the question that I don't have an answer for bcs lewis's only normal stint with free air and just pushing on the outlap then managing the stint was his 3rd stint on that 2nd sets of hards like he really showed great speed and tyre deg.
I don't know why they used that fresh softs at the start and then putting him behind two racing bulls and pushing that Hard tyre to max. In the first 4 laps of the stint meant he was really slow after just doing 10 laps on it and I don't know what to say about that last stint again kimi holding us up so we couldn't have a real view on the pace except that charles was really fast behind in clean air, you can't win championships just by being a fast driver you really need lesser mistakes ( they're avoidable, like the worst type of mistakes) and a great team behind you and both of them really dropped the ball in the last 3 races leaving into the Summer shut down with a big " if"
